Session Aims & Highlights (2024-09-14)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.

Highlights-

• Targets. 15/25 planned targets observations were completed, with 5 other target partially completed (3/5 of these were due to JobQueue hanging whilst leading to a session suspension). The 3 others targets failed due to a cloud/session suspension.
• JobQueue.  There were 3 incidents of the issue where the ImageLink process freezes for 5 minutes, leading to Target Abort and Session Suspension. causing the loss of 24 minutes from the observing plan, affecting the amount and quality of images collected during the session.
• Dome. No issues opening/closing shutter during session.  Dome closed and parked ok at end of session.

Major Issues

• Three incidents of ongoing issue in which Job Queue freezes whilst performing an Image Link, leading to session suspension (21:12, 00:38 & 04:05).  The description of each incident is described under separate Minor Issue tickets below.  Collectively the 3 incidents represent a Major Issue, due to the time impact (8 minutes lost on each incident), reduced image quality (targets may not be properly centered), and the cancellation of several main frames (due to the interrupted observation and time slot limitations). Whilst the issue normally occurs when Image Linking a Locate Frame, one of the incidents in this session involved ImageLinking of a Cam 2 Reference Frame. The issue was investigated (Investigation - Job Queue freezing whilst performing a Locate Frame Image Link, leading to Session Suspension, 2024-09-12)  and tracing identfied that the freeze isn't triggered directly by the 'InsertWCS' call (Image Linking) but is triggered instead by following GetObjectRaDec() , .dObjectRa, .dObjectDec calls which access the result of the Image Linking.  The insertion of short (500ms) delays between calls to TheSky6 from AstroMain's ImageLinking routines, added to AstroMain 3.69.8 (2024-09-16) was eventually deemed to have fixed the issue, after seeing no further incidents of the problem during the following 4 sessions S1245-S1248A  (2024-09-16 to 2024-09-28).

Minor Issues

• ObsCam Starting and Suspended Images weren't created and uploaded to website. AstroObsCam's TCP/IP connection to AstroMain had been reestablished after issues with Observatory Connection to Router/Internet on 2024-09-06 to 2024-09-08.  Issue probably also affected session S1240 (2024-09-10) to S1242 (2024-09-12) but went unnoticed at the time. Problem resolved in session by restarting AstroObsCam.  A 'Session Finished' picture was successfully taken and uploaded to website.

• Job Queue froze whilst performing an Image Link on Locate Frame (21:14) . Whilst performing a plate solution on Guider Reference Frame for Target 1/25 (NGC 3206 w/SN2024bch ) the Obs.Overseer gave a warning "ScopeMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 21:12:49)", a TheSky6 Alert with message "TheSky6 isn't running or isn't working correctly" and a warning "Task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time?  (21:15)" . The ObsManager aborted the Target and the session was suspended..  Issue resolved itself after a few minutes, with results of Image Link (solved in 319.3s) being posted whilst ObsCam was taking a 'Supended Session' image. Image took only 0xx s to image link during Analyse ReducedFolder (post-session).  Problem has occurred before in several recent sessions (S1242, S1240 & S1235). The issue was investigated (Investigation - Job Queue freezing whilst performing a Locate Frame Image Link, leading to Session Suspension, 2024-09-12) and tracing identfied that the freeze isn't triggered directly by the 'InsertWCS' call (Image Linking) but is triggered instead by following GetObjectRaDec() , .dObjectRa, .dObjectDec calls which access the result of the Image Linking.  The insertion of short (500ms) delays between calls to TheSky6 from AstroMain's ImageLinking routines, added to AstroMain 3.69.8 (2024-09-16) was eventually deemed to have fixed the issue after seeing no further incidents of the problem during the following 4 sessions S1245-S1248A  (2024-09-16 to 2024-09-28).

Whilst performing a plate solution on Guider Reference Frame for Target 12/25 (SN 2023rvj ) the Obs.Overseer gave a warning "ScopeMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 00:38:08)", a TheSky6 Alert with message "TheSky6 isn't running or isn't working correctly" and a warning "Task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time?  (00:40)" . The ObsManager aborted the Target and the session was suspended..  Issue resolved itself after a few minutes, with results of Image Link (solved in 314.5s ) being posted whilst ObsCam was taking a 'Supended Session' image.The issue was investigated (Investigation - Job Queue freezing whilst performing a Locate Frame Image Link, leading to Session Suspension, 2024-09-12)  and tracing identfied that the freeze isn't triggered directly by the 'InsertWCS' call (Image Linking) but is triggered instead by following GetObjectRaDec() , .dObjectRa, .dObjectDec calls which access the result of the Image Linking.  The insertion of short (500ms) delays between calls to TheSky6 from AstroMain's ImageLinking routines, added to AstroMain 3.69.8 (2024-09-16) was eventually deemed to have fixed the issue, after seeing no further incidents of the problem during the following 4 sessions S1245-S1248A  (2024-09-16 to 2024-09-28).

