Session Aims & Highlights (2024-02-12)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. 12P/Pons-Brooks. Acquire images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks which has been undergoing regular outbursts.

Highlights

• Targets. 17/28 planned targets observations was completed, with 9 other targets partially completed largely due to cloud or Camera issue.  2 planned targets failed due to cloud/session suspension or Camera issue. One additional ToO target (FU Ori) acquired to replace a target whose location was cloudy.
• 12P/Pons-Brooks. Only a single frame of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks were acquired
•  Dome Parking.  Dome parked ok at the correct position at end of the session.

Major Issues

• CCD Temperature Regulation not working for the final 33 image frames of the session (03:38). Images 1184162-94 had CCD Temperature of 8.4°C instead of an expected (regulated) CCD Temperature of -20°C. Images were reduced with a -5°C Dark Frame Set (highest tempearture set available to hand) which compromised final image quality.  Issue followed a problem with CCD Camera at 03:15 which saw an automated restart of CCDSoft/SBIG Camera in response at 03:16 (RestartCCDSoft() with RestartMode = RestartCCDSoftMode.UnSavedFileIssue) , followed up by a further automated restart of CCDSoft/SBIG Camera at 03:25.  The routine to restart CCDSoft/SBIG in mid session should automatically re-enable CCD Temperature regulation and use an appropriate set point temperature. Fixed in AstroMain 3.65.13 so that 'Connect Camera' is automatically called when Restarting CCDSoft during a Live Session provided that RestartCCDSoft reason isn't simply to SetSaveNo.

Minor Issues

• Unable to make session attempt due to low temperature reading (2024-02-11). Session attempt on proceeding night (2024-02-11) can be started due to perceived low temperature (-17.8°C).  Issue was due to Weather Station showing Outside Temperature/Humidity Sensor having flat battery and not producing any valid readings and a restart of Virtual Weather Station that saves weather records with Ch1 (Outside) Temperature of -17.8°C (based on 0.0°F).   Fixed by replacing 2xAAA batteries in Sensor and resetting weather station.  (2xAA batteries replaced in Wind Sensor at same time). Checks confirm that outside temperature / humidity and wind speed values are being recorded by Virtual Wether Station and transmitted onwards to Observatory Computer by AstroWeather program.   Session S1184 run ok on 2024-02-12.

• Session Autostart wouldn't begin with the stated reason 'due to software' (20:10). Autostart giving the message "Unable to begin AutoStart at 20:10 due to software". Restarting AstroMain program alone didn't resolve issue as it gave the similar message "Unable to begin AutoStart at 20:13 due to software". Log messages suggest an issue with the 'ScopeMonitor' thread with messages like "ScopeMonitor is Pending (27s)"   Resolved by restarting the entire Observatory Suite including TheSky6.  This time autostart successfully started "AutoStart Check Ok Conditions at 20:20 are suitable for starting an observing session". 10 minutes observing time were lost due to the problem.

• Taking CCD Image Failed (03:15). Locate Frame 1 (10s) for Target 20/29 MCG -1-33-30 w/SN2024byg) at 03:15 failed with command timed-out error & red alert at 03:16:39. In response CCDSoft was restarted at 03:16:39 in an 'attempt to fix unsaved file issue'.   This wasn't successful and  there were further image failures on Locate Frame 2 - 4 and the first 180s main frame.   A further automated restart of CCDSoft/SBIG Camera was made at 03:25:50, but the following four 180s frames were also repoted to have failed, with 'No connection' (Error code = 200) exception from Camera.TakeImage() between 03:26:29 & 03:26:32.   Only after a reporting of 'Reconnect Camera' operation by job executor at 03:26 did the CCD Camera imaging successful resume again for Target 21/29 (IC 1125 w/SN2024jz).  Issue closed as failure of CCDSoft/CCD Camera is a known occasional issue and it was eventually resolved by ObsOverseer & Job Executor but with a loss of around 11 minutes observing time including the MCG -1-33-30 target.  The cause of the delay is investigated under a separate ticket item (see below).

