Session Aims & Highlights (2022-12-15)

Main aims

1. Booked Observation. Make second live test of Booked Observations / Time Lapse recording by taking a 2.1/2 hour observation of Jupiter starting at 19:00 UT and covering the transit of Ganymede. This objective was aiming to collect a long series timelapse data for testing recents additions to AstroMain's Post Session processing and analysis workflow.
2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
3. 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann. Acquire further images of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, as followup to images taken in previous sessions (S1061 - S1070) . Continue to look out for expanding coma following 4 mag outburst on Nov 22nd 2022.
4. AstroMain.  Check new AstroMain version (3.59.6) for any issues introduced by recent changes, bug fixes and additions.

Highlights

• Targets. 30 out of 33 planned targets were completed, with 2 further targets partially completed.  One target missed its planned time slot, by the introduction of 3 ToO targets (Jupiter, Uranus & 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann)
• 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann.  Two sets of images were acquired
• AstroMain. No significant issues with AstroMain 3.59.6
• Dome Slews.  Dome slewing performance was fairly good considering the issues the previous day where the dome couldn't be moved from its Park Position. Only 2 slews were affected by hold-ups  (2/36 slew affected, 6%, 2.5 minutes total hold-up time). 
• Booked Observation.  The planned  Booked observation (19:00 to 22:45 UT) failed to be scheduled in the session's observing plan. Reason unknown
• AstroPlan Schedular. The session's observing plan suffered a number of issue (booked observation wasn't included, optimisation stopped improving after only 8 out of 50 generations, the plan ended 2 hours earlier than it should, and took a full 15 mins to create.  Performance issue (due to a bug in ChooseTarget() has now be addressed (2022-12-16)

• Schedule Builder took a very long time to produce Observing Plan (18:10 - 18:25). This has already been noticed in recent sessions and is related to changes associated with support for Booked Observations. The observing plan for the S1071 session took 15 minutes to produce (and still didn't include the expected Booked Observation for time slot 19:00 to 22:45 UT. Running on development computer (slower CPU or longer time range took 20 minutes.  Examination of time breakdown for the S1071 Plan Creation showed that of the 15.6  minutes total time,  15.2 minutes was taken up by 49 generation runs (average 18.6s per generation).  ChooseTarget routine was executed 22,841,298 times absorbing 14.3 minutes.  Alot of this time was seemingly absorbed whilst the Schedular was occupied with RepairPlan (as this was called 9800 times, at 7s per call, total 10.8 minutes). Comparing these times with those taken for creating S1064 Plan (2022-11-28, 18:10 to 18:11) using AstroPlan 1.34.2, we still this took a total time of only 0.4 minutes (vs 15.6 min for S1071 plan), Run Generating (40) took only 8s (0.2s per generation vs 18s per generation for S1071 plan)). Choose Target was called only 103,262 times (vs 22 million for S1071 plan). Repair Plan was called 7800 times (for 40 generation, not much different than S1071 where it was called 9800 times for 50 generation) with Repair Time of <0.01s per repair (vs 7s per repair for S1071 plan).  Tracing added to AstroPlan 1.35.2 to record how many Overruns occur by type (an 'Overrun' is where a routine has reached the maximum number of attempts and exits the loop/routine). In a 200 Pop / 3 Gen test run, involving 1 booked observation & taking 1.65 mins, the overrun count was as follows nChooseTargetOverruns: 756114 (each involving 1000 attempts ie 756,114,000 separate code loops),  nReplacePointOverruns: 2367 (each 300 attempts), nCreatePlanOverruns:  3 (each 300 attempts) &  nTopUpPlanOverruns :  145 (each 300 attempts). Bug was found in ChooseTarget() routine that was causing the excessive overruns. Rerunning the 200 Pop/3 Gen test showed the number of ChooseTarget Overruns dropping from 756114 to only 1.  There is still a problem with preserving Booked Observations in the plan (see above)
  Fixed  2022-12-16 (AstroPlan 1.35.2). 
   
