Session Aims & Highlights (2022-11-23)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. AstroMain.  Check new AstroMain version (3.58.1) for any issues introduced by several recent changes, bug fixes and additions.

Highlights

• Targets. 11 out of 32 planned were fully completed, with a further 6 targets being partially completed. First part of the night was affected by cloud causing session suspensions and by software problems that prevented the session from resuming even though sky had cleared.
• AstroMain. AstroMain 3.58.1 had two major issues that affected operations : 1). Tracking not stopping after session suspended for 15 min and 2) Unable to resume from Suspended State even though sky had cleared.  These were due to the same underlying bug. Although bug was present in AstroMain 3.58.0 used during the successful S1059 session (2022-11-20), the bug was not exposed as that sessions never entered the Suspended Session state.  Issues fixed in 3.58.2 which was installed and used from 01:16 onwards.
• Dome Slews.  No holdups occurred this session (holdup stats : 0/21 slews, 0%,  0.0 min lost)

Notes:

• 3 interventions made (22:39, 23:02 & 00:07) to release session from Suspended State, in which it had become stuck due to a bug in the Suspended Session section of the ObsManager code.  Whilst intervention (Job Abort followed by reset to FullAutomated or AutoStart) managed to get the session going again each time, further cloud caused the sesssion to again become suspended.
   
• Session restarted at 01:16 in order to use AstroMain 3.58.2 with fixes 2 major issues seen during first half of the session

Major Issues

• Telescope tracking wasn't turning off after being suspended for 15 minutes. Design calls for telescope tracking to be turned off 15 min after session is suspended.  This was happening in earlier versions.  Bug found and fixed ( 'if StartingStageNo = 3 then'  is wrong & was changed to 'if SuspendedStageNo= 3 then').

• Session isn't resuming from Suspended State even though weather conditions are ok. The fact that session isn't resuming and telescope tracking isn't turning off after 15 mins suggests an issue with the ObsManager Suspended Section code. Changes occurred to this code in AstroMain 3.58, and it seems a bug was introduced.

Small Defects

• Text label for Near Zenith focus point ("Focus Field 1") not added to new AzAlt Result Chart.   A fix was made in AstroMain 3.58.1 to draw Near Zenith Focus Field Az/Alt on AzAlt Results chart.  Whilst the Az/Alt point is believed to be drawn and the is added as point 1 in legend the name of the Focus Field 2 isn't drawn

• AstroMain's 'Report Zigbee Network' routine is still reporting an incorrect 'Last Seen' time for the MoesGo Remote Control. Remote Control last seen was reported as 8,676.1 hour at 19:36 and as 5889.8 hour at 22:50. Although this was an issue in AstroMain 3.58.1 beta a fix was attempted and even though it wasn't clear was clear why the issue was occuring it was believed that forcing QueryAllDevice(True) seems to have solved the issue. Tracing to be added to try to resolve was is causing the issue.

• Targets that failed/cancelled due to cloud/too few starts aren't plotting at appropriate positions on the AzAlt Results chart.  The failed/cancelled targets ar eall plotting at the same position that are neither the Az/Alt position of the target or the scope (tracking was still on throughout this time. It seems the coordinates correspond with the gTargetAz, gTargetAlt position that is was last set as (which was for Focus Field).

• Targets that failed/cancelled due to cloud/too few starts are plotting as red filled circles rather than open circles (for missed or cancelled targets)

• Unexpected Shutter Sensor Change (02:13).  At 02:13:21 the HandleSensorEvents reported two events
    Observatory Shutter has closed(02:13:21, open time 50.5 min)

  Zigbee log shows following notifications for ShutterSensor (id=2)

  01:22 was the time that the Shutter was opened and the Zigbee event at 01:22:48 is consistent with this.  The first notification at 02:13:21 doesn't have an .Open field and it is presumed that during parsing of the event.  ".Open" took on the default value (False) which made it seem that Open Status had gone from True to False (but fortunately quickly corrected by the next notification line  which has 'open'=true). Without a 'Open' field the first notification at 02:13:21 should have ellicted the response "No change in ShutterSensor state from previous". Code needs to be fixed.

• JobExecuter made attempt to autofocus on Mars (01:58). Job Executor made attempt to perform an autofocus operation for Target 20/32 (Mars). Mars is too bright for conventional autofocus technique to work. JobExecutor should automatically not attempt to autofocus on Mars (as per Jupiter).  Automated operations will use the current best focus position offset serived from the most recent  successful autofocus star operation.

• Pulsar Driver Flag in AstroMain's ObsViewer picture is Salmon rather than Red. Changed from Salmon to Red in ObsViewers DrawObservatoryPicture() routine and in Dome Monitorss RunPulsarDomeMonitor() routine when setting VM.flagPulsarDomeService.

• User action to stop telescope tracking was incorrectly logged (22:11). User action at 22:11:43 was incorrectly logged at "user request to resume telescope tracking". The report message 'Stop Tracking..'  seems overly brief and incomplete.  Eventually fixed in AstroMain 3.59.

• Space weather picture 'planetary-k-index' not available / not captured.  On at least 2022-11-21 and today 2022-11-24 the Estimated 3 hour Planetary K-Index graphic from (NOAA) hasn't been not available on the Observatory's Aurora Watch page (http://www.astro-richweb.net/astro/allsky_aurora_watch.htm#Planetary_K-Index). The file ( http://services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/planetary-k-index.gif ) may not be available because the NOAA server is down or the file URL has been changed ? . Image failed to be captured for documentation on recent Aurora event (see Aurora 2022-11-20/2022-11-21).  Investigating shows that the previous file is no longer present/updated and has been replaced by a web app at https://swpc-drupal.woc.noaa.gov/products/planetary-k-index that produces a chart in the web browser using "HighCharts". The chart can be manually downloaded, but it requires user input.   The chart JSON is available at https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/products/noaa-planetary-k-index.json and in theory data could be routinely downloaded and a chart made by script.  A lot of extra work.  GFZ, German Research Centre for Geosciences in Postdam present a day based KP graph at https://kp.gfz-potsdam.de/fileadmin/kp-archiv/png/2022-11-24.png  whose link could be built by script.  but it's not such a useful graph as original KP graph from NOAA. Issue identified and understood.  Ticket will be updated with proposed solution in due course. Reviewing the source repository shows that nearest equivalent is download 'station-k-index.png'.   AstroAllSky's settings updated 2023-10-04 to access station-k-index.png instead of planetary-k-index.gif. Tested to be working during night sesion S1154 2023-10-04. Aurora Watch page also updated to display the new picture link.
  Done 2023-10-04 (AstroAllSky 3.19.3).

• Consider adding Clarity and Stars to AstroMains Observatory Tab.  Add Clarity to the Cloud Sensor row. Add Num. of Stars to ScoreCard row. After review decided that it is inappropriate to put these fields on the Observatory Tab. The data is available on Manager Tab and in ObsViewer.
