Session Aims & Highlights (2025-11-25)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) - Acquire images of comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS), attempt to image the recently annouched split in comet, and new objects C/2025 K1-B & C/2025 K1-C
3. 3I/ATLAS - Acquire images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS (alias C/2025 N1 (ATLAS)
4. AstroMain - Check fixes added to AstroMain 3.78.9 for fixing issue with failed telescope slews and Dome Reconnection after a Dome Restart.

Highlights

• Targets. 29/43 planned targets were completed, with a further 3 targets partially completed.  Other plans targets failed due cloud, session suspension or were displaced due to the acquistion ToO (3I/ATLAS).
• C/2025 K1 (ATLAS). Unable to acquire images of C/2025 K1 (ATLAS), as target has moved northwards beyond the Telescope's Declination Hard Limit.
• 3I/ATLAS. Images of 3I/ATLAS were successfully acquired in the pre-dawn hours as a manually supervised ToO target.
• CCD Camera.   There were no isues with the CCD Camera
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session

• Telescope Slew to Target 33/44 timed out after 2.5 minutes and was aborted (02:39). A yellow 'Telescope Alert' alert was raised at 02:39:36 during slew to Target 33/44 AT2024jfs) with the message Telescope Slew Timed out after 2.5 minutes". The slew as automatically and successfully aborted. Although the slew left the telescope at around 30' away from the target, centering operations were successful and images were acquired as plan. Examining the Slew Path recorded by AstroMain's Slew Monitor showed that the telescope essenitally arrived at the target after just 13-15s, allowing for a typical settle time of 5s, the slew should have been completed by around 20s, but for some reason the Telescope continued to report Slewing= 1 (True). Examining the MeadeGeneric logs showed that the Telescope was indeed returning Slewing=True right up to the moment that telescope was aborted. It would seem the issue was caused by some glitch in the Telescope driver or more likely in the LX200 Telescope Firmware. Issue closed after review 2025-11-26. A number of potential improvements are suggested, such as being able to ascertain that the slew had basically reached the target and had exceeded a typical settle time, allowing the slew process to be aborted at an earlier point (say at  around 60s) rather than wait for a full 2.5 minutes before timing out. These have been put into a separate Continuous Improvement ticker.

Small Defects

• The table showing 3 focus measurements after Foc2 AutoFocusing has incorrect field width for Max Pixel value. When performing AutoFocus for Foc2, and after reporting the Focus Profile, 3 further measurements are made at best focus position. The width of the Max pixel value is narrower than used for the Column Header ('Max).  Investigation show the issue was actually due to an extra 'Max' column header and the data columns widths were perfectly fine. Fixed in AstroMain 3.78.12.

• The detailed JPG picture for Target IC167 is abnomally sized, lacks top/bottom annotation and isn't correctly zoomed in (21:11).  Realtime JPG picture shown for Target 16/43 (IC 167) are shown in Fig 2. Whilst the left hand image is the standard full frame view and is normal, the 'Detail' image on the right is anomalous. It is meant to show an annotated view that is zoomed in on the target (IC 167) and cropped to the same picture size (as left hand picture) or if IC 167's picture coordinates are unknown it should be zoomed in on the centre of the frame.  In this case the picture is zoomed into the bottom right hand part of the full frame, is unlabelled and is taller than expected. Both of the two locate frames were imag linked ok. Issue probably related to the fact that main frames were acquired as half frame / 2x2 images.   Realtime JPG pictures are produced from FITS images taken during live operations, and is developed/tested principally with 3x3 binned images, and whilst it has likely been tested on 2x2 binned frames, it has had little testing on images that are half frame or quarter frame. FITS images should be replayed in AstroMain AdHoc Imaging using TargetID 3698 and substituted Frames #1378099 to 1378107, and debugging used to identify and fix the bug.
