Session Aims & Highlights (2025-07-07)

Main aims

1. CCD Camera. Test if major CCD Camera issues during Last Session have been resolved or not
2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions and the short summer night.

Highlights

• Targets.  Only 1/8 planned target was completed with 2 targets partially completed.  Other targets failed due to camera delays / end of time slot, cloud or wind. One submitted ToO target also failed due to Cloud / Session Suspension.  Images couldn't be collected for two key targets (T CrB & NGC 5957 w/SN2025fvw )
• CCD Camera. Dispite attempted fixes in AstroMain 3.75.11 there were again multiple issues with the CCDSoft / CCDCamera during the session, and due to the delays from RestartCCDSoft operations a number of targets couldn't be completed. 3 user interventions were made to try to resolve problems during the session. Some extra information about the issues was collected and might helped to provide a subsequent mitigations / fixes to AstroMain
•  Dome. There was no issues opening/closing the shutter during the session. Dome closed and parked at end of session ok.

Major Issues

• Several failures preparing for or taking CCD Images using SBIG Camera/CcdCamera. Desite attempted fixes in AstroMain 3.75.11 there were several CcdCamera related issues during S1339 session. 1). CcdCamera froze at 23:57:28 whilst setting Camera properties prior to taking Focus Frame 18/23. 2). Camera connection during  RestartCCDSoft failed at 23:58:46 with "SBIG driver: Device not found".  3) Camera connection failure wasn't followed up, causing further image failures at 00:17:14+  . Time after SBIG Camera restarted increased to 30s again (it had been dropped to 20s on 2025-05-21 for MI S1328).    Issues with CCDCamera / CCDSoft.Camera fixed on or just before 2025-07-27. No camera related issues from during sessions S1343 to S1349A).  Issues with CCDCamera / CCDSoft.Camera fixed on or just before 2025-07-27. As a result there were no camera related issues occurred during sessions S1343 to S1349A).
   Resolved 2025-07-27 (AstroMain 3.77.2 / 3.77.3 ) 

Minor Issues

• Camera connection issues during by a RestartCCDSoft operation are not being followed up & resolved ().  Whilst measuring a Foc1 Focus Profile for a NearZenith Focus Field, the CcdCamera froze at 23:57:28 whilst setting Camera properties prior to taking Focus Frame 18/23.  The Obs.Overseer intervened after 30s to call RestartCCDSoft() due to 'Frozen CcdCamera' . The ConnectCamera call in RestartCCDSoft() failed on both connect attempts with the exception "SBIG driver: Device not found", and the RestartCCDSoft() finished with gCameraConnected=False. The following focus frame attempts (19/23 to 21/23) all failed as the Camera is not started. Fixed attempted in AstroMain 3.75.12.  RestartCCDSoft() routine reworked such that in event of that a Camera reconnection attempt is required, but it fails, a second attempt to RestartCCDSoft() is made

• A CCDSoft warning dialog was unexpectedly shown on two ocaassions with the message "You are about to start another instance of CCDSoft (time ?).  During operations a CCDSoft warning dialog was unexpectedly shown with the message "You are about to start another instance of CCDSoft. Are you sure you want to continue?"  Same/similar issue occurred in .Session S1336 and S1337. Attempted fix made to AstroMain 3.75.9 on 2025-07-01 evidentally hasn't worked (or at least still doesn't work in certain cases).  Hypothesis is that issue might occur when a Camera Connection during Restart Fails, and after setting bRestartCCDSoft back to False, a code line refers to CCDSoft Camera object and leads to a second instance attempt  Issues with CCDCamera / CCDSoft.Camera fixed on or just before 2025-07-27. As a result there were no camera related issues occurred during sessions S1343 to S1349A).

• CCDCamera Freezing during Daytime Camera Tests  (2025-07-08).  Daytime testing following S1339 session showed that the CCDCamera would occasionally frreze, replicating the issue that happens during live sessions such as S1339.  During three tests (TestCCDCameraWithFocusFrames, each involving 90 focus frames) the number of CCDCamera freezes (requiring calls to RestartCCDSoft() were 3, 2, 1.  The freezes happened in
    GetCamera.State,
  GetCamera.TimeExposureTime
  SetCameraProperties / Subframe /
  GetCamera.IsExposureComplete /  SetCamera.ExposureTime
  GetCamera.IsExposureComplete /  GetCamera.Status
  GetCamera.IsExposureComplete /  SetCamera.ExposureTime /   SetCamera.ImageReduction
   The first case happened immediately after finishing CameraConnection.
  The last 3 cases are associated with TakeImageAsync's 'wait for exposure to complete' code.
  Issue :  'Set AutoSaveOn(0)' (and Set ExposureTime(0) whilst bRestartingCCDSoft and timed-out after 2s
  Query :  Set AutoSavePath(-5).   Issues with CCDCamera / CCDSoft.Camera were fixed on or just before 2025-07-27. As a result no camera related issues occurred during sessions S1343 to S1349A.
   Resolved 2025-07-27 (AstroMain 3.77.2 / 3.77.3 ) 

Small Defects

• Log messages using the '(alert)' tag aren't being colour coded in finalised log (21:57, 00:15, 01:16). Colour coding of tagged log records was added to AstroMain 3.75.11.  Log messages using the '(alert)' tag should be colour coded with red text but weren't during 3 relevant cases in S1339. Fixed in AstroMain 3.75.12.