• Booked Observation of Jupiter (2022-12-15 19:00 to 22:45 UT) wasn't scheduled in the session's Observing Plan (18:10 - 18:25).  Booked Observation of Jupiter (2022-12-15 19:00 to 22:45 UT , 22 time lapse C & BVR frames at 10 min intervals, Booking ID 9) wasn't respresented in the observing created for the session. Unclear why. The facility had been working in session S1067 (using prior AstroPlan 1.35 version).  It is unlikely that it will be possible to diagnose a reason/explanation on why the booked observation didn't become scheduled.  Probably need to a do some daytime testing.  The Convergence Plot also flat-lined after generation 8 and didn't move towards a fully optimised plan (final score only 27.7) , the plan ended at 05:03 which was two hours before the expected end time based on -12 deg Sun Alt (dawn), and the plan took a full 15 minutes to create.  The latter problem are most probably a sideeffect of a bug in ChooseTarget() routine (see above issue).    A test plan was created the following day (200 pop, 50 gen, night date 2022-12-15, but starting at 17:04 (-12 deg Sun Alt rather than 18:35 (S1071 Start) ). The plan included the  booked observation of Jupiter ok. Plan again seemed to flatline early (this time after Gen 5), but progressed again at around Gen 15., then flat lined, progressed around Gen 22, flat-lined, til Gen 34 where there was a minor retrograde, before progressing to a final score value of 34.6. The plan ended at the expected time (-12 deg Sun Alt).  It took a long time to produce the plan (20 minutes).  It's unclear why the Schedular didn't produce an acceptable plan for the live session.  Without anything to go, the issue is put down to a glitch of some kind, and is closed after review (2022-12-16).  More critical at this time is resolving the issue whereby plan creation is taking a very long time.  Extra tracing added to AstroPlan 1.35.2 (2022-12-16) to record the number of BookedObservations fetched from Database and the number of booked observations for the best plan in each generation.  In a 200 / Pop 3 Gen Test run  involving 1 booked observation, the Booked Observation was present in Best Plan in Gen 1 and 2, but disappeared from the Plan in Generation 3, indicating there is a flaw in the schedular that allows Booked Observations to be 'lost'.    Testing 200 Pop / 3 Gen with extra tracing showed that in initial population (Gen 1)  96 out of 200 plans included the booked observation whilst 104 plan didn't.  Since the OverallFitness Score doesn't consider the number of Booked Observations this explains why Booked Observation can disappear from / not be included in the Session's 'Best' Observing Plan.   Reviewing the CreatePlan() routine didn't show origin of problem but tracking showed that BookedObservations were initially inserted into new Plans, but was some how being excluded when the check was made to ensure the plan includes 'MustInclude Targets. Fixed this issue so that all InitialPlans contain required BookedObservations, but the GA process is some how allowing BookedObservations to become excluded. Eventually resolved and fixed 2022-11-17.  Need to monitor as there is still a possibility that 1% of cases might slip through and still give the issue.
  Fixed  2022-12-17 (AstroPlan 1.35.2). 
   
• The AllSky Camera Hemisphere is regularly dewing up reducing quality of all sky images and affecting ability to get a reliable AllSKy Star Count.  Several attempts have been made to resolve the issue but each attempt has failed. Can we install a fan inside the AllSKy Camera to circulate air ?   Hemisphere was removed and wiped dry the following day (2022-12-16 11:15, Outside temperature -4.5°C,  Humidity 92%).  Dew of the inside of the hemisphere was in liquid form, which was a suprise as it had been frozen on the last occasion that hemisphere was removed to dry it, was this because of sunshine melting frozen dew, despite the -4.5°C outside temperature and which had reached a low of -8 degC at 08:00, or was this the effect of AllSky Camera Dew Heater keeping the temperature above freezing (even though the AllSky Camera casing was still very cold to the touch).   Prehaps the dew heater is over warming the air, allowing it to contain a higher total water content (which is absorbs from the outside cooler air), which then condenses out on the inner surface of the hemisphere where it is cooled by the very cold outside air.   Test to be conducted using a Light Source temporarily to confirm that the associated PowerPlug is definately working (i.e. it's transmitting power when zb.AllSkyHeaterPower.On = True). Issue is ongoing still. See further ticket on dew issue on S1088 notes page.  Closed after situation deemed to be improved with use of new O-Ring of right size.

