Session Aims & Highlights (2023-10-04)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. AstroMain. Check new AstroMain version (3.62.15) for recent fixes and improvements.

Highlights

• Targets. 30/30 planned targets were completed
• AstroMain. No issues with new AstroMain version (3.62.15)
•  Dome Slews. There were significant issues with dome slewing during the session and during dome parking.  12 dome slews (38% of all slews) were affected by significant hold-up  (Hold Up Stats: 12/32 slews affected, 38%, 17.4 minutes total hold-up time).   Dome failed to park correctly, ending up at around Az 112°, some 12° from the Observatory's Park Position (Az 90°).
•  AllSky Camera. AllSky Camera was affected by significant condensation/dewing.

• Dome Slews were badly affected by hold-ups during the session. 12 dome slews (38%) were affected by significant hold-up,  with individual delays up of 185s (Hold Up Stats: 12/32 slews affected, 38%, 17.4 minutes total hold-up time).  This wasted around 17 minutes of time. Again fortunately it didn't lead to any lost targets (due to good slewing/centering performance and the absence of any camera issues etc).  Issue was previously improved by an adjustment to the Dome's Drive Wheel tension but still occurs occasionally (e.g. S1142, S1143, S1145, S1154) but are interpersed with other sessions (eg S1140, S1141, S1144) where there were no or very few hold-ups.   Heavy dew that occurred during the session is believed to be the main factor on this occasion. Dome Wheels to be checked and dome flange cleaned / dried. As a way for reducing the problem is there a way of attaching a sponge or something to a one part of the observatory wall that would wipe the flange dry during dome rotation ? A sponge 'wipe' attached to one of dome's roof clamps was tried but didn't help and has been abandoned. An investigation into the issue was carried out following session S1158 (see Investigation - Hold-ups during Dome Slewing, 2023-10-25 ) and has led to the application of Anti-Slip Tape to the dome's inner roof flange. Results still pending.  Problem was evenually found to be due to a loose/worn drive wheel connector. A replacement Drive Wheel & Connector eventually arrived on 2023-11-17 and was successfully installed in the Observatory (See Pulsar Dome - Replacement Rotation Drive Wheel, 2023-11-17 ).

Minor Issues

• JPG picture of spectra from Nova Cas 2021 not displaying on the Current Session Images web page (IPAD & MS Edge). Graph spectra pictures were produced for Target 3/30 (Nova Cas 2021), but the spectra graph picture for the first main frame, does not appear next to the normal S image on the 'images_current.htm' web page on both IPad and MS Edge around 3 hours after the chart was produced.  Checking files show that the chart is copied to live folder as 'Session.SpectraChart04.png' (22 KB), and is uploaded and present on WebSite's 'Live' Subfolder as shown by WinSCP. Similar problem was seen in Session S1150 (2023-09-28) except that it occured with IPad/Safari bunot with MS Edge. Is this a problem with caching.  Checking again shows that on MS Edge an old spectra graph from Nova Cas 2021 (from 2023-09-29) is drawn on the 'images_current.htm' web page but it (Session.SpectraChart07.png) is drawn next to the image from Target 6/30 (AT2023hxd).  It doesn't appear at all on IPad/Safari, neither next to Nova Cas 2021 image nor next to the  AT2023hxd image. It seems AstroPlan is not updating file timestamp when replacing previous session charts with blank .png files with updated date (Session.SpectraChart01.png to Session.SpectraChart31.png all have last modified dates of 2019-09-03 (08:49) (except for Session.SpectraChart04.png, which has date '2023-10-04 22:09'.  Session.SpectraChart32 to Session.SpectraChart50 all have last modified date of '2023-10-04 20:54'. Data caching issues will inevitably follow from this anomaly. Checking code shows that ResetLiveFiles() routine, which is executed at the beginning of each new live session,  shows that 'C:\Data\CCD Imaging\Live\Blanks\blank_chart.png' is copied to a Session.SpectraChartxx.png file (where xx takes value 01 to 50) based on a '1 to 50' loop which calls CopyFileWithNewDate(). The later routine uses Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile() followed by File.SetLastWriteTimeUtc() which changes each file's Last Modified Date to the current Date/Time.  It is conjectured that a file permission issue is blocking either the overwriting of  Session.SpectraChart01.png to Session.SpectraChart31.png or changing files Last Modified Date. Tracing added to AstroPlan 1.38.6 to log exceptions occuring in CopyFileWithNewDate().  A test button routine (accessed from btnTestResetSpectraCharts) is also added to AstroPlan 1.38.6 to test the resetting of SpectraChart files. When run the TestResetSpectraCharts() successfully reset all Session.SpectraCharts givng them a up to date last modified date. Issue deemed closed 2023-10-05, but with proposal to monitor next couple of sessions.  The following S1155 session showed that issue remains unresolved.  More investigation showed that the problem was caused by code in AstroMain's ConvertFitsToJpg which was copying blank_chart.png as Session.SpectraChart" + id + ".png"  without updating Last Modified date .  The offending code was removed from AstroMain as the job of overwriting past SpectraChart images is the job of AstroPlan's ResetLiveFiles() routine. Issue fixed 2023-10-07 (AstroMain 3.62.17).

