Observatory Computer - Upgrade to Windows 11

Introduction

The Observatory Computer (an ASUS ExpertBook P2451FA, i7-10510U,  8GB RAM, 512GB, 14 Inch, Windows 10) has been operating since Dec 2021, when it was purchased and setup to replace an earlier computer (see Observatory Computer Replacement (2021-12-06)).  A Windows 10 reinstall / rebuild had to be performed in Jun 2021 (see Observatory Computer - Windows 10 Reinstall & Rebuild (2022-06-21)) to recover boot acccess.

The computer is still running Windows 10 in Oct 2025, but this is no longer supported by Microsoft as of 2025-10-14. It is planned to upgrade the computer to Windows 11 to maintain security protection etc.  A PC Health Check initially indicated that the computer didn't meet Windows 11 requirements as TPM 2.0 was not availble/not enabled, however this was recently resolved by upgrading the computer's ASUS BIOS to the latest version (see Upgrading BIOS from v303 to v318 to enable TPM 2,0 & Meet Windows 11 requirements (2025-08-12 / 2025-06-26) )

The upgrade to Windows 11 will be performed using Windows Update, and as an in-place upgrade:
- data files in C/Data folder and applications/data files in C:/More Programs should be preserved.
- applications and windows settings should be preserved provided that the  "keep personal files and apps" option is chosen during the in-place upgrade process.
- as always recommended to back up your data before starting the upgrade to be safe. 
- programs, settings and communications with Observatory Computer, Remote Computers &Observatory Website will need thorough checking post-upgrade.

Windows 11 is used on the current Development/Analysis Computer since Feb 2023 (see New Development Computer, 2023) where ExplorerPatcher is used to give a traditional styled task bar & start menu position, and will need to be installed on the AllSky/Weather Computer after the Windows upgrade. Observatory Software has been confirmed to run ok on Development Computer .

The whole process should be done within a day if there are no issues, but if there are issues then 3-4 days of work may be needed to reinstall software & drivers, and perform more extensive testing.  Any lessons from prior upgrade of AllSky/Weather to Windows 11 will be incorporated into the upgrade of the Obsrevatory Computer.

Upgrade
Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 was successfully made on 2025-10-29, with no issues, taking some 3 hours..
- download started at 12:29 (ended at 12:30)
- installing began at 13:30
- restart begun at 14:50
- ready for user login at 15:20

After the upgrade two operations were conducted to set up the computer ready for testing and use.

he usual 'Missing' CCDSoft dll files were copied into 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System' from a pre-prepared restoration folder.

Issues

Follow-Up : 2025-11-01
Reviewing System.Information on 2025-11-01 shows that the WIndows 11 version that was installed on the Observatory Computer on 2025-10-29 was 10.0.26200.  This is confirmed as being Windows 11 25H2 - which is the very latest version. 

In comparison the AllSky/Weather computer only installed the older Windows 11 23H2 version when it was updated to Windows 11 only the the day before (2025-10-28).
