Session Aims & Highlights (2023-01-25)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. AstroMain. Check new 3.60.11 version of AstroMain for any issues introduced by recent bug fixes and small improvements

Highlights

• Targets. Only 4 targets out of 36 planned targets were completed with an additional 5 targets partially completed. Other targets weren't acquired due to cloud, or weren't attempted due to the session being terminated early due to expected continuation of cloud with rain showers
• AstroMain. There were no new issues introduced by the new AstroMain version (3.60.11)
• Dome Slews. No dome slews were affectced by holdups (Hold Up Stats: 0/13 slews affected, 0%, 0.2 minutes total hold-up time).

• Dome didn't park during Closing Session operations (04:33). User intervention made at 04:33:25 to trigger the ObsManager to stop Job Queue and Close/Finish Session. After entering Closing Session state at 04:33:32, the Dome was checked and the shutter was found to be already closed (Closed at 02:52, closing time 50s). Operation should then proceed to Park Dome, but instead of reporting a Park Dome subtitle, and proceeding to move the dome to Az 90deg an information message was reported "Park Dome has been waiting for more than 3 minutes", and the operation moved on to  'Disconnect PHD2' and 'Park Telescope' etc which proceeded ok.     After the live session finished and the general session was reopened a Manual intervention was made to use the 'Park Dome' button facility.   At end of the S1088 session (2023-01-18) the Park Dome operation also failed and an investigation concluded that failure was due to the dome making a 1 deg slaving movement at the moment that SlewToAzimuth (90) was being commanded, and code was added to SetState_Closing in AstroMain 3.60.10 to turn off slaving.   Logs show Slaving being turned off at 04:33:27.60, the Dome Shutter status being checked at 04:33:37.60 (Closing Stage 0).   At 04:33:38.75 (just a second later) the logs shows WaitForDomeToPark message "Exiting ClosingStage=3 due to 3 minute timeout".  And by 04:33:38.85 operations had moved on to Disconnect PHD2 operations (ClosingStageNo = 4). Code examined, bug found in ClosingStage=1 whereby when Shutter is closed, Closing Stage is incremented twice (instead of once), causing operations to totally miss Closing Stage 2 which would normally command the Park Dome operation.

• Performance of Observatory WebSite seems to have deteriorated.  Unclear if this relates to the website now delivering pages as https instead of http, a separate issue with the host provider, or something else.  PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) was used to analyse the critical pages on the Observatory WebSite.  Examples of improvements inclusion of image width & height where known and fixed (not possible for certain images such as time charts which will always vary in width and length).    Changed

  Some recommendations (e.g. use of NextGen Image formats) will take time to investigate, other recommendations (eg Serve static assets (ie remove ?=rand(1,1000000)? ) are not applicable as there is a need to serve freshest available data.  Made some improvements which helped and these, together with possible improvements at the web host server, have improved the situation considerably.  Issue closed after review 2023-01-29

• Telescope slewing shows point errors of around 12'.  Pointing errors at start of sessiom were 12' (progressively improving through session due to automated self-correction). This is most likely due to reattachment of SBIG Camera to the telescope. Held by 3 screw threads the camera is likely in a slightly different position to previous session. Telescope was resynced at start of next session and a short mapping job was after which telescope was parkedturned off and then restarted. Slew errors reduced to < 2 or 3'.

• Guide Reference Pictures indicate a noticeable discrepency between the rotation of Cam1 and Cam2 (23:55). The yellow Cam1 FOV insert in the Cam2 Guide Reference indicate a misalignment of some kind. Examining pictures of MCG +5-26-43 w/SN2023af shows Cam1 Rotation angles of 180.0 or 180.1°.  (so ok), whilst Cam2 Rotation angle is 358.5° (should be 360°, so out by 1.5°).  Cam2 pictures from other targets similarly show angle of 358.5 +/- 0.1° . The ZWO 178MC Camera (Cam2)  need to be rotated to 360.0° position (i.e. anticlockwise rotation by 1.5°) at the start of the next session.   Solution implemented in AstroMain 3.61.6 which moves code over to using AstroMain's own CalcRaDecToXY() routine instead of CCDSoft.Image.RaDecToXY routine. This routine  is used when an Image has been linked ok via a simple link method but fails to Insert a WCS, and has already shown that it can successfully used and avoids the occassional issue associated with the CCDSoft.Image.RaDecToXY routine

Small Defects

• AzAlt Result Chart legend has 'Forecast Wind' when it actually represents 'Current Wind'.   Legend to be changed from 'Forecast Wind' to 'Wind'

• Discrepency noted between the length of the Wind Direction indicators on the AzAltPlan Chart and those the AzAltResult Chart. The AzAltPlan Chart has much longer indicators than the indicators drawn on AzAltResult chart. Tracing added to AstroPlan (1.35.12) & AstroMain (3.60.12).  Trace Data collected from session S1094 (2023-01-29) shows that the CurrentWindSpeed value is multiplied by a wind speed factor (SU.WindScaleFactor) of 0.70 when the speed is read in from Synoposis data record .  This modified wind speed is then used for the Wind Indicator on AzAltResult Chart in AstroMain. This is thus smaller than the unmodified Forecast Wind Speeds that are used for the Wind Indicators on the AzAlt Plan Chart in AstroPlan and thus explains the discrepency noticed between the two charts.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.61 by dividing the modified CurrentWindSpeed by SU.WindScaleFactor before using it for the AzAltResult Chart.

• Session Events table and Session Alerts table generated via 'Save .htm Reports' should add 'text-align: left;' to style of tables. This is to allow text in tables columns to be left justified (rather than centre justified)  when converting pages to use the simple <!DOCTYPE html> form of page. Problems were seen with table when preforming experimental revision to 'notes-2023-01-18.htm' and this was the workaround used. Fonts in page also changes when using the simple !DOCTYPE format.

• Look into optimising the compression used for jpg pictures. Particularly the large images like AllSky.LatestImage.an.jpg, AllSky.LatestNightSummary6.jpg.  Jpg pictures in AstroAllSky are current stored with a 95% quality level producing typical sizes of Annotated File. Tests show compression level of 20% (quality of 80%) has minimal differences from original and can reduce a NightSummaryPlo6  from 444 KB to 221 KB and reduce an Annotated AllSky Plot from 289 KB to 88 KB and reduce a PanNorth image from 108 KB to 47 KB.  Added new global JpgSaveQuality As Long = 80&  to AstroAllSky 3.18 (and used it  instead of  95&).  JpgEncoder using a JpgSaveQuality quality factor added to AstroObsCam 1.11.4, but using the encoder with quality 80& and code line 'capImage.Save(gFramePath, jgpEncoder, myEncoderParameters)' caused  a typical ObsCam jpg filesize to go up to 190 KB  from original filesize of 170 KB ( using previous code  'capImage.Save(gFramePath, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Jpeg)' to a new figure of 190 KB. Quality of 70& gets the filesize down to 165 KB, Quality of 60& gets the filesize down to 147 KB for little/no noticeable observable changes deterioration in picture quality.

• Look into serving web site images up in next-gen formats. Image formats like WebP and AVIF often provide better compression than PNG or PEG, which means faster downloads and less data consumption.  WebP seems to be supported by a wider range of browsers than AVIF (the latter may not be supported by Edge). This is not as straightforward as it seems and requires a larger authoring overhead.  File size of most frequently accessed JPGs (NightSummaryPlots, AllSky Images, ObsCam) have been reduced through greater compression, reducing the benefit in looking at Nex-Gen formats.
