Bullet Investigation -  Slow Dome Slews, Session S997

Session Aims & Highlights (2022-03-31)

Main aims

  1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
  2. AstroMain.  Check new AstroMain verson 3.50.9 to ensure that it hasn't introduced any issues for live operations.

Investigation -  Slow Dome Slews, Session S997

Issue.  Four dome slews took an unexpectedly long time :

 1) slew to Focus Field 10 (89.9° in 115s, 0.78 °/s)
 2) slew to NGC 5718 (84.6°in 240s, 0.35 °/s)
 3) slew to NGC 4615 (40.2° in 131s, 0.31 °/s),
 4) slew to SS Cyg  (176.5° slew in 218s, 0.81 °/s),

Analysis

Slew 1 (22:32)
- Slew started from Az 90.3°   (why doesn't slew start from Az 90.0°
- Azimuth fluctuating between 90.3 and 90.4° during first 58s
- Azimuth fluctuating between 90.4° and 90.7 or 90.8°  during next 13s
- Slewed from 91.1° and 180.2 over next 43s (89.1° in 43s,  2.07°/s)
- Looks like dome motors were spinning on roughly same the  spot for first 71s, before grabbing and then performing a normal slew.

Slew 2 (02:52)
- Slew started from Az 306.4°
- Staggered slew with semi-stationary interval at Az 291.5° (70s),  Az 268.2° (38s),  Az 247.0° (39s) &  Az 221.2° (43s at end).
- Looks like dome motors were spinning at a number of spots, grabbing ok in between
- When the semi-stationary intervals (totalling 190s) are removed the active slew rate (84.6°in (240- 190)s,  1.68°/s) is within the normal range.

Slew 3 (03:49)
- Slew started from Az 275.9°
- Staggered slew with semi-stationary interval at Az 268.3° (47s),  Az 246.9° (55s).   These are  'flat-spots' are amoungst the flats-spots seen during slew 2.
- When the semi-stationary intervals (totalling 102s) are removed the active slew rate (40.2°in (131- 102)s,  1.39°/s) is within the normal range.

Slew 4 (04:10)
- Slew started from Az 240.9°
- Slew held up at Az 222° (92s)   Slipping over range ~ 223.1 to 221.6°
- When semi-stationary interval is removed the active slew rate (176.5° in (218-92)s,  1.40°/s) is within the normal range.

Conclusion

In each of these 4 case was dome rotation was held up at particular azimuths when dome motors seem to be slipping given very limited rotation of the dome which lasts until motors grab the dome flange and rotation picks up to normal rates.

Flat spots identified
 Az 90.3,   Az 222°,   Az 247°,   Az 268°,  Az 291°

Issue is believed to be due to a combination of grease/dew on the dome flange and the non-perfect geometry of the dome roof related to original installation.
