Session Aims & Highlights (2020-11-27)

Main aims -

1. Refocus Main Scope.  Move LX200 main mirror so that scope is at focus at around the middle of TCF-S focuser range
   ( i.e. at a position of around 3500-4000,  focuser range of 0 - 7000)
    (problems encountered in prior session (S833) where best focus was as low as 150 and profiles were being clipped)
2. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets and deep sky targets as allowed by bright moonlight conditions.
3. Bug Fixes. Check that bug fixes made since last session haven't upset the program operation and are working where appropriate.

Dome position adjusted and resynced from 91.1 to 90.0 deg to achieve final park.

Highlights

• Targets.  30/43 targets were completed with 5 other targets partially completed.
• Telescope Refocusing.  Telescope main mirror moved allowing the TCF-S foucser (0-7000 range) to be at focus at 3930 instead of prior positon at 739.

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (API data from darksky.net) Pre-Session Weather forecast showed cloudy skies throughout the first part of the night (cloud cover 90-100%) but clearing slightly from 01:00 onwards (cloud cover 22-68%) with calm conditions (wind 4-7 mph), Minimum temperature 2 degC. In the event there was a clear spell from 18:00 to 20:40 with a more prolonged clear spell from 23:20 to 04:40 and a further clear spell at 06:30 till dawn. Temperatures fell below 0 degC at 01:00 reaching a minimum of -1.5 degC.  Winds were calm to very light.

• An unnecessary delay of 4s is being added prior each Focus Frame. A delay of 4s is being applied before each focus frame. For a profile with 14 points this corresponds to an extra 56s of wasted time. This is nearly an extra minute ! (or more than a minute if any points needed to be repeated). Examining the code show the addition of an extra 4s isn't formally set,  the TakeFocusImage() routine uses whatever is set in Camera Properties.   Changing it to 0 whilst image is being taken doesn't work as the routine records the delay setting before taking the focus frame and reapplies the saved setting once the focus frame is completed.    Code changed to explicitly set Camera.Delay to 0s prior to taking Focus Frames.

• Final 3 frames of Target 1/43 (61 Cyg) , 7 x 2s, R were cancelled to prevent the target from overruning its time slot.  Whilst this is as per current design, and is absolutely required when taking say 5 x 180s C frames, where delaying 3 x 180s (9 minutes) can not possibly be allowed,  a delay of 3 x 2s (ie 6s or  18s including 2x2 binned image download time) should probably be allowed in order to get the target completed. What is the appropriate cutoff ?   Code changed so that cancellation only happens for exposures >5s.

• Foc2 Wide Search Profile was plotted ok or was partially overwritten.  Profile 2 (Wide) explored the focus range 8370 to 9120 and found best focus at 8770,  however the graph (FocusProfile.20201127.profile02_wide.gif) shows a Foc1 style range (1500 to 6000)  with data points from 8370-9120 plotted off to one side of the graph. the data table to right of graph looks normal. The corresponding graph on website (Session.Foc2Profile2.gif) is correct and displays the range 8250 to 9150, suggesting that the graph has somehow become overwritten when starting Foc1  Profile 3 (Wide). This also used a 1500 to 6000 x-axis range confirming the diagnosis. Fix attempted by placing FP.Number = gProfileNo + 1  before the call to objConsole.SetUpFocusProfile() routine.

Continuous Improvement 

• Check if GRB Alert at 06:29 (2020-11-28) could have been reacted to. At 06:29 a GCN/Swift Notice was received by AstroVOE (1.5)  for a GRB in Bootes at a suitable sky position (Az 99/Alt 37.7), and with a suitable sky darkness (SunAlt -13.6) and suitablly small positional error (0.1 deg). AstroVOE rejected the alert on the basis that the 'Observatory isn't operating in automated mode and can't react.'  Checking logs shows that the Observatory was under Automated control at this time, taking Image 7/9  for Target 43/43 (UGCA 220). Whilst this was the last target in the plan there is no reason why the observatory couldn't have reacted. Why did AstroVOE think that the observatory wasn't operating in automated mode ?   Observatory is currently on GMT time - so no difference between local time and UT time.  Should the GRB have been saved to Database and ToO issued for immediate reaction, it would have been interesting to see how the observatory would have reacted with it being that lat target in the plan and close to the Plan's End Time (would the GRB observation been allowed to finish or would it have been cut short ?)
  Although a SoftSuspend had called at 06:20:18, it was lifted at 06:22:54, so Observatory was operating in normal Running mode. The observatory didn't enter into a closing state until 06:37.  AstroVOE code show that the above rejection message would only have been given if ObsStatus.ObservatoryMode <> ObsMode.FullyAutomated, and this is read from an intermediary file (ObsStatus.dat) every 6s or so. Whilst session was started using AutoStart, mode would have switched to FullyAutomated and then remained in this state till session was ended at 06:41.  The Swift GRB Alert was followed by Fermi GRB Alerts at 06:29:40 and 06:29:49 but these failed due to un-useable positional errors (31.6-33.5deg). As they arrived some 40s later they are not factors in the failure to react to the Swift Alert.  Apart from the AstroMain logs there is no records are kept to show the status of the ObsStatus.dat file. The same file is also accessed by AstroGuard and obviously AstroMain when it writes the file.  In the event of a momentary issue reading the ObsStatus.dat file, AstroMain will catch the exception and set ObsStatus.ObservatoryMode to ObsMode.Undefined, but the time of such exceptions are not logged.   Later review at 2020-12-05 showed that some 59 exceptions had occurred during the past 6-7 day period,   indicating that 1) an exception is the most probably reason why the observatory was deemed to not be operating in automated at time of 06:29 GRB alert when it was in fact operating. 2) number of exceptions isn't overly excessive and the particular fix that has been implemented shouldn't allow a rare exception from blocking a obsrevatory response to a GRB alert.
