Session Aims & Highlights (2020-10-28)

Main aims -

1. Cam1 Guiding. Test routines and settings for guiding using LX200/ST10 (main scope, north down images) whilst imaging with TS80/178MC (secondary scope)
2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of deep sky targets
3. Bug fixes.  Check that bugs discovered in last session in AstroMain 3.31.2 have been fixed, and that recent new features are working ok

Highlights

•   Dome Parking.  Data was collected about a issue that has affected the last two session  whereby false alerts are being generated by the observatory control program (AstroMain) during observatory shutdown saying that Dome Parking had failed when the dome had in fact successfuly moved to its park position, allowing a fix to be made to Dome.SlewToAzimuth (90) routine.   Fix to be tested over the course of next few sessions to make sure that it resolved the issue.

Lowlights

•   Cloud. Conditons deteriorated very shortly after starting the session and session suspended itself until dawn due to cloud.
  Cloud prevented testing routines and settings associated with Cam1 guiding (guiding using LX200/ST10 (main scope, north down images) whilst imaging with TS80/178MC (secondary scope)

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (API data from darksky.net) Pre-Session Weather forecast was poor in first part of night (65-89% cloud cover with high probability of rain), but partially clear from 21:00 onwards (dry, light winds and 48 to 51% cloud cover).  Minimum temperature 7°C> In the event rain some rain around dusk quickly stopped and clear patches developed at around 20:30 and 22:30. A session was started but conditions rapidly cloud over and they were no further clear patches suitable for observing. Wind was fairly light and min temperature was .

Critical Issues

•  None

Major Issues

• Job Queue hanging shortly after start of autoguiding (CCDSoft can not open File). Just after beginning to autoguide using TS80/178MC, the job queue execution hung.  After the first occasion where thread was killed to regain control, it was noticed that there was a error window in the background saying "CCDSoft - Can not open file C:\Data\CCD Imaging\New\2020-10-28 S00823\_AutoGuide"  ).
   
  After acknowledging the error execution of the job queue continued but the window prevented non-attended operation of the session.  Report File showing the message "Take Reference Frame   Failed To capture frame (see log file For details)". Log file indicated a number of exceptions associated with SendRequests to PHD2 server and were a variety of failures to plot header information on GuidingCharts.  The exact logfile messages varied from one target to the next suggesting the issue was possibly related to a subtle timing interaction.  Backed up by indications from PHD2 Client logfile, it was postulated that calls to PHD2.GetCcdTemperature from monitoring loop were interfering with normal calls to PHD2 methods from the job queue /autoguiding monitor. Although no problems were seen in last 3 sessions, it was known that there was a fundamental limitation of the current PHD2 client program.  Resolved in-session by installing and using a new version of AstroMain (3.31.4) in which the calls from New Feature (Camera2.ReadCameraTemperature) were disabled.
  Principal solution (to prevent an invalid file path being sent to CCDSoft.Image.OpenImage) was fixed in AstroMain 3.31.5.  Other issues related to underlying cause and the underlying cause tself are handled under a separate issue.
  Resolved in-session 2020-10-29 (AstroMain 3.31.4).  Major issue fixed 2020-10-29 (AstroMain 3.31.5)
   
• Following session suspension at 23:39, the initial command to Close Shutter was not carried out by the Pulsar Dome, and although a backup command to Close Shutter worked the shutter was closed  2 minutes later than it should have. Following SoftSuspend and completion of Target 1/25 (Z And) the Session was suspended at 23:39:29.20 session. Call to objDome.CloseShutter was made at 23:39:29:33 and was received by Pulsar Dome driver at 23:29:29.35(ie within 150ms)  but apart from shutter status momentarily changing to 3 (closing) there was no action from the shutter and shutter status quickly returned to 0 (open). A second request to close shutter  was made at 23:41:14 and this time the shutter closed (finishing at 23:41:59).    A session alert should have been issued when the first attempt to close the shutter failed. A description of the issue has been sent by email to Pulsar Observatories on 2020-11-17 for their comment.  Issue eventually resolved by installation of new (1.25) version of the Pulsar Shutter software on 2021-03-31.

Minor Issues

• Problems performing initial manually initiated Near Zenith Focusing. Both Foc1 and Foc2 failed (22:31).  Not sure why Foc1 focusing failed. Report file say  "Taking 1s image. Failed () ".  Foc2 focusing failed because Lens Cap was still on TS80 secondary scope following early Dark Frame acquisition earlier in the day/evening. Required visit to observatory to remove lens cap.

• Foc1 Offset at start of session was way-off. Whilst wide focus search may have retrieved the situation offset was manually set as observatory was under manual control at the time.  Focus Offset was set to -1587 by the last valid focus profile (Profile 14 in session S821, 2020-10-24, OTA temperature 7.3 degC ).  Although the temperature in first profile in session S823 was very similar (7.0 deg C) it is presumed that the atmospheric properties were just very different  (It is also possible that exercising of the focuser by ASCOM Conform Test before the session had somehow upset the TCF-S focus position).

