Session Aims & Highlights (2023-10-11)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. Comets. Acquire images of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks,  C/2023 H2 (Lemmon) and
3. AstroMain. Check new AstroMain version (3.62.17) for recent fixes and improvements.

Highlights

• Targets.22/33 planned targets were completed and an additional 3 targets were partially completely. In addition 1 ToO target ( 12P/Pons-Brooks, ) was completed. Other targets failed due to missed start (cloud) or cloud/session suspension.
• AstroMain. No issues with new AstroMain version (3.62.17)
  Comets. Images were successfully acquired from 2 of the 3 specified priority comet targets specified in the night's observing plan (12P/Pons-Brooks,  C/2023 H2 (Lemmon) .
•  Dome Slews. There were 9 significant issues with dome slewing during the session with individual delays up to 226s and causing a total delay of 19 minutes
   (Hold Up Stats: 9/31 slews affected, 30%, 19.3 minutes total hold-up time).  Dome parked ok.
•  AllSky Camera. AllSky Camera Images were clear of dew/condensation following recent reopening of Camera's hemisphere & wiping dry).

• Dome Slews were badly affected by hold-ups during the session. 9 dome slews (30%) were affected by significant hold-up,  with individual delays up of 224s (Hold Up Stats: 9/30 slews affected, 30%, 19.3 minutes total hold-up time).  This wasted around 19 minutes of time. Again fortunately it didn't lead to any lost targets (due to good slewing/centering performance and the absence of any camera issues etc).  Issue was previously improved by an adjustment to the Dome's Drive Wheel tension but still occurs occasionally (e.g. S1142, S1143, S1145, S1154, S1156) but are interpersed with other sessions (eg S1140, S1141, S1144) where there were no or very few hold-ups.   Heavy dew is thought to be the main factor on this causing this issue. Dome Wheels to be checked and dome flange cleaned / dried. As a way for reducing the problem is there a way of attaching a sponge or something to a one part of the observatory wall that would wipe the flange dry during dome rotation ?   As an experiement a piece of foam attached to one of the observatory's 4 dome 'clamps' today, 2023-10-16, in a way that it wipes the inner face of the roof flange as the dome rotates.  It is unclear if this will help or not (one risk is that if the foam doesn't dry between sessions the dew collected by foam in one dew affected session could spread unwanted moisture onto the flange at a following dew-free session, and introduce a dome slewing problem. This didn't produce any improvement and was dropped.   Anti-Slip Tape was later applied to the roof flange (see  Anti-Slip Tape for improving Observatory Dome Rotation (2023-10-27) ) which produced some improvement, but in the process of fitting the tape it was discovered that one of the drive wheels is loose due to wear/failure of the drive wheel connector (see Pulsar Dome - Loose Rotation Drive Wheel (2023-10-27) ). A replacement Drive Wheel & Connector eventually arrived on 2023-11-17 and was successfully installed in the Observatory (See Pulsar Dome - Replacement Rotation Drive Wheel, 2023-11-17 ).

Minor Issues

• Shutter and Telescope Flag Bars on NightSummaryPlot6 showing unexpected breaks (21:45 to 23:55). For a 2 hour period the NightSummaryPlot6 showed anomalous Shutter and Telescope information bars,with both bars showed unexpected breaks (see Night Summary Plot above). The Shutter bar was expected to be a continuous thick bar (Shutter Open) whilst the Telescope flag bar was expected to be a semi-continuous thick bar.  It is hypothesed that AstroAllSky's NightSummaryPlot AddLine() routine was responding to chnaging ObsEnv messages which alternated between active Shutter and Telescope flags sent from the Observatory Computer and inactive Shutter & Telescope flags sent from the Development Computer which was undergoing testing at the same time.  An Observatory Test Session was known to be running around the same time which was testing ZigBee / Greenhouse Sensor testing. Checking log files shows that the ObsEnv service was running between 21:42  and 23:57 which confirms the above hypothesis. AstroMain to be modified so that it is running on the Development Computer it doesn't forward TCP messages / ObsEnv records to the AllSky/Weather Computer.  Examining the code in AstroMain's ObsEnv.MainServerLoop() routine shows that ObsEnv records can only be sent out when the AstroMain program is being run on the Observatory Computer (Environment.MachineName = "LAPTOP9"), and therefore they couldn't have been sent from the Development Computer to AstroAllSky running on the AllSky/Weather Computer.  Other possibilities is that the breaks in the information bars are associated with TCP/IP message records sent from AstroMain's TelePosition service on the Development Computer. Looking at Annotated AllSky Images between 21:42 and 23:57 shows images annotated with position of the Scope, the Active Target & Next 3 Targets, alternating with images without annotated scope/target positions. The later are believed to be associated with occasions when TelePosition message records were recieved from the Development Computer.  Fix in AstroMain 3.63 so that TelePositions records can only be sent when AstroMain program is running on the Observatory Computer (Laptop11). This will restrict ability to test certain operations from Development Computer e.g.  the actual sky conditions at a target location can only be determined / and sent back by AstroAllSky program on the AllSky/Weather Computer, if TelePosition records are sent (this capabilty may have to be retro-enabled as and when there is a need).

