Session Aims & Highlights (2023-12-01)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. Dome Slewing. Check Dome Slewing performance following issues in last session and after remedial fixes earlier in the day.
3. 12P/Pons-Brooks. Acquire images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks which has been undergoing an outburst.
4. UGCA and Herschel Objects. Acquire images of a number of UGCA and Herschel Targets in Cetus, Eridanus.

Highlights

• Targets. 41/46 planned targets observations were completed, with 1 other target partially completed. One target failed due to a flaw in the target's specification /cancelled due to cloud (but was acquired later as a ToO target.) 3 other targets missed there planned time slots as 3 ToO Targets were inserted into the night's observing queue at around 23:00.
•  Dome Slews. Dome slews worked perfectly following earlier remedial fixes.
• 12P/Pons-Brooks. Images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks were successfully acquired.
• UGCA and Herschel Objects. Images were acquired for a number of UGCA & Herschel Targets but had to be inserted as ToO targets.
•  Dome Parking.  Dome wasn't parked at correct physical Az at the end of session, lying at a physical Az 80.4° instead of the required physical Az 90.0°. Because of this the Dome didn't automatically begin re-charging, and had to be rotated to correct position and resynced to Park Az 90.

• Dome didn't park at correct phyiscal Az to allow shutter battery recharging to take place after the session. This is most likely due to the removal of anti-slip tape, drive wheel tension adjustment causing the previous Dome Calibration to no longer be valid.  Dome was recalibrated and repositioned at Az 90 whereupon battery would normally to commence. (due to other issues involving Dome Shutter its battery was recharged ahead of the S1172 session the following night (see Pulsar Dome - Shutter Software Reinstall (Shutter 1.25), 2023-12-02).

Small Defects

• Target 1 (NGC 4605) failed with no reason stated (17:19). Target was started 4 minutes ahead of plan and was successfully centered, and a focus profile taken. But after entering the job executor's imaging section it immediately finished and reported "Target Failed (Due to )" ie no reason was stated.   A clue in giving in the earlier Guiding Section which reported  "Guiding skipped   (Very short imaging (longest exposure 0s)) ". Checking the Target in AstroPlan, showed that the Target was missing a 'Use' tick against the intended and only frame set ('5 x 180s, 3x3, C ').  Resolved in-session by Ticking the FrameSet and submitting the target at a ToO target later in the session. A separate continuous ticket item is raised to review this case and decide what changes need to be made (e.g. warn user if saving or leaving a Target Form without an selected frame set, prevent such a target from being entered into the plan,  what reason should have been given, as Target was carried out as specified is 'Failed' correct,  probably)

• Greenhouse Multi-Sensor has become unreachable and is no longer providing temperature, humidity and pressure data (Greenhouse).  The 'Greenhouse'  Mult-Sensor added in Oct 2023 (see Greenhouse Temperature/Humidity Sensor 2023-10-10 was became unreachable earlier today and the Greenhouse Graphs show flat-lined data values since then. It is suspected that this may have happened because the sensor's 'Reset' button was accidentally pressed .   Resolved 2023-12-02 by deleting the orignal Greenhouse Sensor in Phoscon and re-adding the sensor as a new 'Greenhouse' Sensor.  Rest API requess show that Humidity, Temperature & Pressure have taken on the sensor ids 17.18 & 19 (instead of original ids 9,10 & 11). AstroMain 3.64.10 updated to use the new Sensor ID numbers, and uploaded to Observatory Computer. In general if a Sensors' Last Reached date is older than a certain interval the Sensor's State value should really be set to vcNull.

• Target Circle for BL Lac is slightly mispositioned. Propose to replay target but probably after first making the fix for 12P/Pons-Brooks circle position seen in last session (S1169) (Target ID 17, Images 1170065-68).  New Star Matching algorithm `added to AstroMain 3.65.4 and successfully tested against BL Lac dataset from the session.

• Compile Mosaic operation isn't putting frames in expected positions (post-session). Compile Mosaic operation using AstroImageTool isn't placing Mosaic Frames in expected co-joined positions.  Frames show unexpected offsets with gaps between left, central and right hand sections (See Fig 1)). Frames seem to have been aquired correctly. Checking a couple of frames confirms this and shows that a frame appearing on the right-hand side should really be positioned on the left hand side.  Checking "Tr37_S1170.xls" spreadsheet shows that it is handling & passing on frame coordinates ok and therefore the issue is associated with the input work file "Tr 37 (mosaic).dat" file which is generated by AstroMain's 'Analyse Mosaic Set' utility  (located on the Analysis/ImageSets/Mosaic tab).  Hypothesis is that the image frames have the Object Name 'Tr 37' which doesn't directly match with an object in TheSky6, and this means that the utility doesn't have a fixed Ra/Dec reference location and this confuses the processing.  Changing Object Name in ImageSets tab from 'Tr 37' to 'SAC Tr 37' before using Analyse Mosaic Set fixes issue for the first frame.  Investigating code for AnalyseMosaicSet(), shows that szTargetName is reset to Tr 37 for subsequent frames. Fixed in AstroMain 3.65.14 by setting szTargetName = Trim(LAlign(ObjectForMosaicAnalysis, 18)) during analysis of each frame not just the first (See Fig 2).  Issue wouldn't have arisen if correct SKY6NAME had been written to each FITS frame.  It is unclear why this doesn't occur.

Continuous Improvement

• Image from Point 6 of Mosaic Target TR37 looks particularly interesting on JPG Pictures. Look into this object and see if a dedicated longer exposure would be useful target. The feature is a nebula centered on GCVS V0390 Cep, and was imaged with 7 x 120s frames during the following S1171 Session (2023-12-02).

• Review case from session where NGC 4605 'failed' to acquire images due to bad target specification (17:19). Target was started 4 minutes ahead of plan and was successfully centered, and a focus profile taken. But after entering the job executor's imaging section it immediately finished and reported "Target Failed (Due to )" ie no reason was stated.   A clue in giving in the earlier Guiding Section which reported  "Guiding skipped   (Very short imaging (longest exposure 0s)) ". Checking the Target in AstroPlan, showed that the Target was missing a 'Use' tick against the intended and only frame set ('5 x 180s, 3x3, C ').  Look into the changes that need to be made to AstroPlan (e.g. warn user if saving or leaving a Target Form without an selected frame set, override 'use' setting and include 1st frame set. prevent such a target from being entered into the plan,  what reason should have been given, as Target was carried out as specified is 'Failed' correct,  probably.

• Should the number of JPG Target Pictures available on Website for current session be increased from current 50 images. Session acquired images from 45 targets one of which was a 3x3 mosaic which generated 9 images for website. Thus a total of 54 images. AstroMain/AstroPlan and the 'images_current.htm' page handles this ok as it wraps around to show the latest 50 images with the first 4 images dropping of the list. Is there benefit at all from increasing the number of handled images. Initial review indicates this is low priority ticket and should be place on-hold for the time being.
