Type LBV Transients

This page documents observations and images of LBV Transients (Luminous Blue Variables), 2020-2021

LBV's are massive unstable supergiant stare, also known as S Doradus variables
P Cygni is an example of LBV from our own galaxy

LBV 2000ch in NGC 3432
LBV 2000ch is a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) in the galaxy NGC 3432, about 30 million light-years from Earth.

2000ch was discovered 2000-05-03.20 (May 2000), when it was found by the LOSS survey at magnitude +17.4.
 ( Rochester Supernova site |  2000ch subpage | Original LOSS Discovery Image (2000)K. Itagaki image (2019) )

Initially thought to be a nova in our own galaxy, it was reclassified as a subluminous type IIn supernova when its
true distance was determined. Unexpectedly, it reappeared in 2013, showing that 2000ch is not a supernova
but most probably an Eta Carinae type star that is undergoing a series of outbursts.
Further outbursts occured in April 2014, January 2017 and February 2018.
It was found again in outburst on 2019-02-24.50 by K. Itagaki  at magnitude +17.9.

LBV 2000ch is show in images below (2019-02-26.89 ) by the black cross-hairs.
