Session Aims & Highlights (2025-11-27)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. 3I/ATLAS - Acquire images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS (alias C/2025 N1 (ATLAS)
3. AstroMain - Check fixes added to AstroMain 3.78.9 for fixing issue with failed telescope slews and Dome Reconnection after a Dome Restart.

Highlights

• Targets. 22/43 planned targets were completed, with a further 8 targets partially completed.  In addition 3 ToO targets were completed.  Some planned targets failed due to high wind/session suspension and some targets were displaced / cancelled by ToO Targets. Some targets were affected by telescope wind shake and might even be rejected later.
• 3I/ATLAS. Images of 3I/ATALS were acquired in the pre-dawn hours as a manually entered ToO target. They unfortunately rather wind-effected
• Wind Storm.   The Observatory system coped well with the strong winds. Targets were automatically selected in directions that were out of the wind direction. The observatory  operated for much of the night, though wind threshold was overriden and elevated by user
• Power Cut.   There were a series of powercuts during the session (likely storm related), but the Observatory / UPS System / procedures coped with the power outages pretty well. There were a number of reporting defects or anomalies that need to investigated and fixed where necessary.
• CCD Camera.   There were no isues with the CCD Camera
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session

• iSpy grab folder contained 21000 files, and is being probably cleared. NorthCam Imaging seemed to have slower down, one reason could be the excessive number of files in the grab folder these  target the 'messages' field still show ToO submission details from a different target.  Files were manually deleted as a workaround. When beginning a new imaging run the grab folder should be purged. Implemented in AstroNorthCam 1.7.3.

• AstroObsCam is crashing within 10 minutes of starting.  This seems to be a new issue.  Issue seemed to resolved itself, It may have something to do with starting AstroObsCam during live session when the ObsCam is turned-off via Switch and is then turned on my the user to access 'HD USB Camera' and Connect the Camera, with program crash happening when ObsCam is next toggled by the service that listens to AstroMain flags/requests.

• The iSpy64 program might have crashed when Power Cut occured (23:40).  iSpy64 might have crashed during power cut, however it it not certain if this was the case -  ISpy64 application might alternative been closed by the user, it hard to tell because VNC connection went down at the time of the power cut. Ig application had crashed was it because power had been cut off to the Tapo North View Camera  ?  Propose to check whether the Tapo Camera's AC/Adapter is power directly from Mains Supply or is powered via the AllSky Computing Bay's UPS System.  The proposed Configuration for the AllSky/Weather Computing Bay (2024-12-05) indicates that the the Tapo Camera's AC/ Adapter should be plugged into the Small Power Strip which is itsel plugged into one of power sockets on the UPS Box which is support by Battery Backup. See notes/diagram. A trip to Observatory is needed in order to verfiy that this is actually the case. If so, it can be ruled out that the Tapo Camera switched off during the power cut.  Closed after review 2025-12-04, on basis that there isn't enough data to understand precisely what happened during the powercut (during S1379 session).  Observatory was finally checked on 2025-12-09 and it was found the Tapo Camera's AC Adaptive was plugged into a socket that isn't backed up UPS Battery, which why iSpy64 program had issue when power cut occurred.  The AC/Adapter was plugged into the Small Power Strip that is supported by battery backup to prevent a similar issue in future.

• AstroNorthCam is producing ' Could not find file' exceptions .  Code was added to AstroNorthCam 1.7.3, to call ClearGrabFolder() at the start of each image cycle., but this lead to exception messages appearing like
  "Exception Moving : NorthCam.20251128.085913.00869153.jpg" &
"- Could not find file 'C:\Data\AllSky Imaging\TapoCam\Work\video\FABFG\grabs\NorthCam.20251128.085913.00869153.jpg'.
This is due to the GrabFileWatcher flagging up the presence of a new picture frame in the grab folder, but the file then being deleted before the Imaging Loop in MainRun() can use the file and move it into a work folder.   Fixed in AstroNorthCam 1.7.4, the ClearGrabFolder() routine now only deletes jpg frames that are older than 10s, and there stops the exception messages and ensures that all available frames from our image interval (typically 15s) are utilised, and thus maximising final image S/N during night time imaging.

