Session Aims & Highlights (2021-10-14)

Main aims

1. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
2. AstroMain Test fixes and new features in AstroMain 3.44.1

•  AstroMain.  AstroMain 3.44.1 confirmed to have fixed a number of issues.
   
•  Cloud.  Cloud unfortunately developed after less than one hour, so only a few targets were acquired.

• AstroAllSky measurement of sky properties from Difference Images is sometimes returning 0 for FWHM & C Terms , which are then passed through to Sky Quality chart.  Bad values need to be caught and either corrected if a bug or othewise set to vcNull value in order to prevent bad numbers creeping through to the Sky Quality Chart . The SkyQuallity.AddData routine to alsoo make extra data checks before plotting such data. Fixed in shortterm by implementing data check in AstroMain's SkyQualityChart.AddData

• Realtime Spectra Charts are being drawn with the original CCDSoft generated Fits Image name that includes Ra/Dec coords, rather than cleaned up Fit name. Filenames displayed on Spectra Profile chart would have RA/Dec coords removed. eg. the file name '00925009.18h37m10s 38d47m92N.FIT' should be cleaned up to '0925009.FIT'

• Extract Spectra process is not working correctly for Targets using non-zero offsets. Following a query as to why the realtime spectra Chart for RR Lyr is very noisy, it was identified that the recently introduced ExtractSpectra() routine is unable to handle cases where the Target Observation is using non-zero target offset.  LocateInfo.x/LocatInfo.y coords used for selecting the spectra ROI .  This fine for cases like Vega where there are no target offsets, but where the offsets are non zero, the  LocateInfo.x/LocatInfo.y coords give the coords which need to be centered, but are not representative of the target star itself.  Fixed by using TargetInfo.ObjectX & TargetInfo.ObjectY when LocateInfo.bOffsetObject = True.

• Cropping of rotated Spectra images fails when Star XY is less than a certain distance from right of image.  After fixing the issue that Extract Spectra was working with non-zero offsets it exposes and issue that right hand edge of Spectra Window (ROI) lies beyond the right edge of the image, causing an 'Index out of bounds' exception when trying to copy pixels from rotated spectra's data array to the cropped spectra's image array. Fixed by resetting the ROI so that it doesn't exceed valid bounds.   This exposes an issue with the current method of rotating & cropping spectra that causes the spectra to be artifically cropped.

• Star's spectra is being cropped when when Star XY is less than a certain distance from right of image.  After fixing the issue that Extract Spectra was working with non-zero offsets and fixing the issue that Index out of bounds' exceptions were being generated is Star XY is less than a certain distance from right of image, it was found that the method of rotating image about the StarXY was causing the far end of the spectra of RR Lyr to be removed from the rotated spectra image. The RotateImage() routine needs to perform a translation operation that repositions the target star at the centre of the image before rotation in order to preserve the entire spectra with the image bounds.  In practice the translation and rotation can probbably be performed as a single step. (ie get rotated pixel value, then store it in the translated coord position).  Note that we need to return the translated Star Coords and ROI position so that we subsequently crop the rotated image to the correct Region of Interest.

• The NightSummary plot doesn't appear to show Near Zenith Focusing as being an 'active telescope' operation when it clearly is. Fix attempted in AstroAllSky 3.12.3 but will need to check next session. Seems ok. Issue closed.

Small Defects

• Expected legend with latest values is not being displayed on new Sky Quality Chart.  It is hypothosed that an 'exit sub' code line at the beginning of  top of DrawLegend routine that was used during code development wasn't taken out before making the final build used for the live session.

Continuous Improvement

• Sky Quality chart axes to be revised in order to better display the data (Av Image Diff (Centre Offset), C Term, AllSky Stars,  Clarity). First version of chart is a prototype and seeing it with real data displayed show that there is a clearer/better way of displaying that data. Instead of 0 to 180 (left axis)  and 60 to 0 (right axis) it is proposed to move to 0 to 360 (right axis) and -60 to 60 (left axis).  Also add RMS value with a right axis scale 20 to 200.

• Query. Realtime Spectra plot for RR Lyr is very noisy. Is this due to poor sky or underexposure. To investigate & review. This would seem to be due to the target having a non-zero target offsets so that  LocateInfo.x/LocatInfo.y coords used for selecting the spectra ROI is not representative of the target star itself.  The Extract Spectra routine consequently failed to extract a valid spectra, it was just noise or Item is closed as the problem has been raised as a Minor Issue (see above).

• 'Dome is closing' report message should be extended to show key weather metrics (Clarity, Stars, Rain, Wind). The Closing Dome report message to be extended in a similar manner to the 'Opening Dome' which was recently modified to indicate precisly this set of weather metrics.

• After VR frames (15s V, 20s B) were cancelled to prevent target overrunning its time slot, the job executor proceeded to change to S Filter and then after filter had changed it proceeded to cancel the 3 x 30s S Filter frames. Cancellation could/should have been predicted and the unnessary filter change could have avoided saving a few seconds for the next target.

• Frames from RR Lyr (including all its S Filter frames) were cancelled to prevent target overrunning its time slot, only to to give up its time to its own Calibration_After target (Vega).  The Calibration After (spectra) frames obtained from Vega are arguably of little/no value since no S Filter (spectra) frames were obtained for RR Lyr itself.  End slot for RR Lyr should have been stretched to the endtime of the Calibration After target, as this would have secured data from RR Lyr without effecting the next main target.

• Extra time allowance should be given to Spectral (S Filter) frames to allow for additional realtime processing from creating rotated & cropped FITS image and extracting and creating JPG picture of the target object.

• Rotated & cropped .rot FIT files were produced for each 0.11s S Filter frame for Vega, but a spectral chart was only generated for the first frame. This might happen because JPG images weren't generated for 2nd and subsequent images due to the restriction that image exposure must be more than 5s and they may not have been a valid JpgImageNum available for the SpectralChart plotting. A requirements review is needed (should the set of 0.11s frames be taken as quickly as possible or should the frames be spread-out using 5s gaps to allow the time for the generation of JPG pictures and associated spectral charts).

• Obs.Manager continued in suspended state for quite a long time after sky moved to Clarity 36/Stars 40 conditions. Finally it opened the dome at 22:12 and resumed the job queue under deteriorating conditions (Clarity 34, Stars 29, Threat of Rain) only for it to suspend the session and close the shutter at 22:14 (with a unitless rain rate of 1.0).  Algorithms to be reviewed/audited - are they understandable & appropriate ?