Reviewing start of S1155 Session (2023-10-05) shows that the ResetSpectraCharts code section of ResetLiveFiles was executed at 22:53:48, and there were no exception messages to indicate any failures.  Examining the Live Folder shows Session.SpectraChart03 to Session.SpectraChart50 have been reset with Last Modified dates of 2023-10-05 22:53, however Session.SpectraChart01 and Session.SpectraChart02 have Last Modified dates of 2019-09-03 08:49 (ie. same timestamp as 'blank_chart.png') indicating that these particular files either haven't been reset or haven't had timestamps updated.  Log file doesn't record any exception associated with CopyFileWithNewDate(). So its a mystery.
  Using the Test ResetSpectraCharts button facility resets all SpectraChart files with Last Modified dates of '2023-10-06 00:07' (apart from Session.SpectraChart04.png which is specifically excluded from the 'TestResetSpectraCharts()' routine.
  
  Further Update 2023-10-06. Reviewing end of S1155 Session (2023-10-05) shows Live Folder ended up with Session.SpectraChart01 to .SpectraChart03 and .SpectraChart18 to  .SpectraChart50 have Last Modified dates of '2023-10-06 00:07' (these are from when the TestResetSpectraCharts()' routine was run at a point in session when 3 targets had been completed).  Session.SpectraChart04 to .SpectraChart17 with exception of  .SpectraChart11) have Last Modified dates of 2019-09-03 08:49 (ie. same timestamp as 'blank_chart.png') indicating that these particular files have somehow been been reset during the session (either by AstroPlan or AstroMain).  17 corresponds to the number of target frame sets completed in the session (matching the first 17 of 50 Session.TargetFramexx.jpg files have been utilised in the session).  Session.SpectraChart11 has a Last Modified dates of 2023-10-06 04:20 and corresponds to spectra chart produced for first S Filter frame from Nova Cas 2021 which was acquired at this time.  This is important diagnostic data that will permit bug fixing to develop along a completely new avenue
  
  Update 2023-10-07. Examining AstroMain  ExtractSpectra_OB() code the realtime spectra chart is defined as
    SpectraChartFileName  = SpectraChartFolder + "\" + LastJpgPictureFileName + ".spectra" + ".png" (eg.   0039.oid004.1154023.Nova_Cas_2021.0006.spectra.png)
  is accessed after calling SpectraChart.AddSpectra() which calls  SpectraChart.SaveChartToFile() which saves the Spectra Chart as SpectraChartFileName
  In Live Sessions the Spectra Chart is then copied to "C:\Data\CCD Imaging\Live\" + "Session.SpectraChart.png"
  Finally if Spectra is first one in an image set (eg Frame 1/5) the Spectra Chart is copied to "C:\Data\CCD Imaging\Live\Session.SpectraChart" + id + ".png"
  In ConvertFitsToJPG()   there is a code section where  '..\Live\Blanks\blank_chart.png' is  copied to '..\Live\Session.SpectraChart" + id + ".png"  comments suggest that this is done so that a  blank .png file is written in order to ovewrite any previous Spectra Chart picture'. However this is the task of AstroPlan's ResetLiveFiles and done without changing the Last Modified date is causing the caching issue for the browsers.  AstroMain 3.62.17 modified to remove the copy blank_chart.png code.
   
• 'AllSky Camera Pictures showing signs of very bad condensation/dew. Condensation/dew inside the AllSky Camera's hemisphere is an occasional issue and when it occurs it introduces visual artefacts and effects image quality over parts of the sky and reduces the AllSky Star Count.  These have impacts on Aurora Imaging (northern panorama) and Observatory Operations using 'Too Few Stars' option as one criteria for opening/closing the observatory. The issue follows heavy rain earlier in the day.  Camera hemisphere needs to be opened in daylight and dried out, ideally replacing air inside with lower humidity air if possible. Following day (2023-10-05) was too wet and/or too humid to open the AllSky Camera's hemisphere. Resolved but still any occassional issue. Overall improvement came after adding two circular vent holes at base of camera in mid Nov 2023 (see AllSky Camera - Ventilation holes (attempt to cure dew problem, 2023-11-15). Ticket cl`osed 2023-11-15. but continue to monitor.