• Several small anomalous shifts in Z axis magnetometer reading over a 3 hour period (22:40, 23:35). Just prior to session start and during ongoing monitoring of magnetometer readings after Remedial Fix2b there were several small anomalous shifts in Z Axis readings (between 21:15 and 23:55) with the most noticable shifts occuring at 22:40 & 23:35 with shifts of -28 nT & +56 nT respectively (see Remedial Fix 2 / 2b Update 2025-07-07 ).

• 'Test CCDCamera/Focus Frames' routine was allowed to start with CcdCamera in a Pending State (2025-07-08).  Daytime testing following S1339 session showed that the 'TestCCDCameraFocusFrames' routine was allowed to start at 2025-07-08 16:05:51 with CcdCamera in a Pending State (around 6-7s pending). Fixed in AstroMain 3.75.12.  Routine now checks the state of CCDCamera when starting and aborts if CcdCamera is pending.  The routine also checks that Camera is connected. 
   Fixed 2025-07-08 (AstroMain 3.75.12)

Continuous Improvement

• CCDCamera Get Property and Set Property Failures should be tagged as (warn) log messages when CCDSoft is intentionally killed (23:54: 00:20, 01:16). RestartCCDSoft() is often used in an attempt to fix a Frozen CcdCamera and as part of this operation CCDSoft is killed which releases the frozen GetProperty or SetProperty routine where execution is frozen, which the resulting exception is logged as an error.  The exception is expected and shouldn't be shown as a message with red text in the finalised log file, instead messages at this time whilst CCDSoft isn't running should be tagged with '(warn)' instead of '(error)'. Implemented in AstroMain 3.75.12. New flag bKillingCCDSoft added to indicate period of time that CCDSoft is being closed.  Several new routines (WriteGetPropertyException(), WriteSetPropertyException(), WriteGetPropertyTimeOut(), WriteSetPropertyTimeOut(), WriteSetPropertyResult(), WriteSetPropertyResult() )  added to rationalise the logging of CcdCamera message, and use a '(warn)' tag instead of '(error)' tag when bKillingCCDSoft=True.   Similar tag condition is added for logging of exceptions from  Image.AttachToActiveImager() in TakeFocusImage()

• Disable setting of szTargetName to "Queue" in Execute. A change was made in 2022-11-28 (CI S1063 to set szTargetName = "Queue" in ExecuteQueue before messaging the state of the queue. This is considered inappropriate now and as a trial the code-lines will be commented out.   Implemented in AstroMain 3.75.12.

• Consider removing the repeat connection attempt in ConnectCamera().   In AstroMain 3.75.11 and earlier versions ConnectCamera() will make a second attempt to connect the camera in the event of a failure on the first attempt. This sounds good, but in practice in the event of a failure on first attempt, the second attempt always fails with same error message. Typically it is a failure that can only be resolved by a call to RestartCCDSoft(), and it would be better to disable the second attempt, and save the time.   Implemented in AstroMain 3.75.12.

• Consider adjusting the return time for Get CcdCamera GetProperty/SetProperty calls when the CcdCamera is frozen. Each call to get or set a CcdCamera property takes 2s when the CcdCamera is Pending or Frozen.  Things could be speeded up by an early return in this situation.  ssues with CCDCamera / CCDSoft.Camera fixed on or just before 2025-07-27. As a result no camera related issues occurred during sessions S1343 to S1349A. Ticket closed 2025-08-16.

• Add colour coding to finalised session report file . Colour Coding has been added to finalised log files in AstroMain 3.75.11 which is a useful aid whilst reviewing log files and searching for actual or potential issues.  It would be handy if finalised report files could also have colour coding added. Tags would need to be generated either in the originally generated report.htm or when generating the finalised report file.  This would involve prefixing & suffixing 'Warning' lines with <span style="color: DarkOrange"> & </span> or <span style="color: Red"> & </span> for 'Alert' and 'Fail' lines  Proof of concept established (2025-08-16).

• Add cropped X, Y, Z magnetograms from Sumburgh Head station. Consider downloading and auto-cropping X. Y, Z magnetograms for Sumbugh Head station (sum)  ( https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/summary/awn/sum/2025/07/sum_20250709.png ) in similar fashion to those for Crooktree Station (crk2) station. This has been triggered by Crooktree Station going offline on 2025-07-09 18:30 UT.
