Session Aims & Highlights (2019-11-07)

Main aims

1. Smarter Suspension:  Test bug fixes to new code that suspends session if 'AllSkyStars' count falls below 20
2. Targets: Acquire images of a selection of new targets plus monitoring of previous variable stars, nearby stars and comets.
   (Rain and/or cloud was expected to interrupt or possibly end the session at some point)

Highlights

• Smarter Suspension. New version of AstroMain worked really well and the Observatory/Software responded well to changing cloud conditions, taking advantage of clearer intervals and suspending operatures (including closing the shutter) when the conditions were not worth observing (images would be poor or completely cloud out). .This success is important step in optimising the observatory operations since knocking out non-useful data speeds up the whole process of data transfer, data reduction and analysis. It also saves wear and tear to equipment.  Key to this improvement has been the use of the star count from AllSky Camera which provide a better discremination of marginal conditions that the Clarity reading from the Cloud Sensor.   The latter is still used for recognising potential rain clouds.

Lowlights

• User Errors.    Errors at start of session, which unnecessarily led to the whole Observing Software Suite to have to be restarted and a further user errors after the session which didn't switch off the power in the morning and reset the observatort mode, which saw the Observatory automatically startup just after sunset the following evening, and then a error which saw the telescope powered down without parking it will will create issues  and extra user interventation at the start of the next session.

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (API data from darksky.net) Forecast showed some initial clear patches, but with cloud progressively developing through the night, but otherwise dry and calm In the event there was a moderately clear interval between 18:30 and 22:30, with another clear interval at 02:30-03:45.  Transparency wasn't great at any stage. Operations didn't start till suspended at 21:50 and took advantage of clear intervals, suspending when sky deteriorated.

Major Issues

• New version of AstroMain contained a number of bugs in new and recently modified code. Although none of the bugs were critical and of no real surprise given the amount of code development and this was the first live test, collectively they impacted the results from the session.   Most of the bugs were fixed during the session and a new version uploaded and used for the remainder of the session. All the bugs were caused by logic errors (setting a parameter True when it should be False, or testing a parameter to be < value rather than > value.
  Fixed, 2019-11-01 (AstroMain 1.17.4).   

Minor Issues

• Blank Session.NightSummary6.jpg file is still not been successully uploaded to Website at start of new session, even though it is being queued for upload .   Problem was eventually tracked down to a programing error that caused the file to be uploaded to the wrong directory

• Target Frames are being saved to JPG for the second frame of a given target rather than the first frame as intended

• Each time  locate, target and SharpCap frames get converted to JPG's using magick and saved to Live Folder, the command window that pops up is rather annoying.     Fixed by running the shell with  AppWinStyle.MinimizedNoFocus

• Update Scope Power Status from ObsMonitor, rather than ObsOverseerer

• Improve Syncing of Report Comments when Alerts are produced.  Report messages / column positions out of sync during Centering operations for C/2018 N2 comet, due to Obs.Manager Alerts.

• Potential for improving SoftSuspend, by using Clarity as well as StarCount.  So if star count drops to 19 (which would call a SoftSuspend) consider delaying the SoftSuspend call if Clarity is still above say 35 or so.   Similarly if Suspended and StarCount hasn't been over 20 (but <24) for 8 minutes consider resuming early if Clarity is still above say 35 or so.
