Session Aims & Highlights (2026-03-31)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. AstroMain 3.81. Check that refactoring of T.StartTime/ T.EndTimeSlot to use DateKind.UTC internally hasn't introduced any bugs or anomalous behaviour in AstroMain 3.81.

Highlights

• Targets. 18/x planned targets were completed with 1 target partially completed. 
• AstroMain 3.81. There were issues with new 3.81& 3.81.1 versions causing targets to be acquired 1 hour later than planned (3.81) or not at all (3.81.1). These were teething issues and the problems resolved in-session with version 3.81.2 which was successfully used during the last half of the session.
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session.

• Issues with new 3.81 version of AstroMain following refactoring (21:06 - 00:42) . Since the previous session (AstroMain 3.80.33) the Date kind of T.StartTime, T.EndTimeSlot etc has been moved over to use UTC internally, instead of legacy use of Local Time. There were however obmissions in the refactoring that caused 3.81 to have erronous behaviour that saw the first 3 targets to be skipped and the fourth target and following targets to be acquired, but one hour earlier than planned.   Session was stopped at xx:xx and a revised 3.81.1 version was installed in the Observatory, but this also had remaining issues that caused targets to fail during execution.   Issues finally resolved and fixed in versio 3.81.2 which was used for the last part of the session. So whilst the failures were unfortunate the process of testing the next version and resolving the issue in-session (rather than carrying over to the next) worked well. .

Small Defects

• A yellow 'Telescope Slew' alert with message "slew timed out after 2.5 mins"  was a false alert (02:03)  A yellow alert was raised at 02:03:37, with the message "Telescope slew has timed out after 2.5 minutes".   Previously there have been real cases where the Telescope Slewing property didn't return to false at the end of the telescope's phyical slew, and the slew monitoring correctly timed out after 2.5 minutes of waiting. However on this occassion the Slewing property returned to False at 02:01:27.49 (T+19.8) as witnessed by AstroMain Slew Path recording and by the (scope).log generated from the MeadeGeneric logs themselves.  This is evidentally a bug in the SlewMonitor that didn't exit the monitoring loop when both scope and dome had completed their slews, but continued looping until the timeout condition after 150s  (2.5 mins) .Although the SlewMonitor indicated that Dome.Slewing had become False (0 ) at T+ 10.1s

   the "(dome).log" indicated that Dome didn't finish slewing until 02:03:37 (T+150s)

  The SlewTable reported that Dome Slew was 10s,  0s for Scope Slew and 151s overall. The SlewMonitor clearly shows the Scope Slew finished after 19.8s which was validate by the (scope).log file. The Pulsar logs showing that the Slewing Flag does reset to non-slewing state at 02:03:37.8  which explains why the slew monitor timed out,  but doesn't explain why Slewing-False (0) was seemingly picked up and reported at 10.1s into the slew, unless it was a single rouge values introduced along the way.  Volatile message show the dome Rotating Anticlockwise (2) at 02:01:07, and continuing in this state (2) until 02:03:37when it changes to Not Rotating (0). It seems that it was trying to reach destination azimuth of 133.1 but for some reason got to Az 133.3 at 02:01:17 and didn't move any more.  The logs indicate that dome was returning Slewing = True until it was aborted after 150s, and it is likely that there was a data glitch in the reading at 10.1s which suggested Slewing = False. It is proposed that the monitor wait to see two readings with Slewing - False before concluding that Slew has finished.  Implemented in AstroMain 3.81.4

• The Session's SlewTable reported the Telescope slew to IC 4556 took 0s when it actually took 20s (21:01). Whilst there was an anomaly with the slew to Target (IC 4556) that some a yellow 'Telescope Slew' alert at 21:03 as the SlewMonitor loop had timed out after 150s (2.5 mins), which is seemingly associated with the Dome Slew element , the Telescope slew took 19.8s (before slewing turned False (0). which was confirmed by the (scope).log summary of the MeadeGeneric ASCOM Log. However the SlewTable reports that the telescope slew was 0s

  It is likely that the correct value of 20s was overwritten by 0s when the SlewTheSkyScope routine timed out after 150s. Fixed in AstroMain 3.81.3 - bug found and corrected.
