Session Aims & Highlights (2024-03-21)

Main aims

1. 12P/Pons-Brooks. Acquire images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks which has been undergoing regular outbursts.
2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
3. AstroMain. Test new 3.66.6 (pre-3.67) version  of AstroMain in a live session, following mutliple changes in version 3.66.4, 3.66.5 & 3.66.6. Verify there are no significant sideeffects or issues with the new versions.

Highlights

• Targets. 1415  planned targets observations were completed, with the other 1 target partially completed
• 12P/Pons-Brooks. Images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks were successfully acquired.)
• AstroMain / SBIG Camera. There was one case with CcdCamera / SBIG Camera.but were resolved by AstroMain's Manager/Job Executor.

• CCDSoft Camera/SBIG Camera froze on 3 occasions whilst taking I filter frames employing ShortSubs. Whilst acquiring BVRI image sets for Target 14/15 (GCVS U Her), the CCDSoft Camera/SBIG Camera and/or AstroMain CCDCamera object reported to have frozen each time I (infrared) filter frames were attempted and CCDSoft & SBIG Camera were restarted.  In each case a 'CCDSoft' red alert was raised with the message "Image file [0000] hasn't been saved to disk, possible CCDSoft issue" . At 04:18:17,  2 minutes after the final [0000] case (04:16:21) there was also a 'SBIG Camera Alert' with message "Take Image failed (Command timed-out)" together with a 'CcdCamera' alert with the message "CcdCamera appears to be frozen (last cycle at 04:17:47) in section 'GetCameraProperties".  There were no issues during the acquistion of B, V & R  frames that were interspersed between the I filter frames, nor with any other14 targets during the session.  Whilst the I filter frames are shorter exposures than for other filters the most notable difference is that each I frame was planned as an average of 5 ShortSubs. The freezing up of the camera and the necessary CCDSoft/SBIG Camera restart has been seen in other recent sessions but this is the first time that a definate pattern exists which will hopefully give a better insight over what causes the problem and how to prevent their occurance or to workaround them better.   Bug identified in TakeImage() routine, when NumShortSubs > 1, take TakeImageAsync() is called without passing bImageTakenOk which makes it appears that a problem has occurred as bImageTakenOk is false.   Fixed in AstroMain 3.66.8.   This might not prevent all Camera related issues, but should prevent the issues with exposure frames that employ ShortSubs.

• Windows Update stuck on Downloading 0% on AllSky/Weather Computer  (2024-03-25).  Windows Update is stuck on Downloading 0% for 3 items (Window Malicious Software Removal Tool, Cummulative Update for Windows 10 22H2. Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2, and stayed in this state for more than 48 hours.   Resolved 2024-03-27.  Go to 'Services', Stop 'Windows Update', Delete contents of C:\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION , Go to 'Services', Restart 'Windows Update'.  Found that not files in Software Distribution could be deleted. Tried to Stop Windows Update from Admin,  but system said that it was unable to complete the action. Restarted Computer, Stopped Windows Update, but again couldn't delete all files in Software Distribution When back to Windows Update, which said last attempt had failed, and used the Try Again option. Download and install then proceeded ok.

• Majority of ObsCam pictures from the session were corrupted, with upside down annotation etc.  Resolved by restarting AstroObsCam, but what can the program to recognise the issue taking place and restart itself.  Issue began around S1031 2022-08-23 and is still occasionally seen, and still awaits a fix.

Small Defects

• When switching on SBIG Camera power , the 'Wait On SBIG Camera' message that follows is sometimes reported before the Zigbee Event is reported. Fixed in AstroMain 3.66.8, a 1s wait loop has been added after calling SwitchOnSbigPower() to allow the zigbee event to come through and be reported. .

• GCVS U Her was recorded as being a failed target, due to 'SBIG Camera', when it was in fact partially completed. Whilst an issue with CCDSoft/SBIG Camera freezing causing a failure to acquire I filter frames for GCVS U Her, BVR  frames were successfull acquired.   Therefore the target observation should have been recorded a 'Partially Completed' with 'SBIG Camera' being the reason for target's not beig completed..

• Logging records unexpectedly stopping showing target name, GCVS U Her (04:18:26). At 04:18:26.77 following a "The RPC server is unavailable" exception in TakeMainImage() routine, the next log record "Problem with Image.InventoryArray in GetImageInventory()" had an empty S1 field, the expected "GCVS U Her" was missing. The following 32 records up until start of next target were similarly affected.   It  would appear that the szTargetName was set to an empty string.  This most likely happened because a number of code section set szTargetName based on Object Name from Fits header and in event of exception szTargetName is set to a blank string, or is set to Fits_Object which may have been set to blank string because an exception occurred.   Propose to reset szTargetName = T.TargetName in the calling OB.Block, so that at least subsequent records use appropriate name, even if the immediate records have a blank S1 element. Fix implemented in AstroMain 3.67.

