Session Aims & Highlights (2026-02-17)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. AstroMain. Check overall stability and capability of AstroMain 3.80.14 following significant software changes made in during the last month, together with new StateMachine (based on restructure of existing SessionState code blocks) and a new ObsManager Main Loop made during the fortnight prior to that which was only partially tested during S1391 & S1392 sessions in Mid -Jan.

Highlights

• Targets. 17/34 planned targets were completed with 2 targets partially completed. Oother targets failed due to cloud/session suspension
• AstroMain. AstroMain 3.80.16  ...
• ObsManager.  ObsManager and its new state machine operated fine during the session that including two 'suspending -suspended' pathways.
• CCD Camera.  No issues
• AstroAllSky.  The AstroAllSky program failed to annotate stars during first part of session, until software issue was fixed and program restarted.
• AllSky/Weather Computer.  Windows Explorer has a problem during the and produced a black desktop. In trying to fix it by restarting the ExplorerPatcher the task bar was lost and couldn't be restore.   Limped along using workarounds.   Computer was successfully restarted the following day which resolved the issue.
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session.

• Problem with Powerbox and Focuser1 not connected when trying to started session (19:53). After putting AstroMain into AutoStart it was observed that there were red flag against PowerBox and Focuser1, and there was an error why trying to start the Telescope. A red 'Telescope Alert' alert was raised at 19:53:09 with the message "ASCOM Telescope not connnected", and the Observatory was placed back into Manual Mode.  A repeat attempt failed to Connect to Power Box.  Observatory Programs were restarted and Pegasus Unity Frontend used to confirm that the Powerbox was restarted. This time there was no problem connecting to the Powerbox at startup,  Unless a pattern develops the issue is put down a glitch. Had the problem had happened without user monitoring / during later night autostart issue would have ranked as a Major Issue.   Issue closed after review.

• AllSky Camera's annotated images display any named stars, AstroMain seeing Star Count 0 (20:06). This problem also affected the previous session. Debugging code eventually showed that the issue was due to the introduction of common AstroRoutine.vb and a change to ConvertRaDecToAzAlt() which now works on Longitude parameter being +ve East (rather than +ve West) as assumed by AstroAllSky (a separate problem has developed where the Calibration isn't working correctly on Development Computer. Reexamining the corde showed that whilst whilst a fix had been made, it later regressed before finalising 3.27.2. The issue was fixed in AstroAllSky 3.27.3, and the new version released to the AllSly/Weather Computer.

• Session (monitor).dat file was again short and effectively stopped recording early in the session (20:06).  As per the previous S1393 session the 'Observatory (monitor).dat file was very short having unexpectedly quit at around 20:06.  Log file shows that the 'EnvMonitor' monitor stopped at 20:06:51 during 'InitiatingStage2', which is exactly the same point as during the previous S1393 session. This suggests either a stop command is issue from ObsManager or the EnvMonitor is closing in response to the CCDCamera being connected at this time.  Examining code show that the original code line StartTempMonitor(), but after the change in name from 'TempMonitor' to 'EnvMonitor' after creation of 'EnvMonitor class inheriting from TWorkerBase, the code line should have become the equivalent line  'EnvMonitor.Start()',  but somehow had become incorrectly entered/changed to 'EnvMonitor.Stop()'. Fixed in AstroMain 3.80.16, and session restarted to use it.

• Desktop background on AllSky/Weather Computer went black & Windows Task Bar became lost. During the course of the session it was necessary to stop and restart AstroAllSky program using a new version (that fixed the 'No Stars displaying on Annotated Image' issue), it was noticed the the desktop bakground was all black.  An attempt to correct this by restarting Explorer via ExplorerPatcher howeever thsi seemed to hang or not work and after tryingto Kill/restart Windows it ended with TaskBar being lost and couldn't be restarted. AstroLaunch appeared frzoen  As it was it the middle of session, workarounds had to be used to get AstroAllSky to run and to resolve an issue with Oculus Driver that involved resetting the USB Port to the camera (using UCH Switch via AstroWeather).An attempt to do this using Pegasus Astro Unity failed as its screen was all black (likely relies on Windows / .NET in some way for this) . Eventually resolved the following day by restarting the computer.

• Unable to connect to Oculus AllSky Camera.   During the course of the session it was necessary to stop and restart AstroAllSky program using a new version (that fixed the 'No Stars displaying on Annotated Image' issue).  As part of earlier efforts to resolve problem it seems the camera USB connection was left in a stalled state.  And both AstroAllSky and CCDSoft couldn't make a connection to the camera.  This was resolved in-session by resetting the USB Port to the Camera using Pegasus USB Control Hub (UCH) via ASCOM Switch from AstroWeather.  After this the camera was connected to ok and it functioned for the remainder of the night.

Small Defects

• A red Dome Alert and a yellow Shutter Alert made at around the same time are not consistent (03:24). At 03:24:33 a Red 'Dome Alert' was raised with the message  "Shutter Data isn't being refreshed" and 5s later, at 03:24:38, a yellow "Shutter Data' alert was raised with the message "Pulsar Shutter appears to be asleep (last fresh data was at 03:04:31) ". Both alerts relate to the same 'pause' in Pulsar Shutter Data refreshes but are given alert of different severity / different colour. This is inconsistent and should be fixed in someway. 20s after these red/yellow alerts a green all-clear was reported at 03:24:58 with the message "Pulsar Shutter has woken up (fresh data at 03:24:46, outage 20.5 min)".  It would seem that trying to access the data at these times caused Pulsar Shutter data to refresh again or its pure coincidence.  To be reviewed and fixed in AstroMain 3.80.17+.
