Session Aims & Highlights (2020-01-06)

Main aims

1. Targets: Acquire images of a selection of targets including deep sky objects, variable stars, nearby stars and comets.
2. Stability:  Ensure that new version of AstroMain is stable following adjustments to autoguiding/PHD2 and recent bug fixes
3. Guiding:  Continue checking guiding performance after recent changes

• Issue with scope position at start-up.   Scope had to be rebooted and sync'ed on a star (Hamal).  It is presumed this was probably related to the scope not being corrrectly parked at the end of the last session.  Probably was ultimately caused by the Telescope Power being autoswitched off too soon after parking scope.  A 30s delay is now applied before autos-witching off the scope and this and similar problems appears to have been resolved.

• Scope was not correctly parked at end of session. Checking the observatory the following day showed that the scope was at its normal park position,  but was pointing some 20-30 deg off. Upon powering up the scope it proceeded to move some 10 deg to the west after initialisation -  trying to locate its encoder) point), showing the scope hadn't been correctly parked .   Scope was moved to near its Park Position and its position Sync'ed.  The scope was then successfully parked using Scope.ParkScope facility.   This has an 8sec delay built in between parking the scope, and it seemed that this
  To check things were correct the scope was powered up, reconnected , slewed to a point in the West Sky and a further check made that scope would correctly park itself. Problem was most-likely due to the the automated observatory shutdown procedure having just a 1s delay between parking the scope and turning off its power. Delay is partially fixed in AstroMain 3.19.2 by use of 8s delay.   However the routine may need to perform an additional check to see that scope is 'AtPark' and wait a full 30s before powering down the scope using Pegasus Astro UPB powerbox.

Minor Issues

• Problems with telescope jogs whilst centering (total of 17 rogue jogs in the session). Initial problems were consistent with those seen when there has been a problem with scope start-up  e.g.  DY Per had pointing errors of 9.19', 8.4' 9.07', 0.34' and WDS GRB 34 had errors 2.64', 2.91', 3.10',  0.34'.  Although problems reduced after reparking the scope and restarting again.  some problems still persisted, eg.  SY Cnc   5.11', 4.45' , 0.19'  and ER UMa  13.38', 12.52', 11.47', 11.0' Unclear if problem relates to telescope parking / start-up issues of the scope now being too finely balanced, following recent tweaking of the mount/scope. Closed 2020-01-04 as review shows that issue has been resolved (combination of latest DeviceHub, better synchronisation procedures).

• First target (CM Tau) of V2 observing plan was acquired when there were clearly too few stars to warrent execution. V1 Plan finished with the session in a suspended state and the observatory shut.  Whilst conditions weren't bad enough to force continued closure of the observatory they were bad enough with the suspend when stars < 20 option active (<18 with trim in place) to not start a new target. Yet the shutter was opened and the CM Tau target started. Immediately soft supend was called (too few stars :  Clarity 31.4, Stars 3 ) and the session became suspended  after CM Tau target was completed.

• Create a 'Slew to Terrestrial Point' button and routine to aid daytime focusing and alignment procedures.  Scope would slew to a TerrestrialAz, TerrestrialAlt point (with Dome Slaved so that shutter is aligned with the scope), and then set Tracking to Off so that scope view is ixed on the static object
