Session Aims & Highlights (2021-05-05)

Main aims

1. Scope.Jog.  Test new Scope.Jog routine in AstroMain 3.39.8 that is designed to get around occasional issue where TheSky6/ASCOM gives the error mesage"Unable to start Direct Slew".  Ensure that new Scope.Jog routine doesn't interfere with operations or introduce any bugs/instability. Begin process of determining whether the change solves the occassion problems with 'direct slew' / Job Queue freezing.
2. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions

Highlights

•   Scope.Jog.  The new Scope.Jog routine used in AstroMain 3.39.8 to get around occasional issue whereby TheSky6/ASCOM gives the error mesage"Unable to start Direct Slew" (Initial version contained a bug that produced too many log messages. This was fixed and installed in-session as AstroMain 3.39.9)

• Log File producing too many Jog Monitoring rows (15 rows every 0.01s !). Dramatic increase in number of Log File writes and Log File Size. Bug fixed ( jog monitoring loop in new Scope.Jog routine introduced in AstroMain 3.39.8) was missing a Thread.Sleep (200) statement).  Session stopped in order to install AstroMain 3.39.9 with critical fix.
  Fixed in-Session 2021-05-05 (AstroMain 3.39.9) 
   
• Target 2/16 (UGC 6930) had unusually large 1st and 2nd Locate Point errors (23.94' & 23.79'). Is this the same issue that occurred in session S891 (2021-04-25) ?.  Initial look at report file suggest that both  W and N jogs overshoot causing the scope to end up of the otherside of the target with same amount of point error (ie a double rogue jog).  Target 8/16 (AT2021kmb) also had unusually large 1st and 2nd Locate Point errors (23.54' & 22.23').   Examining Target 2/16 (UGC 6930) the pointing error for Locate 1 was reported as 23.94 when visually the post slew pointing was actually almost spot on.   The Target Cross and Target Ellipse on JPG Picture are correctly drawn.   The large 'corrective' jog after Locate 1 caused by the erronous pointing error explains the large pointing error for Locate 2 (telescope was jogged away from target).  Similarly the Locate 1 Frame for Target 8/16 (AT2021kmb) had a 23.54' pointing error when the actual pointing error was less than 2'.  Other targets didn't have a problem with post-slew pointing error so why were just these 2 targets affected ?   Locate Frame 1 for UGC 6930 had a Linked Screen Rotation of 357.3 rather than 179.8 deg expected.  Locate Frame 1 for AT2021kmb had a Linked Screen Rotation of 357.2 rather than 179.5 deg expected.  This shows the issue is the same issue that occured session S891 (2021-04-25).  Issue was believed to have been fixed in AstroMain 3.39.8 (2021-05-04) but the issue obviously still persists. Investigation determined that this was due to an bug introduced in PositionAndSync() routine in AstroMain 3.39.8 (MisRotation should be < RotateTolerance (not > RotateTolerance ) ).

• Many Frames failed to Image Link when Processing Reduced Images.  Investigation determined that this was due to an bug introduced in PositionAndSync() routine in AstroMain 3.39.8 (MisRotation should be < RotateTolerance (not > RotateTolerance ) )

• Local Files web page doesn't show the session AzAlt Slewing Plan picture.  Existing BuildJpgPicturePage routine is set up to display up to 4 AzAlt Plan Charts having file name format "AzAltChart." + Session.NightDate + " (v" + CStr(i) + ").png".   'Session.Plan.AzAltChart.png' is generated when night's observing plan is created and is uploaded to website for display on the 'current session', but doesn't seem to be transferred to the Session's Log Folder, and is thus not currently available for the Local Files Web Page.  New routine 'CopyAzAltPlanChart() added to AstroMain / LoadPlanFromDBShell() to transfer plan to session' log folder  after plan loaded . Format of the copied file name is changed to "AzAltPlanChart." + NightID + ".v" + CStr(i) + ".png"

• Position of CCD relative to Guide Reference frame for NGC 5018 target is at an unexpected position.  Pointing error indicate a rogue jog even though this was not counted by the Obs.Manager.  Has a Camera moved relative to the other or is this an artifact of the incorrect/non-appropriate LocateInfo data ?.  A brief investigation shows that Guide Reference Frame picture correctly shows the location of the CCD FOV that is associated with the preceding 3rd and final Locate Frame,  but does not represent the location of CCD FOV associted with the following Main Image Frames due to an intervening centering jog.  A 13' correcting jog was made following the 3rd Locate Frame.  In this situation a 4th Locate Frame should have been taken (without jog), otherwise LocateInfo should have been reset with Null values.   It is unclear what caused the HPLocate Centering to stop after only 3 Locate Frames as PointingError_mins  NOT < SU.AcceptablePointingError. Unable to find bug causing the issue.  Extra trace statements added to AstroMain 3.39.10 and future sessions will be monitored for further incidents, but in the meantime the issue will be closed.