Small Defects

• AstroObsCam isn't using the 'HD USB Camera' by default (it uses 'USB Camera'). After starting the AstroObsCam program and staring Services, it is natural to then click the 'Connect Camera' button, but this fails as the program tries to use the computer's web cam (USB Camera) rather than the Observatory Web Cam (HD USB Camera). The issue is worked around by changing the camera to 'HD USB Camera' in the 'Capture Devices' combobox and try Connect Camera again, but ideally the program always uses HD USB Camera by default.  This occured during a Live Observatory Session and is was eventually realised that this was occuring during period when the ObsCam  had been switched off during target image (to avoid IR lights from the web cam from affecting the CCD Images) and meant that "HD USB Camera" was temporarily removed from the Capture Devices List. . Issue is understood and explained. Issue closed after review 2025-11-28

• After running 'Copy Files from Observatory' AstroMove removed the green progress flags and file counts (post-session). After initialting 'Copy Files from Observatory' process to copy session files across to the Development Computer, user focus turned to another application. When user went back to AstroMove, the files had successfully as indicated by report lines in the messsage field area, but there was immediate indication of completed job that would have come from having green progress flags and file counts, instead of greyed-out progress boxes and 0/0" file counts.  The issu e is caused by a call to ResetFromObservatoryTab() from the AutoRefresh() loop. Fixed in AstroMove 1.17.1.

• NorthCam Star Count exceeded the 0-100 range on NightSummary Plot for much of the night. Due to particularly clear skies , NorthCam Star count was frequently higher than 120 and sometimes reaching values of 140+ The range needs to be modified from 0-100 to 0-150, this is achieved by changing NorthCamStarsInterval from 20 to 30 and change the equation using to calculate 'NorthCamStarsScale'. Fixed/implemented in AstroAllSky 3.26.2.

• CloudSensor Offtime was incorrectly reported (23:34). Following directly after the night's 1st power cut (from 23:34:23 to 23:34:47), the CloudSensor was reported by AstroMain to have switched-on at 23:34:48  with "offtime > 17,749,968 h". This is likely the hours since vcNullDate , and should not have been reported with this number. Fixed in AstroMain 3.78.11 through modification in Zigbee.HandleLightChange() routine.

• Target 24/45 was allowed to 'start' whilst Outage Management was active. Following a power cut from 23:34 to 23:43, and the ObsManager entered Outage Management stage 6 (Recovery), and proceeded to bring on line Telescope and SBIG camera etc.  During the recovery period Target 23/45 was closed out and associately report lines were given, this was followed by starting lines for Target 24/25 (AT2025aefi) until it reached a hold point  "Waiting on outage recovery".  The Job Queue should have been held back the commencement of the Target until Outage Management stage 6 had completed.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.78.11

• UPS Power Offtime was reported as Unknown when it should have been known. (23:34)  Associated with the night's 1st power cut (from 23:34:23 to 23:34:47), the UPS System wasn't reported to have gone over to Battery.  And when the power was restored, the Outage time was reported as "Unknown". Eaton UPS Alarms List (see Fig 1) clearly shows a message "The system is powered by the UPS Battery" at 23:34:27, with the return to power at 11:34:47.  Hence there was data for AstroMain to report that the start of Mains Power outage and to report the Outage as being of 20s when the power returned. The alarm message "Shutdown in 50 min 10s" also at 23:34:27 may may interferred with AstroMain's abilty to see immediately prior alarm "The system is powered by the UPS Battery" at 23:34:27.  This is explained by examinaton of the code.  A loop in the UPS.RunUpsMonitor(), which operates on a  every 0.5s cycle, fetches the Latest UPS alarm record using a call to GetLatestUpsRecord() function to get the latest record in Eaton Companion's  'euc.log'  file, and then handles the record ('UpsMessage') if it is different from the previous record ('LastUpsMessage'). Issue is that since the last record was handled, it is possible that 2 (or more) alarms could be added to the euc.log file and and if so the only the first one of these would be seen by the GetLatestUpsRecord() function which the most recent added one (ie the first of the two records added since last record was handled won't be raised up).  The UPS.RunUpsMonitor() needs to be modified to find the the next record since that last one was handled. GetLatestUpsRecord() function needs to be told to either fetch the very latest record, or the fetch the next record after the nth record, with the RunUpsMonitor() routine keeping note of which record it has handled.  Because records are written with the most recent first, we need to count all the records in the file first before we can extract the specific record needed.  New GetLatestUpsRecord(UpsRecordNo) function created with help of CoPilot.  The new routine utilitises Import Newtonsoft.Json.Linq (added to project from NuGet Manager Package /Package Manager Import) and the Newtonsoft.Json.dll needs to be copied from the project's bin folder into each program folders where AstroMain is run from.

• Report line "Waiting on outage recovery..." wasn't indented (23:44). The following report line

• Somewhat contradictory 'Aux Light' messages (23:43).  Just after power was restored at 23:43 and after Telescope Power was restarted., there was an Aux Light Check that reported "Aux Light has been on for 10 mins and will be switched off"., and there was message that confirmed that the Aux Light would be turned off, which was followed by a message from Zigbee Monitor reporting "Aux Light has switched off (23:43:29, on time > 4 sec)".  The message "on for 10 mins" and "on time >4s" are somewhat contradictory.
