Session Aims & Highlights (2021-10-24)

Main aims

1. AstroMain. Check on fixes and new features added to AstroMain 3.45, including new Session.ObservationUid handling and automated remote control of ObsCam (switching off ObsCam and its IR Led Lights during imaging to prevent stray light reaching the SBIG CCD Camera attached to main scope)
2. AstroObsCam.  Perform live test of AstroObsCam 1.6.6
3. AstroAllSky. Perform a live test of AstroAllSky 3.12.6 with new TP2 handing
4. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
5. Guiding Performance. Make further guiding runs with the recently installed new Dec Motor Unit

Highlights

•  C/2021 A1 (Leonard).  Images of C/2021 A1 (Leonard) acquired, through quality was poor due to poor sky conditions
•  AstroMain/AstroObsCam.   Live tests of AstroMain 3.45 and AstroObsCam 1.6.6 were successful and prove that ObsCam camera operating on AllSky/Weather computer could be turned off by AstroMain operating on the Observatory Computer in order to turn off the webcam's IR led lights to prevent stray light reaching the SBIG CCD camera during target imaging.
    
•  Targets.   Quite a few targets were imaged during the session.
   
•  AstroAllSky.   AstroAllSky 3.12.6 like the previous 3.12.5 session had serious issue and had to be rolled back to 3.12.4 shortly after starting session.
   Guiding Performance.   Guiding results/charts showed that guiding performance for targets lying west of Meridian hadn't been improved by installation of new Dec Motor unit. This is disappointing, partly because of the money invested in the new Dec motor, and because the guiding problem still persists.

Notes:

RainTrim had to be used to take out rain values of 0.5-1.0 that were left over following a rain event some 12 hour beforehand.

• CCD Dessicator plug not re-installed back into SBIG Camera prior to session.  Due to an oversight the CCD Dessicator Plug which was renewed in oven yesterday (2021-10-23) wasn't replaced into SBIG Camera prior to the start of the session. Fortunately its didn't stop session from proceeding or hinder the quality of images.  Dessicator plug installed the following day

• New AstroAllSky version 3.12.6 suffering from serious issue.  AstroAllSky 3.12.6 like the previous 3.12.5 session had a serious issue and had to be rolled back to 3.12.4 shortly after starting session.  Issues in 3.12.6 :  i) failing to parse TP2 record (Exception in Parse TP2 Data Record, Setting TP2.valid = false) , ii) failing to display Scope/Next Targets on annotated AllSky Image and failing to send Sky/Cloud & SkyDiff Stats to AstroMain.  Resolved in-session by quickly rolling back to 3.12.4 which is known to be working ok.

• AstroMain reporting Dome Records not updating.   Examining ASCOM Log folders shows that Pulsar Dome is using ASCOM.Pulsar_Observatories_Dome.2222.074740.txt in Logs 2021-10-22 folder.  It is hypothosised  that AstroMain isn't searching far enough back to find the last file). It is suprising that Pulsar Dome driver hasn't opened up a new file, prehaps DeviceHub has been open with continuous connection to Dome ?   The GetLatestPulsarLogFile() routine was only searching the two most recent Log Folders but has now been updated to search all folder is guarenteed to always find the latest Pulsar Log File.

• The rain forecast for next 15mins including Nearest Storm distance isn't getting served to AstroMain program and the Current Weather Page not showing rain radar data from DarkSky.Net.   DarkSky.net API has been used by AstroWeather for the past 2 or 3 years to serve a shorterm rain forecast to AstroMain for automated observatory protection, but it appears to have stopped sending valid minutely data in the last few days. Unclear if this represents a temporary outage or sign that DarkSky net is finally ramping down its API support which is due to finish totally in 2022 in any case. Need to shift over to an alternative data source.  Work had started on exploring OpenWeather's One Call API when DarkSky.Net's data stream came back online on 2021-10-26. It is decided to close issue this is a minor issue, but open a continuous improvement ticket to make a replacement be available for when DarkSky.Net finally goes totally offline.
   Resolved in short-term  2021-10-26 (DarkSky.Net / AstroWeather)

Small Defects

• New AstroAllSky version 3.12.6 failing to send back Sky/Cloud information or fresh SkyDiffs values to AstroMain.  Trace lines and exception exception tracing added to 3.12.17 (2021-10-25) to help understand what the issue is.

• SkyQualityChart nStars and Clarity curves starting from zero each time AstroMain is restarted.  Values should be set to vcNull when Synposis and CloudSensor services start. Fix attempted in AstroMain 1.45.1 but it hasn't solved the issue.    Problem with nStars at 20:04 in session S928 (2021-10-25) identified to correspond to the closing and restart of AstroAllSky.