• Restart CCDSoft/SBIG Camera failed to resolve camera issue (03:16 & 03:25). Locate Frame 1 (10s) for Target 20/29 MCG -1-33-30 w/SN2024byg) at 03:15 failed with command timed-out error & red alert at 03:16:39. In response CCDSoft was restarted at 03:16:39 in an 'attempt to fix unsaved file issue'.   This wasn't successful and  there were further image failures on Locate Frame 2 - 4 and the first 180s main frame.   A further automated restart of CCDSoft/SBIG Camera was made at 03:25:50, but the following four 180s frames were also repoted to have failed, with 'No connection' (Error code = 200) exception from Camera.TakeImage() between 03:26:29 & 03:26:32.   Only after a reporting of 'Reconnect Camera' operation by job executor at 03:26 did the CCD Camera imaging successful resume again for Target 21/29 (IC 1125 w/SN2024jz).  Examining the logs indicates that operation to switch off SBIG Camera was anomalous.  The SBIG Power was reported by zigbee to have switched off at 03:16:46 (after on time > 7.0 hour) and then immediately reported by zigbee to have switched on at 03:16:46 (after an off time of 0s).   The planned restart SBIG Camera wasn't acted upon as the SBIG Camera was determined to be already on.   There was then a Zigbee message reporting that SBIG Power has switched off at 03:16:52 (after an on time of 6 sec).  This would explain the Image failures between 03:16 and 03:24 (the camera wasn't powered !) and explains why the Connect Camera operation at the end of first Restart attempt failed at 03:17 with the message "SBIG Driver: Device not found".  During the second Restart attempt at 03:25, the Stop SBIG Camera operation reported that the SBIG Camera was already off, confirming the previous assessment, and was then Restarted at 03:26 with Zigbee message SBIG Power has switched on at 03:26:02 (with off time of 9.2 min).   Whilst CCDSoft was Restarted, there seems to have been no 'Reconnect Camera' operation on the second attempt. This presumably didn't happen by design as the Camera was connected going into the Restart Attempt. Examining the Zigbee log file from the recent incident shows

  This confirms that there is an issue, and that seemingly anomalous event messages are being generated by the igbee Smart Plug for the SBIG Camera or by the Zigbee System itself.  A very similar issue occurred during a Session Attempt in Oct 2023 (S1156A, 2023-10-10).  Currently there is a 4s wait period between calling SwitchOffSbigPower()  and SwitchOnSbigPower(), however in this recent instance there was a 6s delay between sending PUT command to turn off the power plug and the 'final event message' confirming that camera power plug was off.   Fix attempted in AstroMain 3.65.13 by increasing the wait period from 4s to 12s.  If this proves non-effective additional work might comprise repeating SwitchOffSbigPower() & SwitchOnSbigPower() if there SBIG Camera Plug appears to not have responded in the correct/expected manner.

Small Defects

• ScopeMonitor logged as pending (21:31).  Log file records that ScopeMonitor is pending for periods up to 87s at 21:31:40 (during Target 2/28, M31), at 22:58:59 (during Target 9/29, 61P/Shajn-Schaldach), 03:15:40 (during Target 20/29, MCG -1-33-30), at 03:30:11, 03:33:06 & 03:34:42, 03:45:38 (during Target 21/29, IC 1125)   In each case TheSkyScope.Monitor has resumed messages where recorded after 60-87s.  There were no problems caused by the issue, but is worth noting that AutoStart failed to initially commence at start of session due to ScopeMonitor not being ready. Closed after review 2024-02-13, but continue to monitor.

• Sync Dome to Az 90.0° failed at end of session (06:36).  After determining best Park Position was at Az 90.6° by searching for Park sensor the dome was slewed to Az 90.6°. However slew to Best Park Az (90.6°) ended up at Az 90.7° (instead of 90.6°), and this caused the following 'Sync to Park Az' to fail with message as the "Dome (90.7°) is not at best Park Az (90.6°)".  Dome manually synced to Az 90.0 the following day.   Fixed in AstroMain 3.65.13  by permitting a 0.2° tolerance to prevent failure.
