Session Aims & Highlights (2019-09-15)

Main aims

1. Software Testing: Test new fixes to AstroMain and AstroAllSky programs
2. C/2019 Q4 (Borisov) . Image the new comet C/2019 Q4 (Borisov)
3. Mixed Target - Image a selection of targets, but maintly 1Variable Stars and Nearby Star Targets due to nera full moon
4. Software & Systems  - Check stability of software and presence of any side effects following ongoing enhancements to AstroMain and associated support programs.

Highlights

• Live Feed of session information to the Observatory's website worked well, including Annotated AllSky Images that were immediately updated on the web after each change in scope position/target
• Automatic Session Extension finally worked as design, after its failure in the last session.

Lowlights

• Primary target for the night, C/2019 Q4 (Borisov), wasn't imaged

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (AstroWeather 1.7.8) Cloudy for most of night with skies potentially clearing at 03:00,  low probability of any significant rain (As it turned out the evolving forecast through the late evening extended the cloud further and further through the night, and indeed it was cloudy for the the whole night, only clearing at around 06:30 after the sun has risen. A few spots of rain occurred at around 00:45 and 02:40)

• Obs. Manager failed to recognise that high cloud had developed and that conditions were unsuitable for continuing to acquire targets.
  This is a known issue that occasionally occurs when the sky clarity reading is moderate to marginal, but AllSky Stars count drops significantly and locate frames are failing to link. (cross ref with previous mention) .   Code modified : AllSky Stars Count used to soft suspend session when Stars Count drops below 20. and the option 'Suspend if stars<20' is checked.

• Unable to initially find and then import into TheSky6 the orbital elements for new comet C/2019 Q4 (Borisov). The main issue seemed to be that the comets very high Eccentricity value of 2.89204 causes it to be rejected by TheSky6's import routine, as the comet is unlike all normal comets from our solar system which have e of between 0 and 1.5.  Eventually used the workaround of modifying the e value in the .cmt file from 2.89 to 0.89204 to allow the comet to be imported and then edit the e value in TheSky6 back to 2.89204.  As far as I could tell TheSky6 calculated the correct position for the comet based on ephermides for comet on the comets MPC page
  Elements eventually found and workaround found to import comet's orbital elements into TheSky6.
   
• Schedule Builder didn't include C/2019 Q4 (Borisov) into V5 Plan even though target was marked as a 'Must Include Target' .  Target was valid (type: Monitor, Status:To Be Observed, Sky Constraint: C3  (ie no critical limit)), marked as 'Must Include' and at the start time of the V5 plan the comet was at altitude 16.3 and climbing.  During earlier plan V2 -V4 the target wasn't risen and this can explain why these plans didn't comtain the target. Investigating Schedule Builder code shows that although the AstroPlan program allows a Target to marked as 'Must Include' and stored in the database, the flag is not currently used during Schedule Building.
    Fixed 2019-09-16 (AstroPlan 1.10.2). Builder modified to use Must-Include flag to prioritise targets during schedule building.

Continuous Improvement

• Move 'Targets Database' checkbox from bottom of 'Load from Observatory' tabs to the top. This is to allow any work in AstroPlan/Database to happen whilst the New/Analysis folders are slowly download. This is to allow a slight efficiency gain where a large number of FITs images have been acquired.

• Check whether repositioned target names that show on Observing Results Chart are correctly displayed on the Observing Plan chart. . Two targets (RX And and 61 Cyg) are repositioned on Observing Session chart for S694 , but are not repositioned on Observing Plan Chart  Did the names faili to plot or did the names not need to be repositioned
  Done 2019-09-16.  The target names are repositioning on Observing Results chart as there was insufficient room to position them.
   
• Allow an option of building an Observing Plan at a specific start time.  For live observing building a plan a specific sun altitude or building a plan from Now provide the functionality required.  However for a testing and diagnosis of a particular issue I need to wanted to replicate the problem by building a plan based a specifiic start time and found that there is no way of doing this at present.
  Done 2019-09-16 (AstroPlan 1.10.2). Schedule Builder Form extended so that user can elect to use a specific time given by new fields 'txtUserStartTime' & 'checkboxStartTimeFromUser'
