Session Aims & Highlights (2021-09-21)

Main aims

1. Comet 69/P. Acquire images of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (passing through Taurus)
2. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
3. AstroMain. Test fixes, improvements and new features in AstroMain 3.42.5.

Highlights

• Comet 69/P.  Images of  67P Churyumov-Gerasimenkoseparate successfully acquired
• Targets.  Images from a total of x targets were acquired through the session.   Sky clear, but moon light and only moderate seeing
• Target with Calibration Stars.  Scheduling of RR Lyr with before and after calibration using Vega worked as per design and spectra images of both the target star and Vega were successfully acquired.
• AstroMain.  SAstroMain observatory control worked well and their were software or hardware glitches at all. 100% operational success.
•  Seeing  Seeing was only moderate and sometimes rather poor

• Running Focus Profile on Vega failed to produce a valid profile / focus measurement.  Profile taken with 0.2s focus frame exposures. Bloomed star causes very high FWHM values (35-40") which don't respond significantly with changing focuser position.   Focus Locate frame uses the standard 3s exposure for Vega. This is much too long and the image shows severe blooming and causes a slight error in the position of the brightest star object.    The 0.2s focus frame exposures are also too long. RunAutoPickFocusStar() hard coded to use the minimum SBIG ST-10 exposure of 0.11s focus.  Because of Vega's extreme brightness it might simply not be possible to take non-saturated focus frames.   Prehaps Vega should be 'black-listed from focusing attempts ?   Even a 0.3s S (spectra) filter is saturated across the first order spectra.   AstroMain 3.42.6 code modified so that Vega is hard coded to limit exposures to 0.11s exposure when using S Filter.  Vega 'calibration target' changed to using 0.11s exposure.

• 3s Focus Locate Frame exposures for Vega show severe blooming.  Focus Locate frame uses the standard 3s exposure for Vega. This is much too long and the image shows severe blooming and causes a slight error in the position of the brightest star object.  Resolved by changing the RunAutoPickFocusStar()  routine to call a new routine (GetBrightStarExposureTime() ) to look up the magnitude of the target star in TheSky6 and use that magnitude to select and return a shorter exposure if the target star is particularly bright, but otherwise return the provided default exposure).    CentreTarget  routine with BrightStar Locate has been changed to use the same routine.

• Problem runnning 'Process All' reduction operation when there raw sets include one or more sets without Dark Frames .  Process All routine (ReduceAllFolders()) is meant to skip images sets which don't have a Master Dark or Master Flat frame. This sort of happens (message "Master Dark is missing" appears) , but there is a recently introduced bug which either causes key strokes to nevertheless still be sent across of CCDSoft and moves files unexpectedly which causes it to open folders that it shouldn't and otherwise corrrupts/ destabilises the Reduction process , requiring user to abort process.  Fixed 2021-09-22.

• Group Guide Stats data for Targets having very short exposure times.  For example HIP 87937 (15 x 2s C), should have data grouped into a single 30s 'group' .  With grouping the guide history plot suffers overposting issues and has Guide plots with only 2 points each.  Implemented by need to monitor to see that results are as expected or if there are any undesirable sideeffects

• Hide FIT Images from view when running VMA until they are found to be within scope (ie of the right vma type and are of a known star field / object). This is to avoid 'images' flashing when running the respective vma routine (vma2, vma3 etc)

• Correct specification of 61 Cyg target so that blue target circle in JPG pictures appears over the current position of the double star rather than the 61 Cyg catalog position (which doesn't have Proper motion applied).  Fixed by using TheSky6Name HIP 104214 (which has proper motion data). EV Lac (GJ 873) also fixed in similar way by using TheSky6Name  HIP 112460.

• Provide a new 'process' button for  Excel Fits Summary files, that allows user to step through the typical post-session admin.  Button name to change dependant on next relevant action. Spreadsheet to keep a record of where admin has reached, in case the .xls file is reopened after being closed.

• Ra/Dec positions of Non-Sidereal Targets (Comets, Asteroids) aren't always re-calculated for the most relevant time.  As part of AstroPlan's Schedule Building process. the GetActiveTargetSet() routine recalculates the RA/Dec position of non-sidereal targets. This is done for just a single time point with the assumption that the position is sufficiently accurate for the purposes of creating the night's observing plan. ( Note: Ra/Dec positions are however recalculated more accurately for actual observing time and checked against telescope constraints by AstroMain's Job Executor prior to slewing the scope.  There is too much computing overhead to recalculate the position for each and every GA potential plan, as it requires calling TheSky6 each time).  The current timepoint used is the time when the plan is built. This is normally done just before the plan is used.  This could lead to a invalid positions if plan is being built for some future night, and arguably isn't the best time point to use for the night (even when being built directly before observing).    It is proposed to move the call to GetActiveTargetSet() into the code section where the TheSky6 is set to the middle of the night. This section is used to get the angular separation between target and the moon.

• Update the display of intermediate (Gen) Plan Charts in AstroPlan in order to show correct element types.  Element Type (MI, CalA, CalB, ToF etc) is a new parameter that has been added to the plan_observation and observation tables.   Plotting of Gen Plan Charts  needs to be update in order to display element typses corresctly.  Fixed by modifying the InsertObservationIntoPlan() routine to set Observation ElementType

• Modify AzAltPlan Chart to show calibration targets.  Before/After Calibration Fields are a new feature in 1.23.2,  whereby a Target can be selected to 'CollectCalibration' data and the relevant calibration 'targets' are then inserted into the Plan before and/or after the primary target. At present these calibration targets don't appear on the Az/Alt Chart.   SaveFinalPlan() routine to be updated to include these calibration 'targets'.

• Modify reporting of vcNull and other 'null' values when reporting focus profile results.  Focus profile for Vega was unusual in completing the profile, but no valid points where achieved.  Profile was trying to focus blooming streak and couldn't get elongation values below 3 or FWHM to reduce below 35" . Profile result littered with vcNull values etc or blank data (eg airmass).  Reporting to be improved.   Vega has been hard-coded to skip focusing in AstroMain 3.42.7 because the star is simply too bright to give a reliable automated best focus position due to blooming.