• Foc2 focusing profile was unable to find certain foc2 'ShCap frames.  eg 9/20 & 13/20 (22:42). This would seem to be side-effect of recently introduced code for calling ShCap. GetCameraTemperature whose responses are interferring responses to request for Foc2 focus frame file paths. Despite this the program didn't suffer any crash and focusing was successfully performed without incident.  The underlying issue is not unlike which impacted usage of PHD2 server.

• Reference Frame not being captured and missing camera/guide information on Guiding Charts.
  At the start of autoguiding,  Report File is showing the message "Take Reference Frame   Failed To capture frame (see log file For details)". Log file indicated a number of exceptions associated with SendRequests to PHD2 server (e.g Exception in PHD2.GetBinning, Conversion from string "Error: camera not connected" to type 'Double' is not valid) and were a variety of failures to plot header information on GuidingCharts.  The exact logfile messages varied from one target to the next suggesting the issue was possibly related to a timing interaction.  It was postulated that calls to PHD2.GetCcdTemperature from monitoring loop were interfering with normal calls to PHD2 methods from the job queue /autoguiding monitor. Although no problems were seen in last 3 sessions, it was known that there was a fundamental limitation of the current PHD2 client program.  Resolved in-session by installing and using a new version of AstroMain (3.31.4) in which the calls from New Feature (Camera2.ReadCameraTemperature) were disabled.  Underlying problem (unmanaged response to PHD2 request from different threads) needs to be fixed.
  Resolved in-session 2020-10-29 (AstroMain 3.31.4).  Fixed underlying issue 2020-10-31 (AstroMain 3.31.7)
   
• Cam2 Temperature chart shows unexpected spikes on temperature curve. It seems that graph is trying to plot to points with value of 0 or vcNull (-99). Investigating code shows that vcNull values are not plotted, suggesting value are 0 ?

• SetCameraSubtract_Dark() routine in AstroShapCap is incorrectly interpreting Camera exposure.value= 20 as being 20ms, when the intended number was 20.0s.  Bin 1 folder reference is also not correct, should be not used (for binning 1) or be \2 (for binning 2)

Problem is due to differences in behaviour working with ZWO ASI178MC (real camera) versus the Simulator camera used during development of this AstroShCap routine. Fixed by using 'SharpCap.SelectedCamera.Controls.Exposure.ExposureMs' to force a value in milliseconds.

• File/document updates from final part of session (from 05:14 onwards) don't seem to have been updated to website. Result of session had to be checked in morning using vnc connection to observatory computer.  Investigating showed the 'Live' folder on Observatory Computer had session files going up to 05:55 (the time that session finished). AstroPlan logs show uploads occuring up to 05:20, but no uploads after that time.  Its unclear what caused AstroPlan web uploader to stop uploading files, there were no error messages and AstroPlan UI was functioning normally. Issue resolved by restarting AstroPlan.
  Resolved 2020-10-29 (Observatory Computer/AstroPlan), but monitor for re-occurences of the same problem.
   
• After Session Suspended (23:59) the Report messages connected to Closing Dome are embedded in the header for the next target, rather than appearing as a footer in the Session Supsended section. This was due to bSoftSuspend flag being cancelled during Set_StateSuspended() routine. Obs. Manager MainLoop code has been modified so that bSoftSuspend flag is instead cancelled  once SessionState=Suspended and Dome.IsClosed = True

• Multiple red alerts during session saying "DomeRecords have stopped updating" and "DomeRecords are not updating"  Attempts to restart Dome connection didn't resolve the problem during the session.   Issue eventually resolved by Dome disconnection/reconnection the next day. The follow-up  'Dome Record are not updating' alerts (every 30min)  should be demoted from Red alert down to Yellow alerts

• FocusTempChart shows spikes dropping down to below Y Min immediately after restarting AstroMain program (with accompanying restart of the Session). Graphs in session S825 show that curve is spike down to a value of 0.0 upon session restart.

• ShCap Console / Report file showing Temperature message line each time ShCap.GetCameraTemperature was called by AstroMain's observatory monitor.  This is a message that was used during testing of the ShCap method which should have been removed before AstroMain Cam2 monitoring via ShCap went live.

• Unhandled Exception in AnalyseMosaicSet due to bad Folder object . Occurred when analysing mosaic frames from NGC 2232. Appears to happen on the second occasion that Analyse Mosaic Set is run ?. AstroMain uses CCDSoft Folder, but in many cases it would be best to use a .Net equivalent to achieve the required functionality.

• Problem with MS Edge (Laptop) not presenting the current session but still presenting cached data from the previous session.  IE 11 (Laptop) and Safari (Ipad) didn't show the problem at the same time, (Safari wasn't showing updated data when session was checked in the morning but this seems to have been a separate issue).  Fix attempted by putting following into page head.

Continuous Improvement

• Whilst on Observing tab the legacy 'Autoguide' button was accidently clicked.  This didn't cause a particular problem because the Autoguide window was exited as soon as user became aware they were on an unexpected form.  Form design has been modified so that the button is now hidden by default.

• Job queue message saying '.. camera not currently in use (as a guider) is no longer appropriate. Message shoul should be modified or removed.

• Extend Title of Session Event "Camera1 SetPoint" to "Camera1 SetPoint Increase" or "Camera1 SetPoint Decrease". Routine doesn't have information to say if set point is being increased.   Temperature therefore added to Event title instead.