Small Defects

• 'AstroMove encountered an unhandled exception when clicking to open folder(s) for Session S1154 when it had not yet been copied to the Development Computer. During the evening of 2023-10-04 when session S1154 was running,  AstroMove was opened on the Development Computer. This listed '2023-10-04 S1154' as topmost session on the Sessions tab. Accidentally clicking 'S1154 Logs'  produced an Unhandled Exception. Though the program can be continued from Just-In Time Debugger using its 'Continue' button, the exception should nevetheless be caught by the program itself.. It seems that initially the exception is caught (associated with a fix to an earlier reported issue), but after first opening an older session log folder and then clicking S1154 logs seems to generate the exception.   Unable to replicate issue running AstroMove in Visual Studio debugger.  Improvements made to 'File Not Found' reporting, so that name of session can't be overwritten by "" from GetAlternateSessionName

• AstroAllSky didn't download/save 'uk-kandkp_2023-10-05.jpg' during morning internet 'SpaceWeather/Aurora' downloads. The new 3.19.3 version of AstroAllSky, installed on the AllSky/Weather computer yesterday, was due to have downloaded a 6th file from the internet at end of the 2023-10-04 night session (renaming it as 'uk-kandkp_2023-10-05.jpg'). There were no messages saying file 'kandkp-bar.jpg'  had been downloaded or any associated error messages.   The new version did download the 'station-k-index.png' file ok (renamed as 'station-k-index_2023-10-05.jpg') showing that modifications to AstroAllSky's settings were successfully accepted.  Examining code shows that in first instance the downloaded files are saved to ' ..\AllSky Imaging\Night Information' folder before being copied to the relevant Session folder.   Checking the 'Night Information' folder shows that a 'uk-kandkp_2023-10-05.jpg' files has in fact been downloaded at the '2023-10-05 07:12'.   An exception in copying 'uk-kandkp_2023-10-05.jpg' to the session folder would have been caught but wouldn't have currently been logged.   Checking the following night session folder ('AllSky 2023-10-05') shows that the 'uk-kandkp_2023-10-05.jpg' file has been copied to this folder, instead of the expected 'AllSky 2023-10-04' folder.   It is presumed that the final part of CaptureInternetImages() execution (running as a Thread) (including download and saving of the 6th file, 'uk-kandkp...jpg') happened to overstep the execution of 2023-10-04 session into execution of 2023-10-05 session which occured at 07:12:58.   AstroAllSky 3.19.4 modified to include additional tracing and allow additional time at end of a session to allow the thread to complete. A new button ('Download SpaceWeather Files') plus associated routine ('btnDownloadSpaceWeatherFiles_Click()') has been added to allow manual initiated download of the 'SpaceWeather' Files, in case there was a problem with Newtork or with AstroAllSky that prevented their earlier download.

• Whilst making final image of NGC 7385 using the ImageSet/Image/Build facility the 'label1' field unexpectedly contained the value 'True' instead of 'NGC 7385' (session analysis)  Information shown on the 'Target' tab was normal. NGC 7385 is a spiral galaxy and the target was from the 'Deep Sky Challenge' program.  Examining code for how label1 field get assigned revealed an anomalous assignment line 'txtObjTextLabel1.Text = '   in listboxObjectFolders_SelectedIndexChanged(). Debugging confirms that this code with assign "True" to txtObjTextLabel1.Text which then get transferred to label1 in ImageBuilder.  The correct code is  'txtObjTextLabel1.Text = VM.ObjectName', but the VM.ObjectName seems to have been accidentally removed at some point. Tracking back the bug was introduced in AstroMain 3.62.15 but it has only now been noticed during development of AstroMain 3.62.17.

Continuous Improvement

• Extend AstroMove's Copy 'Aurora Files' From AllSky/Weather Computer to include the "uk-kandkp_&NIGHTDATE.jpg" file. AstroAllSky 3.19.3 has been updated today (2023-10-04) to support downloading of 'kandkp-bar.jpg" file from the geomag.bgs.ac.uk site each morning. The file is saved to the night's session folder with a name like "uk-kandkp_2023-10-05.jpg" . AstroMove now needs to be updated to support the copying of this file to the Development/Analysis Computer, following an Observing Session.

• Modify AstroMove's Copy 'Aurora Files' From AllSky/Weather Computer to download the "station-k-index_&NIGHTDATE.png" file. AstroAllSky previously downloaded 'planetary-k-index&NIGHTDATE.gif ' file from the 'services.swpc.noaa.gov/images' website, but this file is no longer available. AstroAllSky settings have been updated today (2023-10-04) to download an alternative file 'station-k-index&NIGHTDATE.png.  AstroMove now needs to be updated to support the copying of this new file to the Development/Analysis Computer, following an Observing Session.

• Add "uk-kandkp..jpg" and "station-k-index...png" pictures to the local Session Pictures page that is built by AstroMain.  BuildJpgPicturePageNew() routine updated to display "uk-kandkp..jpg" and "station-k-index...png" pictures within 'Space Weather' section.