• 'Book ID' column on AstroPlan's Plan Form should be readonly. Recently added column on Plan Form to support Booked Observations allows editing. It shouldn't, it should be read-only.

• Observation Point 12 (Uranus (ToO) had a double circle on AzAltResults chart.  Point 12 "Uranus (ToO)" was followed by the 'Missed Start' Point 13 "(NGC 891)".  One of the circles which seems smaller than a normal circle was probably an attempt to draw a smaller diameter open circle  for a Cancelled or Missed Start Observation.
  Fixed 2022-12-16  2022-12-16 (AstroMain 3.59.7).
   
• During analysis of earlier images from S1064, the last session indicated for NGC 5631 (w/SN 2022aaiq) was given as S697 when it should perhaps have been given as S1068 . Prehaps both sessions should have been stated (ie. latest one before and the earliest one after ?)  The web section from S1068 is the most relevant for web page construction for S1064.
  To review and fix 2022-12-16 (AstroMain 3.59.7).  

• AstroPlan Schedule Builder should report the presence/ number of Booked Observation to be included in Plan at the start and to track presence of Booked Observation for each generation.  
  Done 2022-12-16 (AstroPlan 1.35.2). 
   
• Add a option for testing AstroPlan Schedule Builder that reuses the arrays compiled for Targets, Sun, Moon, Airmass Profiles. This option would speed up testing of plan creation,  GA and/or graphing code considerably.
  Done 2022-12-17 (AstroPlan 1.35.2). 
   
• Apply a Pressure Trim to bring graphs of Weather Station Barometer Pressure readings in line with 'correct' Pressure Values. WeatherStation pressure readings are around 10-12 mB higher than the pressure values reported by XCWeather and MetOffice reporting of Aberdeen (Dyce) Airport.  By adding a Pressure Trim to AstroWeather values can be roughly corrected to bring them in line with those expected.  Implemented in AstroWeather 1.19.7 using new numPressureTrim field on Settings Field which is saved upon closing AstroWeather. Trim set to value of -11.  Note: The Pressure Box Graph on website still uses the one produced directly by the Virtual Weather Station software (VWS) and are thus showing uncorrected values.

• AstroWeather's Chart creation should supplement Observatory Temperature/Humidity using Channel2 data when Temperature falls below -5°C.  WeatherStation stops output of correct temperature/humidity data when Base Station temperature falls below -5°C.  AstroMain should similarly supplement Observatory Temperatures in this situation.

• Save M33 transients to a 'M33 Nova' store folder and save pictures with name like 'M33_ATxxxxx'.   Save M33 transient target images to a supplementary store folder in a similar way that  M31 transients get saved to 'M31 Nova' store folder, and pictures get saved like "M31_Nova_2022-09a...png"  etc.
  Done  2022-12-19 (AstroMain 3.59.8). 
   
• Query: See if power on time for Aux Light and Capture ObsCam Image delay can be adjusted to reliably provide a Colour ObsCam Picture at Start and End of Session.   ObsCam pictures captured at start, end of session, at session suspension and adhoc images are sometimes captured in colour and sometime in black and white. How they be reliably obtained in colour.  Capturing the image after light had been on for a longer time found to not guarentee a colour image. Whether image is b/w or colour seems to depend on the orientation of the telescope and the amount of light it reflects back towards the camera.  May not be able to reliably give Colour Image as required.
  Closed as not feasible 2022-12-16 (AstroMain 3.59.7 / AstroObsCam). 
   
• When Target Coordinates (including offsets) lies outside of FOV of a locate frame, the direction to the target should be indicated by a red arrow.   For testing purposes the following image fields could be used :  1071001.Focus_Field_0.Loc1,   1071009.UGC_11698_w_SN2022abik.Loc1