• BL Lac Guiding Chart unexpectedly includes a (blank) Frame 0 graph when it should only have Frame 1 to 3 graphs. The issue also occurred with BL Lac during the previous S926 session, but not with other target guide runs.

• New AstroAllSky version 3.12.6 failing to parse TP2 record (Exception in Parse TP2 Data Record, Setting TP2.valid = false).  Whilst this fixes the exception issue and fixes the issue that scope/next targets weren't plotting on annotated AllSky image, it doesn't resolve the issue that sky.cloud data isn't returned to AstroMain and doesn't send fresh DiffStats data to AstroMain.   (AstroMain's Sky Quality Chart flat lines !)
   Fixed (AstroAllSky 3.12.6.build2)

Continuous Improvement

• Change log & report file names for AstroAllSky to include the text 'AllSky'.

ObservationUid added to filenames using the code ' + ".oid" + ObservationUidStr()

• Create a new 'Parked (disconnected)' scope state and pass Park Az, Park Alt to AstroObsCam. When scope is known to be parked by AstroMain, it should be able able to inform AstroAllSky/AstroObsCam so that 'Az 180.0, Alt 3.0'  can be posted on ObsCam pictures and on the AstroObsCam console instead of 'Az - '.   .ScopeAz and .ScopeAlt passed to AstroObsCam via TCP/IP messaging.   (code :  f TP2.ScopeState = 1 And TP2.ScopeAz <> vcNull ).   AstroObsCam 1.7.1 modified to display Az/Alt values whenever they are supplied by TCP messaging from AstroMain.  AstroMain 1.45.2  modified to send Az 180, Alt 3 whenever the scope is disconnected.   Future modification of AstroMain required to know when scope is disconnected from Park Position and can reasonably send park coords (Az 180/Alt 3) and when the scope is disconnected when not at Park Position and should send Az vcNull / Alt vcNull.  This needs to a state that can be recovered following a session change or an AstroMain program restart.  Options for doing this reviewed.   SU.TeleParked added to AstroMain 1.45.2 to record Park Status when disconnected.  AstroMain nows sends SU.TeleParkAzimuth & SU.TeleParkAltitude when Parked (values taken from Settings rather than earlier hardcoded values).

• Modify AstroWeather so that it can at push of button switch over to using Weather Forecasts from OpenWeather. The outage proved to be just temporary as minutely rain forecast began again on 2021-10-26.  Since DarkSky net will eventually switch off  its API support (due to finish totally in 2022) AstroWeather needs to shift over to an alternative data source.  An account has been opened with OpenWeather allowing up to 1000 free API calls per day that can get most but not all of the parameters offered by DarkSky.net.    Documentation for One Call API is here : https://openweathermap.org/api/one-call-api
  Need to switch AstroWeather to using the new API.   Prototype built into AstroWeather 1.14 (2021-10-25) which builds & sends appopriate request to api.openweathermap.org and receives the response.   Implemented into AstroWeather 1.14 (2021-10-28), with radio button selection of data source(DarkSky or OpenWeather) on Settings tab.  Current Limitation : Weather icons are not yet shown.  These were subsequently added also on 2021-10-28.  Weather Chart modified to show data source (DarkSky or OpenWeather) in top right corner.

• Add Session.ObservationUid handling to AstroMain's Local JPG Page (Stage 2c). Stage 2c of this larger project is to add ObservationUid integration to Build Local Jpg Page.  This is to provide direct connectivity between TargetInfo, JPg Picture, Spectra Pictures, Focus Profile, Guiding Charts, AllSky Picture.  A date cutoff (2021-10-26) is to be defined and used so that re-build of local jpg pages for historic sessions can use old BuildLocalJpgPage or new BuildLocalJpgPage as appropriate.  Changed TargetInfo file names to use TargetDisplayName instead of TargetName.  New routines ExtractOid(),  ExtractNameFromTargetFileName(),  BuildJpgPicturePageNew().
   Done 2021-10-29  (AstroMain 1.45.3)
   
• Add new GuideStats measures (% inside +/- 1 arc sec, Ra, Dec). Create two new GuideStats measures to show % of time with +/- 1 arc sec of Locked RA and Locked Dec position. Implemented first in AstroMain 3.46.3 (2021-11-14) but a bug meant that it wasn't reporting correct result. Fixed in AstroMain 3.46.4 (2021-11-15).
