Session Aims & Highlights (2021-01-22)

Main aims

1. Software. Test features and fixes added in AstroMain 3.35
2. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets and deep sky targets as allowed by conditions.

Highlights

• Autostart.  Autostart worked perfectly , automated opening of the observatory and start of session at 01:06 when skies were detected to have cleared.  Apart from initiating AutoStart at 23:56 the whole session ran in an entirely automated unattended mode.
• Targets.  x Targets successfully acquired
• Centering.  Targets centering was very good
• Autoguiding.  Autoguiding performance was good

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (API data from darksky.net) Pre-Session Weather forecast showed overcast conditions (cloud cover 100%) with possibility of light rain showers in first part of night, giving way to clear stars from 02:00 onwards (cloud cover 25-39%) with very low probability of light showers. Temperatures 5°C falling to 3°C by dawn.. Moderate Wind (13-16 mph) Observatory was set in AutoStart mode, so that session would begin would automatically commence when sky conditions became suitable for observing.   In the event skies were overcast until 01:00 (with rain at 00:45) and then remained clear until dawn except for a passing cloud with spots of rain at 02:55 Temperature of 4°C at 01:00 fell to 1°C by dawn. Winds light to moderate.

• Circle isn't drawn around WDS GRB 34 on target's JPG pictures.  RetrieveTarget () was changed in AstroMain 3.35 to set PositionErrorRadius = 0.5 for selected ProjectID's including ProgramID = 11 (' Nearby Stars').   Bug fixed in AstroMain 3.35.1 (line intended to set PositionErrorRadius = 0.5 had been accidenttly left out !)

• txtNextRain field is still being shown with Salmon (red) background when probability of rain is very small.   Modification in AstroMain 3.35 hasn't worked.  Bug Fixed in AstroMain 3.35.1 (code modified to use correct variable (NextRain instead of NextRainHours),

• Pasting Reduced Folder Analysis result into session Fits_Summary, added an Image Picture instead of expected text. Feature added in AstroMain 3.35 so that the results of reduced folder analysis ( '358/386 images successfully linked (92.7%)' ) would be copied to clipboard in order to reduce number of steps performed by the user.  However upon pasting the clipboard contents to .xls the  image picture from the last analysed image was copied instead.   So either the new code line (Clipboard.SetText (string) ) isn't been executed or otherwise fails.  or it requires a preceeding delay or the use of a preceeding Clipboard.Clear.  Clipboard contents can be queried Clipboard.ContainsImage, Clipboard.ContainsText. as a check ? .

• Guide Reference JPG Pictures aren't being shown on Current Session web page. The Guide reference pictures are being created in JPGS and JPGS_sm folders ok, so it is presumed that the pictures aren't getting transferred to live folder as they should. Examining the last 10 ImageFrames in the Live folder shows GCVS AM Her's Loc2 image in the ImageFrame03 position, with Guide Frame in ImageFrame05 position, and Focus Frame in ImageFrame06 position with Main Images in positions ImageFrame07 - 10 and ImageFrame01 to 02.  With this sequence ImageFrame04 position should contain Guide Reference image but instead it contains an older SS Her Image.   So the Guide Reference picture is being created ok and the ImageFrameNo is being incremented ok, but the associated file copy to Live Folder is either not happening or is failing. SaveGuideImageToJpg() calls ConvertFitsToJpg() with SaveType=5. and there are no call differences between Guide Reference and the Guide Frame and nor any material differences between the 2 Jpg's produced.  There is nothing to explain why the copy would inherently fail
  Copy wouldn't occur if  bWriteDest2Image hadn't been set to true, but this is unlikely from code or something else, like a second call to routine,   caused bWriteDest2Image to be set to false,  or the "ConvertFitsToJpg.bat" was overwritten before it executed.   This seems the likely explaination. Fixed attempt by moving the min 5s delay between calls to Bat execution to be moved before the code that writes to the batch file.   This issue happens because calls to SaveGuideImageToJpg are to Guide Reference and Guide Frame are made quite quickly after each other. A second fix has been made to add a delay before calling SaveGuideImageToJpg with the the GuideFrame.

