Fig 1.  New Difference Chart showing 'Clair-roe' differences for X, Y, Z on a single chart (AstroMag 1.4.23, 2025-06-04)

The calculated average difference error (e.g. 34.8, 104,3, 113.4 in this example) will be used as the Objective Function result for a new GA tool (to be developed) for understanding and setting best parameters used for temperature correction.

Geomagnetic Station -  GA Tool (2025-06-06 to 2025-06-20)

A Geomagnetic Monitoring Station has been added to the Observatory in Spring 2025 for monitoring changes in the earth's magnetic field and to supplement and build upon the Observatory's existing Aurora monitoring that uses a Black/White AllSky Camera (2014+) and a new NorthCam Colour Camera (2024+)

The following notes describes AstroMag's GA Tool for deriving the best Temperature Correction parameters

The Geomagnetic Station remains Temperature Sensitive even though magnetometer are buried in an assembly 0.8 to 1.2m below ground surface, where daily temperature variations measured by co-located Temperature Sensor Probe are typically not more than 0.2°C.

The temperature effects are subtle and complex.  Whilst magnetometers are very sensitive to temperature the indications are that effects seem to be mostly  related to the large diurnal temperature changes in the Observatory where the SAM III box is located, rather than small daily temperature changes at the level of the magnetometers.

AstroMag version 1.4.22 had the capability to correct readings using either Outdoor or Observatory Temperature and using Temperature Coefficients separately set for X, Y & Z Axis.  Best parameter values were determined by try & error and set by hand .

AstroMag version 1.5 has additional capability to further correct for the small variations in subsurface temperatues, together with use of a GA tool that looks at 5 day period of data and finds the best set of parameters that minimise errors with respect to the most relevant comparison station.

Best parameter settings were manually transferred to AstroMag settings on the Observatory Computer, and Sam Monitor restarted.  Initially the Y and Z graph lines couldn't be seen, but this was resolved by copying 'Proposed Offsets' to 'Live Offsets' using the 'Copy to Offsets' button and then restarting the Sam Monitor.  The use of B Temperature Coefficients for Y & Z axes bulk shifts the calculated temperature reading requiring different offsets to be used.

3) 2025-06-09  - AstroMag GA Tool,  results looking at 5 days of data from 2025-06:04 12:00 to 2025-06-09 12:00

GA Tool was run using the previous day's best case as the base.

Update 2025-06-20

- Match Quality (39.6) for 5 day period (2025-06-15 09:00 to 2025-06-20 09:00)
- Uses the Temp Correction settings that were determined on 2025-06-09 (based on data from 2025-06:04 12:00 to 2025-06-09 12:00)
- X quality (6.6) and Z quality (9.8) is acceptable, but the Y quality (23.3) is not - the Y readings show a distinct upwards drift

4) 2025-06-20  - AstroMag GA Tool,  results looking at 5 days of data from 2025-06-15 10:00 to 2025-06-20 10:00

GA Tool was run with X and Z Temperature Coefficients Locked Down and nPop=300, nGen=30

4a) Match Quality (79.9) with No Temperature Correction

4b) Match Quality (35.7) with Base Temperature Correction  (parameters from 2025-06-09

Image

4s)  A second run was made with X & Y coefficients locked down which reduced Z err from 9.7 to 6.5 and reduced total fitness score down to 20.5

- Match Quality (20.5) with Best Temperature Correction (from GA Tool, nPop=30, nGen=30)
- (using ObsTemp & A coefficients of -7.4,-10.0,-5.8, delay 75 mins + B Coefficients +12.6, -17.9, +20.6, delay 700 mins)
- Z error reduced from 9.7 to 6.5, and its trend line is now flat.
