Session Aims & Highlights (2019-10-28)

Main aims

1. Targets: Acquire images of a selection of new targets plus monitoring of previous variable stars, nearby stars and comets.
   (Rain and/or cloud was expected to interrupt or possibly end the session at some point)
2. AstroMain:  Test new code that suspends session if 'AllSkyStars' count falls below 20
3. Rain Safety: Check the response of the Observatory/Software to a string of showers passing over/nearby

Highlights

• Rain Safety . The Observatory/Software responded well to passing rain showers using cloud & rain sensors and rain threat data from DarkSky.net based on rain rader data. This was combined with monitoring using rain radar maps and data from the observatory.
• Continuous Improvement. A lot of continuous improvement ideas were generated during the session, some 22 in total

Lowlights

• Bug in 'Continue with New Plan' routine. A programming bug saw the AstroMain/AstroPlan programs go into a seemingly unending loop creating and loading 9 observing plans before being spotted and terminated.

Major Issues

• After finishing V1 Plan, AstroMain/AstroPlan went into an unending loop 'Continuing Session, Create & Load Observing Plan,   Suspending, Set Plan to Executed,  followed by a further request to make a new plan.  9 or 10 plans were created in this way before the problem was spotted.   This was all done whilst the session was in the Suspended State. Problem most-likely relates to code added a while ago for continuing session with a new plan without going through Initiating/Starting Equipmen/Equilbration etc.  The loop may well have finished if/when the skies eventually cleared or end of session had been reached, but database could have been filled up causing other problems.  Reviewing logs and code shows that the problem occurs because after being in the 'Continuing State (where New Plan is loaded) and after reentering the Suspended State, and Obs.Manager immediately re-tests for a Completed Job Run and because CompletedFrameJobs flag is still True, it spawns another a cycle of going to Continuing State and reloading a further new plan. Fixed by lowering the CompletedFrameJobs flag after it has done its job.

Minor Issues

• Focus Field taken at start of session whilst the session was suspended and the shutter still closed.
  (This was a problem that occurred during an attempted session on 2019-10-27).

• Programs on Observatory Program couldn't be activated (i.e. brough to focus/top) using TaskBar.
  VNC connection was being used at the time .  It was suspected that this was a Windows System glitch that can be fixed by restarting the Obsrevatory Computer

• Rain Shower came very fast with little or no prior cloud or rain threat warning. Investigate this in case it counts as an incident /near miss.  Rain first detected at 20:28:06.  Rain Alert came at 20:28:10 and shutter immediately commanded to close (even before moving to Suspended State). Shutter finished closing at 20:28:59.   Software responded ok once rain was detected.  Examine if there was danger to equipment.   Check if Hard Wired Relay is operative.

  Video shows this was a small fast moving & relatively thin cloud (but nevertheless rain producing)
   
• AllSky Camera is showing an artifact / object on the northern horizon view.   Examine AllSky Camera video in morning showed that this was an artificat produced by a large rain drop left from one of the passing showers

• Composite Plan not plotting both V1 and V10 plan (this was after deleting the V2 to V9 plans which had been created by a bug in AstroMain).  It was  supposed that there is an array limit issue and there may indeed have been a temporary problem on this front however the problem resolved itself and composite chart was successfully drawn.

• After rechecking the 'Suspend When Stars < 20' option the Obs.Manager/Job Executor failed to perform a soft-suspend. After working 'ok' , and with V10 run suspended due to too few stars the Suspend When Stars <20 option was unchecked, which trigger the session to begin running.  Checking Report Messages and Log Files show that the SoftSuspend was called ok aand seen by Job Executor at 00:46 (but its effect was masked at the the time by a bug in ExecuteQueue routine that saw the next target proceed when it shouldn't have)

  Note: SessionEvents are missing from the Database for this period ? (this probably corresponded to the time when the SessionEvents table was being edited to workaround the posting of unwanted events left over from Bug that saw the creation and loading of 9 plans in quick succession.
   
• SoftSuspend came just before starting Target 5/27  (C/2018 N2 (ASASSN) ) but the target wasn't held but proceeded to execute (slew,attempted centering and ShCap imaging) whilst the session proceeded to Suspend and Close the Shutter. Queue didn't correctly suspend under the next target (6/27) was reached.

• SessionEvents are missing from the Database for this period around 00:45 to 01:00.  Recalling the session operation it seems that this corresponded to the time when the SessionEvents table was being manually edited in AstroPlan to workaround the problem that unwanted events were being plotted on the Observing Results chart (these were events produced when a Obs.Manager bug saw the creation and loading of 9 plans in quick succession.

Continuous Improvement

• Record the unexpectedly behaviour when clarity values didn't immediately rise following a shower but remained low for 20 minutes after.  Following a short rain shower at 18:20-18:30 there was a x min delay in cloud sensor clarity readings returning to normal clear sky values.  In contrast the AllSky Stars count rose immediately the clouds passed. It is assumed that rain drops on the cloud sensor kept the clarity values low until they had the rain drained or evaporated away.
