Session Aims & Highlights (2023-11-08)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.

Highlights

• Targets. 35/37 planned targets observations were completed with 3 further targets partially completed.  Other targets failed due cloud / session suspension
•  Dome Slews. Dome slews from first half of session all completed without any hold-ups or delays.  But suddenly dome performance suddenly degraded for slew to
   (Hold Up Stats:10/39 slews affected, 26%, 29.4 minutes total hold-up time). 
•  Dome Parking.  Dome was unable to park at Az 90.0 and finished the night at Az 90.3 following slewing difficulties due to loose a drive wheel. Shutter battery was unable to automatically re-charge following the session, requiring that dome be moved to correct park position later on under manual control.

• Dome Slewing Performance suddenly degraded part way through session. Slew performance which had been very good in first part of session with no hold-ups or delays, suddenly worsened with slew to Target (29/P S.. ) and following slews with several encountering delays of 180-230s  (See Fig 1). Dome was unable to park at Az 90 deg (the slew gave up at 90.s deg).  Daytime investigation the following morning showed that the bush-fix to the loose drive wheel had failed.  Bush-fix was re-done before the next session, whilst wait for a replacement drive wheel connector continues. Replacement drive wheel was eventually installed in the Observatory on 2023-11-17 (See Pulsar Dome - Replacement Rotation Drive Wheel, 2023-11-17).

• JPG Pictures of Focus Frames are all missing a box & label around the Focus Star. Example is Target 10/37 (AT2023txn). Need to check on which session/which AstroMain version this problem first started, as the Focus boxes were at one stage being drawn ok.   Boxes were being drawn ok in Session S1157 (2023-10-16, AstroMain 3.63) but weren't being drawn in S1158 (2023-10-22, AstroMain 3.63.2) and later. This was around the time that ConvertFitsToJPG() routine was being extended to create 'Detail'(125% sized & cropped) pictures. (AstroMain 3.63.1).   AT2023txn was replayed  post-session (excluding guiding) using AdHoc Observing  and again the Focus Box wasn't drawn confirming the issue that was seen in the live session.

• ROI Guide region drawn on JPG Picture for of Cam2 Guide Reference for AT 2023tow is incorrect.  Height of ROI rectangle drawn on the Guide Reference JPG Picture for Target 3/37 (AT2023tow) is shortened and looks like the ROI region that would be calculated and used for a faster moving Comet. It is possibly relevant that the preceeding target (2/37, 12P/Pons-Brooks) was a comet though not particularly fast moving (Ra 48.34 arcsec/hr, Dec -18.41 arcsec/hr), and also followed by a comet (4/37, C/2023 S2 (ATLAS)) moving at Ra 192.95 arcsec/hr, Dec 15.83 arcsec/hr. ConvertFitsToJPG() routine simply draws the RoiBox that is it sent.  In the case of a Guide Reference Frame this RoiBox is sent from StartPHD2Guiding() routine (via a call to SaveGuideImageToJPG() routine). The RoiBox is formed from a ROI region. For gGuideScope = 2 (ie TS80/178MC) the border left, right, top, bottom are set to 0.11.  Top/Bottom borders are set to 0.4 (give a shortened height) if RateOfDecMotion < - 200 or RateOfDecMotion > 200. RateOfRaMotion is currently hard-coded to 0 and therefore the left/right borders are currently not overwritten, but RateOfDecMotion is supplied as a parameter to StartPHD2Guiding, which is itself a parameter in the calling routine (StartGuider() ). This is called by OB.StartTargetGuiding() routine which calls Guider.StartGuider() with the RateOfDecMotion value of T.DecRate.  T.Dec is set in LookupKeyTargetInfo () and LookupRaAndDecRates() routines, but T.DecRate is only set to a non-zero value if T.ObjectType is a "Comet", "Asteroid" or "Minor Planet", otherwise it is set to 0 (or 0 if there is an exception getting a rate from TheSky6). "AT2023tow's ObjectType is "Nova" and it it impossible to see how DecRate was set to a number greater than +/- 200 or otherwise how the Top Border could have been set to 0.4 for this target.  Issue is put down as unexplainable glitch, and propose to monitor for future.  Tracing added to AstroMain 3.64.3 directly ahead of call to Guider.StartGuider and upon entering the StartPHD2Guiding() routine. Closed for now.

• JPG Pictures of Focus Frame and Main Frames for several targets are missing the expected Target Circle/Ellipses. Around 25-30% of targets are missing target circles and/or ellipses from Main Frames.  Where they are missing from the Main Frames they are always also missing from the preceeding Focus Frame pictures. Targets circles/ellipses are drawn ok on Locate and Cam2 Reference Frames for these same targets.  Example is Target 10/37 (AT2023txn). This was replayed post-session (excluding guiding) using AdHoc Observing and the target circle was drawn ok on Focus Frame & Main Frame JPG pictures (unlike the live session where the target circle wasn't drawn).  The issue didn't effect the following session (S1164, 2023-11-09) and it is possible that the fix for the missing Focus Star Boxes somehow also resolved the occasionally missing Target Circle/Ellipses problem. Even so it is still a mystery while the problem only affected the JPG images from certain targets.  Propose to monitor the next few sessions to see if the issue has gone or still occasionally occurs.   A similar case happened in session S1166 (2023-11-12, AT2023wvl) after which trace message added to AstroMain 3.64.6 in order to understands the circumstances when the issue next arises.  Ticket closed after review 2024-03-25 as issue hasn't occured in last 3 months and seems to have been resolved. Any new future issues with Target Circle drawing will be raised as new  tickets if/when they occur.

Small Defects

• Character space is missing in the description of 'Actual Start' on Target Info Chart. A character space is missing between the 'Date/Time' and the '(Local, BST)' parts of the description (e.g.  "Actual Start:   2023-10-17 04:31(Local, BST)" ).

Continuous Improvement

• Add a 'JPGS' Folder Link to AstroMain's Observing/OnTheFly tab.  This is for convenience when replaying target imaging from an earlier live session.