• An 'Unexpected Scope Movement' alert whilst Parking the Scope at end of the session (04:46).  During 'Session Closing' and after slewing the scope to the Near Park Position using an objScope.SlewToAltAzAsync call at  04:45:15.50 (with the slew finishing at 04:45:38) the Scope was parked via a call to 'objScope.Park' at 04:45:43. Shortly after the Park comand was sent an 'Unexpected Scope Movement' alert was raised at 04:45:59 with the message "Scope appears to be tracking even though Tracking=False". The log file has 'ScopeTrackingIsOff Alert' with tthis same message at 04:45:59.18.  During this period Telescope Tracking was turned Off at 04:43:38 (at Start of Closing operations), turned On at 04:45:15.34 (upon enter the 'Park' Routine) and then turned Off at 04:45:15.50 immediately before the SlewToAltAzAsync call. So scope was seemingly moving whilst Telescope Tracking was off.  But is this normal for the Park operation ?,  how does it compare with past sessions ?   Slew to Near Park position is performed by objScope.SlewToAltAzAsync provided that objScope.CanSlewAltAzAsync is True, which is the case for the LX200 (otherwise TheSky6.Telescope.SlewToAzAlt is used). Tracking needs to Off otherwise ASCOM.SlewToAzAltAsync() will fail (Note that in contrast TheSky6.Telescope.SlewToAzAlt() requires Tracking to be On).  Tracking didn't need to be turned On at  04:45:15.34. This was a call to Scope.EnsureTrackingOn() in the ParkScope2 routine, but there is also a Scope.EnsureTrackingOn() just before calling  to Scope.SlewTheSkyScopeToAzAlt().

• The 'Local Files' link on Session Notes pages is broken for older sessions.  After session folders were moved from ../ CCD Imaging/Analysis to new location '../CCD Imaging/Sessions'  the 'Local Files' links  om mutliple session notes pages became broken. Links need to be corrected with the correct path. . Some 248 files need to be changes (files from before c. 2023-04-16 or so). Updated files down to S890 so far.  This change will be superceded by a new improvement in progress that will insert "Local FIle >, Report File>, Log File>, Folder>" links to all Notes pages.

• AstroMain's new 'Rebuild All Log Pages' button routine doesn't create a Finalised Log file for Session Attempts.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.67 (2024-03-26) by including special handling in FinaliseLogFile() routine.

• AstroMain's new 'Finalise Session Log'  produces an htm with some records wrapping at hypens. Fixed in AstroMain 3.67 (2024-03-26) by using '<code style-"white-space: nowrap">'  for each section instead of a standard '<code>'.

• Nebulosity produced a corrupted Synthethic Flat Field Corrected Image for AT 2024dcg image from S1188 (post-session). Although combined image from CCDSoft opened ok in Nebulosity, applied synthetic flat field correction produced an image where 50% or 30% from left hand side of image was shifted across to right hand side. Recreating the combined image and redoing the operation didn't correct the problem. Nor did restarting Nebulosity.  The original uncorrected image had to be used instead.  This appears to be a data related glitch in Nebulosity, the problem doesn't occur for other images apart from this one for AT 2024dcg. Further tests should that the problem occurred with the first of two subframes (AT2024dcg.20240222.im1188131.120s.C.FIT) but not for second frame. 
  The header from first frame is used for combined image which explains why the Combined Image was also affected.

Continuous Improvement

• Introduce a new RecordFinishingProgression() routine to ObsManager and incorporate a log line break into RecordClosingProgression(). Small improvements to logging of Closing and Finishing stages.

• Finalise Session Log File at end of session and upload to website.  After adding a FinaliseLogFile() in AstroMain 3.68.8 fulfilling a continuous improvement ticket from S1150 (2023-09-28)  make further improvement to automatically finalise the log file at end of session (at a similar point to where Report File is finalised), upload it to website using AstroPlan, and to view view a link from Current/Latest Session Web Page.  Implemented in AstroMain 3.67 with additions to SetState_Finished() &  WriteLatestSessionLogs() routines, and in AstroPlan 1.39.13 (Web Upload)

• Make a number of improvements to Session LogFile to improve its appearance when viewed on line on IPad and particularly when viewed as htm page.  Problems occur with some lines and text wrapping around (particularly on IPAD which has more limited width display. It is also an opportunity to replace  °  by  ° (using  '&deg;' ).  Replace writelogfilerecord S3a  "TheSkyTelescopeCoords" by "TheSkyScopeCoords".

• Commence addition of  Report File, Report Log and _Log Folder links to Session Notes pages. Add addition links to Session Note page headers

• Add option to include/exclude trace records '(trace)' from finalised log file. Implemented in AstroMain 3.67 (2024-03-26) using 'Include (trace)'  checkbox on Reduction Workflow tab. Default option is unchecked, meaning that (trace) records are excluded from finalised log (htm) file.  This shortens the log (htm) file and makes it easier to use.  The '(trace)' messages can still be accessed by going to the original .log file or by rerunning the Finalise Log File with the 'Include (trace)' option checked.

• Provide a means in AstroMain/Analysis to quickly go back to reattempt Image Link.  Use new QueryDialog form to quicky go back to retry 'Link Image' without having to Cancel the 'FV'  Dialog and then re-click on Link Image.

• Add a 'Copy From CCDSoft' option to AstroMain's ImageSet 'Software Tool' QueryDialog.  Add a new option to exist QueryDialog (AnalysisStage.FV) that copies the current image picture from CCDSoft and pastes it into AstroMain ImageSets/Images as a linear image.  Prior to using option user will need to have set the range using CCDSoft Histogram tool.   Implemented in AstroMain 3.67 (2024-03-27), Imaged copied from CCDSoft using new routine 'ExecuteCCDSoftCopyImage()",  Image pasted into AstroMain using PasteImageFromClipboard().  In order to pickup the image from the clipboard it was found necessary to invoke the operation using following otherwise ObjImageFull is nothing which lead to an exception / paste failure.

• When a Target is opened in AstroPlan from AstroMan it should always open on the General tab. Currently when 'Open in AstroPlan' facility is used the target can open on History or Frames tab, and user has to manually go the General Tab. The target should be made to automatically open on the General tab regardless of what tab the form was previously showing.  Implemented in AstroPlan 1.39.14