• Slew/Centering chart, showed two points for SN 201xn target on 'Pointing Error after slew' plot. One point for slew (Loc1, Error 23.1') and one point for first centering jog (Loc2, Error 19.8').  The graph should only plot the first point derived from a successful link (Loc1 in this case). Points are added by calls to CChart.AddSlewPoint() routine. There is only one place (in OB.CenterTarget routine) that these calls are made from.  Calls are conditional on bSlewPointRecorded = False,  so if the variable isn't set to true after first locate from analysis (Loc1), the call will be made after the second locate frame.   Code shows that bSlewPointRecorded = True is only set when PointingError_mins < 20.   As Pointing Error was 23.1' after first locate analysis the behaviour (2 points plotted) can be explained.  Investigated showed a bug in code whereby when Pointing Error > 20 then SlewAdjustments where still including the 'bad slew'.  Code modified to fix this bug and to fix the issue that 2 points where being shown.

• A 6s delay is being added before calling each and every call to Batch File to Convert FitsToJpg .  Bug fixed (nSecs had been accidently defined as type boolean, instead of type double).  This bug may have also contributed to issue that GuideReference file wasn't getting copied to Live Folder.

• Query: Target 2 (SN 2021xn) had slew/jog issues. Pointing Error after slew 23.1' (Loc1). Pointing Error after first centering jog 19.8' (Loc 2),   Pointing occur after final center operations (0.6', Loc 4). No clear reason,  it seems to be a rogue jog that wasn't picked up and self-corrected.
  Given this isn't common and was corrected after the 3rd Locate frame the issue is closed.

• Query: Target 3 (GCVS DY Per) had jog issues.  Pointing Error after slew & centering operations were 1.77' (Loc1) , 1.61' (Loc2), 1.40' (Loc3), 3.57'  (Loc4) . Also Guide Frames appear devoid of stars (TS80 occluded by roof ?). Target was positioned very close to Zenith.  No clear reason,  it might be a particular issue being able to make effective jogs when pointing at zenith.  Given this isn't common the issue is closed for timing being.
  Closed 2021-01-25 (Session)  but monitor for future cases.
   
• JPG Pictures aren't being created for the Focus AutoPick the Frame for Near Zenith Focus Field.   Problem repeated in following session at well (S854).
  Resolved S855 (AstroMain 3.35.2) 
   
• 5 x 180s frames for Target SN_2021xn didn't achieve successful image link during Image Reduction/Analysis stage.  Problem has been seen before if the image contains 'too many' stars.  Locate frames link ok.   Increasing Detection Threshold can reduce the number of star inventory objects and allow the image to match. Need to work out a way of automating the use of a different Source Extraction parameters (this is not suitable in cases where one is trying to get data on a faint object, as it is less likely to appear in the Image's Star Inventory). Fix attempted in AstroMain 3.45.2 by autoadjusting Sextractor's detect threshold to 60 (for >400 stars), or to 30 (for > 250-400 stars), instead of nornally used threshold value of 8 , works for some targets (eg AT 2021zkf in session S928, 2021-10-25) but not for DU 1 (S912).  Fix worked for SN 2021xn (S853) 4  of 5 frames linked with GSC (but not UCA/USNO) and the 5th linked with ASTAP , so 100% now link.

• Guide Frames for Target 3 (GCVS DY Per) were devoid of stars / guiding failed.  Guide Ref Frame and first guide frame appear devoid of stars. Guiding Chart shows loss/absence of guide star.  Target was positioned very close to Zenith. (alt 98.8d) and it would seem that the TS80 scope's view of the sky was occluded by the roof.  Maybe AstroPlan should invalidate targets with such high altitude, in order to obtain a place target at a slightly better time?. Maybe the Guide Reference frame should be analysed and guiding cancelled if there are no reliable stars.  Underlying issueesolved in AstroPlan 1.29.15 (2022-04-24) by not allowing targets to be entered into the observing plan at times were the target altitude is > 84°.

Continuous Improvement

• Modify name of JPG pictures to "0001.853001.TargetName.Loc1.jpg" or similar.  Modify name format from the interim format used in AstroMaim 3.35 which was like 0001.853001_Loc01.TargetName.jpg or similar

• Query: Can Object Size be reliably acquired from TheSky information lookup ?
  By testing it was found to be relatively easy to access Object Size and Orientation (Position Angle) established e.g.
  NGC 522 (Size: 2.8 x 0.5, Position angle: 32°00')
    skObjInfoProp_MAJ_AXIS_MINS (60) gives 2.8
    skObjInfoProp_MIN_AXIS_MINS (61) gives 0.5
    skObjInfoProp_PA (64) give 32
  After establishing this a new function GetObjectSize() was added to AstroPlan 1.20.2 and AstroMain 3.35.2.

• Use new T.TargetDisplayName variable more widely.  Use it for txtCurrentObject and on ObsViewer. Can be solved by setting szTargetName to T.TargetDisplayName , but still reviewing the wider implication of making this assignment.
