Session Aims & Highlights (2021-01-16)

Main aims

1. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets and deep sky targets as allowed by conditions.
2. Software. Test features recently added to AstroMain 3.34.2

Highlights

• Clear Skies. Skies were clear for the whole night.
• Targets.  x Targets successfully acquired
• Centering.  Targets centering was very good (44 slews, av error 1.2')
• Autoguiding.  Autoguiding performance was good
• New Ideas.  Session inspired a large number of continuous improvement suggestions and ideas (23)

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (API data from darksky.net) Pre-Session Weather forecast showed that after initial cloud (71-78% cloud cover), clear skies would develop for most of the night (16-30% cloud cover) with interval of cloud (41-59% cloud cover) around 02:00/03:00.  No rain. Moderate wind (13-15 mph). with minimum temperature of 3degC by dawn. Wind calm/light in first part of night, but strengthening later reached 17-19 mph by dawn. In the event skies were clear all night, with light wind and minimum temperature of 1 degC.

• Realtime 'Latest' JPG Guide Pictures on Latest Session WebPage are missing 'Guide Reference' and 'Guide Frame' subtitles. This was a sideeffect of new feature in AstroMain 3.34.2 which started using LocateInfo.TargetDisplayName to pass title to ConvertFitsToJpg() routine.  .

Az/Alt Point (with RMS value) is replotted at end of guiding so that point can be filled with colour appropriate to Av.RMS which is only known at end of guiding.

Implemented in AstroMian 3.35.1 and tested in S854.

• Query: Later Image Linking of Target UGCA 105 indicated a rotation angle of  178.63° & Image Scale 1.326"/px. This was noticeably different from expected (179.2° & Image Scale 1.398"). Issue is unexplained. Images were impossible to link to GSC or UCAC Star method, and had to be linked with Simple Link method (387 stars). Sky Location was Az 58° / Alt 68°.

Checking the database via AstroPlan shows that the project is flagged for schedule use and and there are 9 active targets. so its unclear why targets aren't getting scheduled.  Assumed to be just down to chance.  Distant Galaxies were scheduled ok in following session S851.