• Job Queue froze whilst performing an Image Link on Locate Frame (04:05) . Whilst performing a plate solution on Locate 2 Frame for Target 23/25 (SN 2022qwx ) the Obs.Overseer gave a warning "ScopeMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 04:05:35) ", a TheSky6 Alert with message "TheSky6 isn't running or isn't working correctly" and a warning "Task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time?  (04:08)" . The ObsManager aborted the Target and the session was suspended..  Issue resolved itself after a few minutes whilst ObsCam was taking a 'Supended Session' image, but the results of the Image Link weren't reported (unlike other cases). Log file indicates that ImageLink hadn't succeeded during initial attempt and was proceeding to Search Distance #1, when it encountered the bAbortTarget flag.  ScopeMonitor resumed after 296, which is likely consistent with other cases.  Locate 2 Image (01243148)  took only 2.7s to image link during Analyse ReducedFolder (post-session). The issue was investigated (Investigation - Job Queue freezing whilst performing a Locate Frame Image Link, leading to Session Suspension, 2024-09-12)  and tracing identfied that the freeze isn't triggered directly by the 'InsertWCS' call (Image Linking) but is triggered instead by following GetObjectRaDec() , .dObjectRa, .dObjectDec calls which access the result of the Image Linking.  The insertion of short (500ms) delays between calls to TheSky6 from AstroMain's ImageLinking routines, added to AstroMain 3.69.8 (2024-09-16) was eventually deemed to have fixed the issue, after seeing no further incidents of the problem during the following 4 sessions S1245-S1248A  (2024-09-16 to 2024-09-28).

Small Defects

• The ObsOverseer report messages that warn that a task is taking long time is poorly formatted (21:15).  When ObsOverseer detects that a taking is taking a long time it produces a report message like
    Obs.Overseer                Warning    task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time? (21:15)
  it should be written as follows (one space removed and a capitalised Task)
      Obs.Overseer                Warning   Task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time? (21:15)
  ' task ..'  should be written as 'Task ..'. Fixed in AstroMain 3.69.7.

• PowerOutage is not listed as a Failure Reason in AstroPlan's Plan table. PowerOutage (31) was added to AstroMain's FailureState enum list on 2024-03-08 (CI S1196), but doesn't seem to have been added to the equivalent enum list in AstroPlan.  Fixed in AstroPlan 1.40.9.

• The log message "Sky conditions have improved, the session can be resumed" is inappriopriate if Session Suspension was due to a frozen Job queue (04:12).   In the cases that Job Queue freezes whilst performing an Image Link and the ObsManager intervenes to suspend the session, the log messages like the following are produced after the queue has resumed and the conditions are checked "Sky conditions have improved (Clarity 33.1, Stars 54)" and "Sky conditions have improved, the session can be resumed".  The messages imply that conditions were previously poorer (and caused the session suspension) and are now improved.  This is not necessarily the case.  Whilst Conditions should obviously be checked and confirmed as ok before resuming a session the text in the messages is not appropriate and should say  "Sky conditions are ok (Clarity 33.1, Stars 54)".   Job Queue is running normally, the session can be resumed"

• The report message "Session Suspended (Due to wait on timer)" is unclear and is inappriopriate if Session Suspension was due to a frozen Job queue. In cases where ObsManager aborts the current Target due to a frozen Job Queue and suspends the session, the message  "Session Status.. Session Suspended (Due to wait on timer)" doesn't seem related to the reason that the session was suspended and should be improved. 'wait on timer' is written when the fail reason has the value 30 ( FailureState.WaitOnTimer).  'Reason' is set to FailureState.WaitOnTimer in CanResume() routine when MinutesSince(TimeSessionSuspended) < 2.   This is purely that a session can't be resumed until at least 2 minutes have elapsed since session was last suspended. Fix attempted in AstroMain 3.69.7, CanResume() now returns False & FailureState.FrozenTheSky6 if VM.TheSkyScopeConnection = ScopeState.ErrorX instead of defaulting to FailureState.WaitOnTimer.

Continuous Improvement

• Add trace statements to AstroMain's ImageLinking routines. Following the Major Issue in S1243 "Job Queue freezes whilst performing an Image Link, leading to session suspension" it is proposed to add tracing message statements to ImageLinking routines to try to identify the code line(s) where the freeze point is occuring.

• Consider whether a 'Failure Mode' should be added to Target Observation in AstroPlan's Plan to indicate why a Target was only partially completed.  At the moment the Failure Mode is blank, and therefore offers no information on why a Target wasn't completed. There could be more than one factor that leads to a Target not being fully completed, so the 'Failure Mode would need to reflect the principal or most significant reason. This might be somewhat difficult to track, so may be there should be a process that ranks the various factors.  New 'FailureState' items such as 'LateStart',  'FrozenTheSky6' added to AstroMain 3.69.7 & AstroPlan to support future implementation.   New global parameter, ReasonForDelay (integer), added to AstroMain 3.69.7 to record the most recent reason causing a delay to a target observation.