Small Defects

• Using 'Move Label1 here' or 'Move Label2 here' in AstroMain's Image Builder should always make the relevant label checked and redraw the image (Post Session/Analysis).  Currently if the Label (Label 1 or Label 2) isn't checked the label position is modified when 'Move Label x here ' is used but the image isn't redrawn showing the label. Fixed in AstroMain 3.63.

Continuous Improvement

• Add button to AstroMain's ImageSets tabs that will open FV program with the "FIT.fit" version of combined image. After making a FIT.fit version of an image using Nebulosity's 'synthetic flat fielder', the file has to be currently selected in object folder, and opened in CCDSoft and then use the 'Open FV' button facility (and then later close the image in CCDSoft). New Button '">> Open FV (.FIT.ft)" and button routine  'btnOpenFvWithFITfit()' and work routine 'OpenFvWithFITfit()' added in AstroMain 3.63.  At same time the button routine and work routine for ">> Open FV" renamed as btnOpenFvWithActiveImage() and OpenFvWithActiveImage()  respectively. Both workroutines access a new version of StartFvApplication()  passing a new 'FileName' variable.

• Modify NightSummary6 annotation to show 'Dome Shutter' instead of 'Shutter'.  Changing the annotation to 'Dome Shutter' is a more precise description of the data column.

• Check / empty the 'water collecting vessel' on the Observatory's Dehumidifier.   Dehumidifier checked 2023-10-16 and found to be 80-90% full.  'Water collecting vessel' emptied and replaced.'

• Create a Camera Angle vs Hour Angle Plot.  Camera Angle plots for Cam1 (SBIG Camera attached to Main Scope) and Cam2 (ZWO 178MC Camera attached to piggy-backed Secondary Scope show i) in-session angle variations of +/- 0.25°  ii) an apparent close correlation between Cam1 and Cam2 camera's.  The data doesn't support a differential flexing of secondary scope/optical train relative to the main scope, and instead suggest that yhere might be either 1) a flexing that  effects both optical trains / both cameras, or the effects of polar misalignment.  A Camera Angle vs Hour Angle Plot would be useful information to move forward on understanding the variations in hour angle seen.  Plots could be produced for both real-time session and for post-session reduced FITS analysis.  Cam1AngleChart.AddData() is called from OB.CentreTarget() and btnMeasureCam1RotationAngle () / RunMeasureCam1CameraAngle().  New Charts objects (Cam1AngleVsHourAngleChart & Cam2AngleVsHourAngleChart) created in AstroMain 3.63 which use new class objects TCameraAngleVsHourAngleChart that are very loosely based on the existing TCameraAngleChart class.  Existing function globals. GetLHA_now(Ra) can be used to get hour angle from RA of linked image.

• Upload and display Camera Angle vs Hour Angle Plot on website's Current/Last Session page and on Local Files (Pictures) page.  AstroMain 3.63 has just been modified to create Camera Angle vs Hour Angle plots (see ticket above) which are copied to the Live folder with the names 'Session.Cam1Angle_HourAngleChart.png' and 'Session.Cam2Angle_HourAngleChart.png' . To make them convenientally accessible AstroPlan's WebLoader needs to automatically upload newly saved updates these files to the website, the Current Session web page (session_current.htm) needs to be updated to display these new charts in the 'Camera 1' and 'Camera 2' sections,  and AstroMain's Build Local JPG page' routine ('BuildJpgPicturePageNew()')  needs to be updated to display these charts.
