Session Aims & Highlights (2023-11-11)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. Shutter Sensor - Continue to check functioning and integration of new zigbee sensor ('Shutter Top') for sensing when the shutter is fully open and its reporting through the new AstroMain version 3.64.5

Highlights

• Targets. 31/36 planned targets observations were completed with 2 further targets partially completed.  Other targets failed due a shutter issue. Images from 2 targets t the end of session were likely rejected due to developing cloud.
•  Dome Slews. Majority of dome slews were completed without any hold-ups or delays,  but an issue part ways the sessions saw a failure in earlier bush-fix re-repair required a in-session re-repair of the loose drive wheel
    (Hold Up Stats:3/36 slews affected, 8%, 9.6 minutes total hold-up time). 
•  Dome Parking.  Dome didn't parked at correct physical azimuth at end of session (probably 1.0 deg off) Shutter battery didn't automatically begin re-charging following the session.

• Dome Slewing Performance suddenly degraded part way through session. Slew performance which had been very good in first part of session with no hold-ups or delays, suddenly worsened with slews to Target 7/36 (NGC 7625), Target 8/36 (UGC 831) & Target 9/36 (AT2021afdl)  taking 217-240s and in some cases not reaching the target.  Issue was noticed during remote monitoring and after halting the dome slews and halting the session a visit was made to the observatory in order to re-fix the loose drive wheel, which is now known to be principal cause of poor slewing performance.  Exposing the drive wheel showed that the earlier bush fix on 2023-11-09 had failed. After re-fixing the issue the session was re-continued.  Full resolution of the issue requires installation of a replacement drive wheel connector but this is still waiting on a delivery from Pulsar Observatories.  i

Small Defects

• AstroMain's ObsManager unexpectedly issued a yellow alert with message "Shutter battery level has fallen below 88%".  The Yellow alert  "Shutter battery level has fallen below 88%" was given at 2023-11-11 11:08:07 and was followed by a green alert at 11:10:32 (just 2.5 minutes later) with the message "Shutter battery level has climbed above 95%.  This has happened because 1) Dome opening/closing was being tested which reduced the Shutter Battery level 2) the session wasn't a live session (where a fall in battery level would be normal) and was picked up in the ObsManager's  'Check ShutterBattery' section as per design.

• AstroMain UI and ObsManager seems to have hung for up to 33s (Pre-Session, 2023-11-11). During earlier general sessions ObsOverseer raised a red alert at 00:24:50 with the message "AstroMain UI appears to have stopped responding at 00:24" and the following morning at 11:00:06 a further red-alert with raised with the message "AstroMain UI appears to have stopped responding at 10:59". In each case the AstroMain UI started responding again after 30-33s. In first case (2023-11-10 General Session) an Open Dome operation was followed by a 'Take ObsCam Image' operation  which resulted in the following report messages

  Problem in each case seems to be that the TakeObsCam Image is conducted on the main UI thread rather than being spun off to a worker thread.
  Modifications made to AstroMain 3.64.6, the TakeObsCam Imade is no longer presented as an option unless bLiveSession is true.  If user agrees to take a Starting ObsCam Image, the operation is now performed as a thread and a wait loop (inclusive of Application.DoEvents) is conducted that waits for bTakingSpecialObsCamImage flag to become false or exits after a 15s timeout.

• Observing Result chart has target names overposting at 10th position.  These are most-likely the names of the targets that were affected by dome slew issue and repair.   The names that are overposted are most-likely Target 9/36 (AT2021afdl) which was aborted, Target 10/36 (SN 2023bid ) which missed start and possibly Target 11/36 (NGC 6745 w/SN) . Target Results are added to Chart by call to AzAltChart.AddAzAltResult. Tracing has been added to AstroMain 3.64.6 to record exactly what get's posted on the AzAltResultChart and when.  Closed for now.
  Closed 2023-11-13 (AstroMain 3.64.6) - Closed for now, but look at tracing messages in log in event of future occurance.
   
• Two frames from target 'Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks' had bad light artifacts and weren't usable. Two frames from Target 2/35 (12P/Pons-Brook) had bad light artifacts. Image 4/7 had a light pattern that looked like light leakage from ObsCam. T his wouldn't be expected at this point (Images Frame 1-3 were affected by this artefact). Image 6/7 had a different light artefact, with diagonal light effect which wasn't seen on any of the other 6 images.  Investigating does indicate any activity in observatory at the time, however AllSky Camera View indicate fireworks were being fired into the sky from neighbouring property.  AllSky View at the time of Image 6 shows a firework exploding in the direction of 12P/Pons-Brooks (Fig 1, Fig 2). Issue is understood and closed after review.

Continuous Improvement

• Add "s" units to "Exposing Light (105.05 Left)" text drawn in ObsViewer/ObsPics. The CCD camera status field on ObsViewer is taken from the status that CCDSoft puts on it 'Camera' window and it doesn't show any time units, however it is preferrable that "s" (for seconds) is included in the field shown by AstroMain even if CCDSoft doesn't (e.g. "Exposing Light (105.05s Left).  The "s" can easily be included using a combination of InStr and Replace functions.