• Best Focus Chart started later than other charts. Chart started at 22:30 even though other charts started at 22:00. AstroMain program wasn't restarted  ruling out 'restart' as a factor in the problem.  This is an ongoing issue.  Graph's Start time is taken from MasterGraphStartTime variable unless it hasn't be set yet (ie is vcNullDate) when the StartTime will instead be based on the date/time of the graphs first focus data point.   Trace data (added in AstroMain 3.39.8) provides useful data should narrow down the root of the problem.  Hypothesis is that MasterGraphStartTime is being reset to vcNullDate value between creation of other charts (between 22:29 & 22:31) and the creation of the BestFocus Chart (22:43).   Probably relatest to the time of save/reads of the Session.dat file.
  Code shows MasterGraphStartTime is set to vcNullDate during AssignObservatorySession() routine called either from Obs.Manager.SetupSession when SessionState is SessionState.Initiating and Session is New. This could have happened at 22:31:52, which if so would explain how MasterGraphStartTime could have been reset.   The only other way that MasterGraphStartTime can be set to vcNullDate is if it is read from SessionData file, which can only happen InitialiseSessionData() is called which only happens when AssignObservatoryServices is run. .Extra trace lines and a speculative fix added in AstroMain 3.39.1.  There have been no repeat of the issue in S896-S897 and the Issue is considered to be resolved.

• Whilst Connecting Camera,   the "Ok" result was reported after a 'Setting AutoSave Folder...' message.  Connect Camera is run as a Thread and includes a 3s delay giving lots of opportunity for other processes to insert a message into the reporting queue.   The 'Setting AutoSave Folder' message produced by SetAutoSaveFolder() routine probably relates to proceeding Report Lines that Stop & Restart CCDSoft, (ie from RestartCCDSoft() )  but could be an action from Observatory Monitoring, AssignObservatorySession().  Extra trace lines added in AstroMain 3.39.10
  Closed but monitor for future incidents 2021-05-10  (AstroMain) 
   
• Uploading of session files to website by AstroPlan FTP Uploader stalled at 03:13.   Whilst this is an ongoing occasional issue (last seen in session S877, 2021-03-29, with no occurances in sessions S878 to S893 (2021-04-30) when issue occurs it prevents a rapid check-in on observatory/session status in the morning following a session (stalled upload can make it appear that AstroMain stalled partway through session with potential unparked / unclosed equipment, which then requires remote computer login to investigate/resolve as appropriate).  Extra tracing was added to AstroPlan since the incident in Session S872 (2021-03-17) which will help to narrow down the issue.  (Potential idea of using flag files to monitor and conduct an automated intervention to restart AstroPlan).  The issue with Session.ObservatoryLog.log file in this sessions might have led to or contributed to the issue in this particular case.   Logs show that there were Exceptions in AstroPlan's  UploadFileFTP2  routine  starting at 02:00 and again at 03:13 whilst getting RequestStream for various files.

  Issue is considered to be now resolved (2022-04-26) as there have been no incidients of the problem during the multitude of sessions in Q1 2022.

• Several cases throughout the day of the UPB Switch being disconnected (2021-05-05) .    In each case the UPB Switch is automatically stopped and restarted by AstroMain. These auto-restarts are invariably successful but is there anything that can be done to stop these disconnections from happening.  Log files have unfortunately been deleted on this occasion.  Has the frequency of this problem reduced in Sessions S940+ following the installation of a new Observatory Computer on 2021-12-06 ?

Small Defects

• Problem with formating of Report Message surrounding new Report Messages issued by new Scope.Jog routine. Fixed in-session at same time as bug fix to eliminate unhelpful & unnecessary mutiple Jog Monitoring Rows.

• Exceptions in AstroPlan's  UploadFileFTP2 starting at 01:41 and again starting at 02:23 concerning Session.ObservatoryLog.log

• Initial Focus Temperature Chart was missing a right hand axis line.  Axis missing on chart before graph was extended.  Issue has occurred for seond session in a row. No reason found of issue in S893 session (2021-04-30). Previously no exceptions from FocusTemp.ChartBase() routine.  No indication of issue on graph drawn for short -duration session S893.  Unable to find bug causing the issue.  Extra tracing added to AstroMain 3.39.10.   Issue is considered to be resolved, or not worthy for further work.

• Report Linking time at end of report line for Linking Image (catalog) to shorten Report file and make it more readable. As in

• Target 8/16 (AT2021kmb) has an Object Type value of  *  ?  AT2021kmbn (autoloaded to Targets Database by AstroSN on 2021-04-30) has a TNS Type *,  which was then simply used for Object Type as the TNS Target does haven't have a Host Galaxy.   First time this issue has been seen.  It seems to be data-driven issue. (data from Rochester SN download) .  AstroSN code could be changed to set TNS Type to "unk" Object Type to "unk" or "Unknown Transient" when TNS Type is *.

• Query. On the session's Best FocusChart why doesn't the Best Focus Model line pass through the BestFocus Point from Profile 5 ?  Focus Profile 5 was collected for Nova Per 2020 star field at 23:36 to 23:38. The Focus Profile graph looks ok, it should be a good result, but the report file shows that the focus profile failed QC checks due to 'Ambiguous result'.  Ambiguous result is given if Curve Fit isn't used, which can happens if bf0 < bfAlt - 120 Or bf0 > bfAlt + 120
  For this Profile (BestFocus From Curve, bf0 was 5191, whilst bfAlt was 5324.  The difference (133) meant that bf0 was outside the allowed range.    The tolerance has been increased from +/- 120 to +/- 150 in AstroMain 3.39.13

• Modify code to achieve a clear separation between performing Plate Solution and performing Sync & Mapping.   The existing routine PositionAndSync is too complex and makes debugging issues and code maintainence more difficult that needed.
