Session Aims & Highlights (2019-09-21)

Main aims

1. Centering Chart: Test out fixes to 'Centering Charts' (AstroMain 3.11.6)
2. Mixed Target - Image a selection of targets, but mainly Open Clusters, Variable Stars and Nearby Star Targets due to bright moonlit sky conditions
3. Software & Systems  - Check stability of software and presence of any side effects following ongoing enhancements to AstroMain and associated support programs.

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (AstroWeather 1.7.8) Cloudy for most of night with skies potentially clearing at 03:00,  low probability of any significant rain (As it turned out the evolving forecast through the late evening extended the cloud further and further through the night, and indeed it was cloudy for the the whole night, only clearing at around 06:30 after the sun has risen. A few spots of rain occurred at around 00:45 and 02:40)

Major Issues

• AstroPlan produced and executed an exceeding large number of generally very short plans for the night (11 in fact). Between the 01:18 and 01:53 the plans had as few as 1 target per plan (V Sge).  Each plan had to be separately generated, loaded and session reinitiated, leading to unnecessary extra session events, log messages, and reduced imaging time. It is suspected that target database is very depleted and there are few C3/P3 constraint objects above the horizon/above airmass limits for this particular LST time interval.  Need to increase depth and breadth of objects in the Targets database, especially those with C3/P3 constraints. (Targets DB).  Partly resolved 2019-09-22. (Targets DB). Airmass constraint for C1 and C2 targets relaxed to allow around 40 extra targets to be accessed. More fully resolved 2019-10-06 by fixing the issue that Regular Targets ('monitor') were being set to Completed which had the effect of deactivating them from following sessions. effectively Need to add more targets before next full moon.
  Resolved 2019-10-06  (Database & AstroMain). Still need ensure that targets database is well stocked with active targets.

• AstroPlan produced 3 plans during the night that were seemingly not uploaded to the job queue and used.  3 plans were produced at 23:00, 00:53 and 01:18 that weren't used and instead other plans produced at the same times were used. ie they were 'rejected' or otherwise passed over for some unknown reason. This is the first time this has been seen. Interestingly their names where found to be EXECUTED PLAN but without the Session number suffix.  They each contained 2-5 targets marked as 'Scheduled' (ie never executed).  This is the first time that this has been seen. It may have something to do with  problem of having very short plans (14 generated in total for the night) or to introduction of new features relating to creating Plan/Session Charts
  
  Examing the code it is clear that the 3 plans get passed over (and new plans made in each case) because their names are saved to the database with the description EXECUTED PLAN, rather than BASE PLAN (which is the norm).    It appears to have happened because SessionEvents.LoadResultEvents wasn't using a local variable for PlanType and sets the global variable PlanType to EXECUTED after ScheduleBuilder had set it to BEST and before the Plan was saved to the database
  Fixed 2019-09-22  (AstroPlan 1.10.6/ AstroMain 3.11.8).    (Changes made:   local variable is renamed PlanTypeX  and some delays are inserted in AstroMain between operations that could cause a conflict back in AstroPlan)
   
• AstroPlan's Composite Plan Plotter unable to display 14 plans produced during the night. This is far in excess of the number it has previously been tested with, and may point to an array size limit.   Checking code  showing that the CP, Composite Plan, array was hard coded to a size of 10.  This was a reasonable to use but it didn't allow for cases where there is some issue that generates multiple plans in particular situations.

• Plan names/versions on Composite Plan chart are can being overposting when the length of plans are very short.

• Composite Plan charts display an incorrect Session Number. Charts are showing session number S685 regardless of actual session number corresponding to the date of the plans being plotted. (S685 corresponds to 2018-08-26, which is used as a hard code live session test date on Development Computer)

• A framework Centering Chart was made at start of session and saved to the Session log folder but wasn't copied to the Live Folder.  Issue closed as problem no longer occuring and is considered to have been resolved

• Plan End for Active Plan shown at Schedule.NightEnd rather than at the end time of the last observation in the plan

• Latest Session webpage shows a formatting issue in contents after hidden elements are raised with ''block' feature. Problem only occurs with IPad Safari not on Windows Explorer 11.

• Two points on Right Hand (Center) graph of Centering Charts with anomalously large N errors.  Code is correctly plotting the available data, the two points both have the larger N errors that are indicated by the plot. They show up as being anomalous as poor conditions allowed only 1 out of 4 locate images to link, so there was no chance for recentering improvements to show. One issue uncovered is that one of the two data points didn't link on 1st locate frame and therefore doesn't appear on the 'slew' graph.  This requires a small fix.

Continuous Improvement

• Investigate how many 'stranded' C1 constraint targets there are. These are targets which have a 1.5 airmass limit (C1) limit but have declinations which are too low to ever archieve this.  Airmass of <1.5 (with 1 hour tolerance around LST) requires a Declination  > 10 at my site.  Using Targets List form and using the SQL qualifying query  "ConstraintID = "C1" AND Dec2000<10" reveals 56 targets which are stranded and can't be scheduled.  Relaxing the C1 airmass limit to 2.5 requires a Declination of > -8.    This would still leave 22 targets stranded.   In addition there are 37 targets that are stranded by the C2 contraint with airmass limit of 3.0.  Probably need to have a constraint that was airmass<x or  LST within +/-y hour of target RA, in order to get target as high as possible. For the time being the C1 airmass limit will be reduced to 2.5, the C2 airmass limit relaxed to 3.5  and a CI item added for incorporating hour angle constraints

• When extending the session with a new plan, it is appropriate to have a shorter initiating/equilbration process.
  This is so that Dome / Telescope / PHD2 etc don't have to be reconnected or at least affirmative messages are hidden.
  This was implemented by using a new Session State 'Continuing'

• Modify Plan Saver so that the EndTime of the last planned target is saved as the Plan's EndTime
  >> Review system implications of this change.   (Nov 2020 - need to check if this has since been resolved).
   
• Session's slew/centering performance chart to be renamed as CenteringChart.yyyyMMdd.png
  (instead of yyyy-MM-dd S00xxx CenteringChart.png). This is to simplify housekeeping/website records.

• Extend target constraints to include option of an hour angle constraint (to allow inclusion of targets when they are at their highest in the sky)
